    I don’t even like (or dislike) KISS and I found this fascinating - such an in-depth study of a downward spiral, well put together, great clips and quotes and a studied, well spoken narrative. This is the stuff that makes TH-cam awesome

    I just loved the fact that Ace's solo album was a huge hit. But that's what happens when your other band mates 'control freaks' choke a key core member of Kiss. Gene & Paul's biggest mistakes was constantly choosing their own songs for final cut on Kiss songs. Ace often lifts up other classic rock songs. His version of Do Ya by ELO is amazing. The way Paul just ignores Ace's solo album to me says it all.

      I'm just being pedantic here, don't mind me - ELO was a spinoff band of The Move, who recorded Do Ya before re-recording it as ELO. Do Ya is actually a Move cover, Ace was a Move fan. Check em out!! 👍🏻

    Excellent work, Catboy. Another reminder that Ace's solo album was not only the best of the bunch by a mile, but still holds up to this day as a ferocious, blistering, hook-laden hard rock album that still sounds fresh and exciting 44 years later.

    • @kjnodwell
      @kjnodwell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Very true. I still listen to the album in its entirety every now and then on Spotify and it's still fresh and exciting. Had a debate a few weeks ago with a couple of Gene fans as to whose solo album was the best. Being Gene fans, of course they HATE Ace so they rated his as the WORST of the bunch. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I find most of Gene's LAUGHABLY bad. I mean..." When You Wish Upon A Star"...r u friggin kidding me lol

When Quiet Riot came out with Metal Health that's what opend the door for me but Motley Crue blew the hinges off! KISS was there always and I liked some stuff (I distinctly remember the creatures album cover) I really got back into KISS when REVENGE came out and was really looking forward to the next album then KISS UNPLUGGED happened and the rest is KISSTORY! Hearing you speak and flesh out all these details brings me back (as I’m sure it does for the majority of listeners) to being a kid when all this was happening with such a different perspective. I don’t know what it is about this band but they’re a guilty pleasure. They sure knew how to capitalize on their commercial success….and Paul and Gene are still doing it. Not to sound pretentious, but keeping my attention was only possible because of the great job you do. I love classic rock, so keep them coming. Be great if you could do one about Judas Priest.

    Very interesting video... thanks for making this. I was about 10 at that time. I had become a Kiss fan when my older sisters gave me their Alive album. My friends and I were big Kiss fans, but I do remember the increasing disappointment with their music around 1978+. My best friend and I bought the solo albums (he bought Ace's and I bought Gene's). We didn't really like them all that much and never bought Paul's or Peter's. I can also remember a friend was really unhappy with Double Platinum as it was just re-releases so I never bought that one. We were confused and embarrassed by the Kiss movie, we didn't mind Dynasty but were disappointed in Unmasked. Unmasked was the last Kiss album I ever bought and moved on to metal and British new wave in the early 80s. I still love Kiss's early stuff. Anyway, thanks for video... going to watch the rest now.
    Edit: people might find this amusing but four albums I distinctly remember owning and listening to a lot at this time was Kiss - Alive, Cheap Trick - Live at Budokan, Boney M - Nightflight to Venus, and Village People - Macho Man. LOL The 70s had such great music!

So, while people were listening, and seeing the video, I don’t recall too many people buying the album. But there was a definite buzz that KISS was “kiss again”. That’s partly why Lick it Up did so well. Obviously taking off the makeup was a big part of that, but the awareness of COTN being a great album helped set that up. If it weren’t for COTN I wouldn’t have noticed that KISS took off the makeup.

I had an older friend, who lived up the street, and he had their albums, and he got dressed up as Peter Criss and went and saw them. I'd never been so jealous before in my life! I did get to see them, years later, with Ace, the first time they did a last tour, so that was cool.

