    Guest Interview Begins: 31:52
Episode 504. This episode is a rock n roll geeks dream! We are joined by author David Leaf who discusses his 1970s authorized KISS biography that was written and then shelved. Only to reappear decades later as part of the KISS: Behind the Mask - The Official Authorized Biography. Why was his original book shelved and how it end up in Behind The Mask? Then the discussion turns to Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys… The Beatles and Paul McCartney… Charles Manson as we discuss David’s new book, God Only Knows: The Story of Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys and the California Myth.

While everyone else is reviewing the new Creatures of the Night we are still waiting for our copies. One year after the KISSonline shipping fiasco with the Destroyer box set nothing has improved with the shipping of the Creatures of the Night box set. Over a week after release date Michael’s box set has been sitting somewhere in Southern California for three days. This is after the first shipping alert email was sent out on November 18th. His box set has been on a tour of the US… leaving MI for OH, then on to OK, then a stop over in NM and now Southern CA. NEVER purchase anything from KISSonline that you can purchase from Amazon. Box sets purchased from Amazon, for less money, arrived on release day.
Just another reason to ask… does KISS care any longer?

Possibly the best & most insightful guest that I've ever heard on your show. Kudos not just to Mr. Leaf, but to you guys allowing and encouraging him to branch off from Kiss and just share his experiences. Utterly enthralling.

3 Sides Of The Coin never ceases to amaze me with your guests. This episode was awesome. I'm 58 yrs young & the info on The Beach Boys, The Beatles & KISS from David was extremely interesting. I started out as an Aussie kid getting into The Beatles as we used to sing in 3rd grade at school with a single speaker, a song book in class & then I discovered my Father had the Revolver album. When I asked my Dad who his favorite music band was he said The Beach Boys & I liked them but didn't get into them until about 20 yrs ago. Bee Gees didn't really hit me until say just over 25 yrs ago. Never too young or old to appreciate music. Thanks for making my week, every time I watch 3 Sides Of The Coin. It never ceases to amaze me.

Pure gold!!! Many thanks, what a christmas present, so much about Briam Wilson & Beach boys saga, how being a family was also their tragedy. Gelousy, greed, hate between brothers and cousins is always way more violent and sad than between friends. Thank you boys, from Barcelona.

I'm with Mark, that solo Peter Criss interview is what intrigued me the most. I had not realized none existed while he was in KISS (unless you count 16 Magazine, when he came to their offices with Lydia, and who knows how much of that was legit). But it was great to hear how polite and accommodating KISS was back then. The Beatles and Beach Boys talk was also interesting. Paul McCartney is on record citing God Only Knows as his favorite song (then again, I've also seen him cite A Whiter Shade of Pale). But one can clearly hear the Brian Wilson influence on Here, There & Everywhere...maybe my personal fave. Great episode, guys!

Fabulous guest, I'm not a fan of the Beach Boys in fact I don't like their music at all, but he made me want to read his book. He shares his passion and knowledge. Kudos to Tommy who's a fan of the BB and came up with great questions.

I was at the Des Moines KISS concert in 1979 and skipped seeing the Pope with my catholic family (He was in Des Moines that day). It was at Veterans Memorial Auditorium (terrible sound). We now have Wells Fargo Arena. Cool that Dave was there interviewing them that day. I heard they were acreoss the street at the Holiday Inn but i was 13 and my older sister brought me.

Historical sidenote: When I started reading "Behind the Mask", I wondered why the first chapter about the individual band members sounded so familiar. It was said that this had never been read before. But, no. In 1981, a German teenie magazine named "Pop/Rocky" ran a series with those band member interviews. Of course I first read it in German translation, so it took me a while to figure it out. But that was definetly word for word the same text.

That really intrigued me how the book idea fizzled out in 1979 and it was not revisited.
The author was dreaming high, but if it had been released in 1980, would the book have been a fiasco? Perhaps a big yes.

I thought this guest was absolutely incredible! No offense to KISS ( they are my number one band) but I was more intrigued by the other stories he was telling, especially the Dennis Wilson/ Charles Manson connection. I read the book' Helter Skelter' as a teenager one summer while visiting my Grandparents. It was on their bookshelf. I started reading it late one night before bed, which looking back on it now was probably not the smartest thing to do. I was both horrified and fascinated at the same time, and couldn't put the book down. I remember talking to my Mom about it. She said she remembered cooking dinner one evening while listening to the radio and heard about the murders on the news. It was a HUGE story. She said she was terrified. It scared everybody. She was pregnant with me at the time, as was the actress Sharon Tate with a baby boy. My Mom said she couldn't even begin to imagine the hell she went through.

Tell that guy at the bottom to please, for the love of god turn a light on (unless he looks like the elephant man). You guys have had to have mentioned this to him and this can’t be the first time someone has said that. You can barely see him let alone anything he may hold up. Very unprofessional. Especially when you look at the top two. While I’m asking. I’m definitely not trying to be a misogynist but does that woman you have on actually know anything about kiss? I have yet to hear her ask a question or make a comment about kiss. It’s more like 2 sides of the coin and one who doesn’t know anything about kiss and one who hates light.