    I completed part one. Just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work on this, this was fascinating, informative, very well researched, and explains a lot of what went on in a direct way.
    Thoughts?
    Well, continuing on with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons OWNING their mistakes, and responsibility for what followed, I rant on.
    AND THAT'S WHERE THEY FELL. And the drug they're both in denial they're addicted to, MONEY, is what compelled them to take an image that could be seen as silly (if not for Gene trying to be evil incarnate), be SMART enough to turn that into PERSONAS, ICONS, EFFIGIES, symbolising different "earthly and interdimensional aspects", and BRANDING that to a degree that their merchandising alone was a cashcow that would not stop shitting. They made SO MUCH MONEY from merchandising. More than from their song publishing. Their songs were SECONDARY to that branding.
    And all of a sudden they wanted to be seen as serious musicians in clown makeup.
    Ace Frehley and Peter Criss have no such agendas. They know eggsacklee what they look like, how they're dressed. They have no illusions about it. And they are fine with it. But serious about it??? You must be joking. How can you be serious about this. I can't even stand up straight sometimes in 7 inch high heels on stage. I fall down ffs!!!! Serious? About this?? This is a gig, man. This is an act. But I LOVE MUSIC SO MUCH I'll do ANYTHING to play it, and have that be what I do THE REST OF MY LIFE. That's how much I love this guitar, these drums, this whole thing. That's who PETER CRISS and ACE FREHLEY ARE. They are not pretending to be anything else but themselves.
    Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley on the otherhand, want to be seen as ARTISTS. And they are fooling themselves thinking they are. You can be a musician or a painter, and not be an ARTIST. You can be creative as all hell, and still not do a damn thing that says it's ART.
    ART got born in the caves, when the hunters came back from surviving another day, and the spiritual leader of the tribe painted on the cave walls what those hunters encountered, so that EVERYONE could go on the hunt with them. EVERYONE. This is a SHARED EXPERIENCE. You women, you children, you elderly, you wounded, you cannot go with these men where they go. You have seen that some do not come back. I am taking you there on this cave wall, with this dirt, that charcoal, my spit, or the fat of the animal our hunters brought back with them, AND I AM TAKING YOU THERE SO YOU MAY HUNT WITH THEM. AND YOU WILL LEARN WHAT IT MEANS TO SURVIVE EVERY DAY. YOU WILL KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO BE HUMAN.
    THIS IS ART. THIS IS WHAT ART DOES. IT TAKES YOU THERE.
    Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have no clue what Art is. None. They know what success means. They know what POWER means. They know what MONEY gets. But they have NO CLUE what Art is. And they learned this from John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Art?? When your aim is to be as successful as possible, and have a swimming pool by the time you're 25, you have NO CLAIM TO BEING AN ARTIST. You are a businessman, with a tool to be used to build your palace. And whether you hang ART there on its walls, or go to your underground gallery on the weekends, YOUR CLAIMS to being an ARTIST are nil.
    Because you are not doing it to bring the EXPERIENCE to the tribe. You are only helping them ESCAPE the experience they're meant to be living. And you're doing it taking as much money out of their pockets as you can, because you're selling them dreams.
    Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
    THESE ARE ARTISTS. THESE ARE THE TALENT MAKING THE BUSINESSMAN, THE PSEUDO-CREATOR SOUND GOOD.
    These are the GENUINE PEOPLE. These are YOU. The REGULAR guy and gal.
    They are YOU. And YOU are THEM. As soon as a Gene Simmons or a Paul Stanley wants YOU to take THEM seriously, is when YOU are going to start laughing your ass off at THEM for even thinking they can be taken seriously.
    AND THAT'S WHO KILLED KISS'S RUN OF SUCCESS IN 1978. Not Ace. Not Peter. They were being REAL. You took them SERIOUSLY. And maybe Peter let you down a bit, but that dude was struggling being a member of KISS, and he got lost in who the hell he was anymore. Success and Fame are not for human beings. We're not made for it. And it gets to some of them who just have a little more contact with their soul. If the soul exists. But I think it definitely does. And Peter Criss sings with SOUL. That man could be Motown if he wanted to be. So don't be so harsh on Peter. I know Paul and Gene want you to be so you have sympathy for their behaviour and actions, grabbing your money as fast as they could, while they could. But don't you forget what they do to get your sympathy.
    They put down the ARTIST. As if that has nothing to do with Rock and Roll.
    And Vini Poncia is a record labels Hangman. That dude will kill your career faster than you can say Ringo. He shows up sneakily, on a song or two of your album. The next thing you know, his name is on everything, and you watch your record sales plummet, album after album, but you keep working with him. For some insane reason. He's grinding your career to a standstill. He's helping you create albums you'll be ashamed you made, or have to defend constantly. I learned at a very early age, that if you see Vini Poncia's name on your album, The Executioner has arrived.

I was so distraught, I called the police in Wilton CT and asked them to go to Ace’s house and ask him to call me because I was apparently going to help fix that?! I fell asleep next to the phone, on the kitchen floor, waiting. When I was about 22, I saw Ace play at a small club in Detroit. He was drunk and kissed me! Twelve year old me was giddy. Lol

    In sean delaney’s defense with firehouse, Kiss had this weird habit of putting similar songs next to each other on live albums(fh->hth, She->watchin you), and it made sense to have a little more differentiating firehouse and hotter than hell, especially since hotter is definitely the superior song compositionally. Everytime i hear watchin you on alive i cringe a bit because She is just heavier, and watchin you doesnt get a chance to shine on its own. So i get why sean raised the pitch a bit

    I am now 62 years old. We used to do Kiss concerts in abandoned buildings. I was Gene because I could blow flames using a butane lighter. It may sound lame but they would go about 6 feet high. We saw Kiss in Sudbury Ontario about this time. Cheap Trick opened for them. This was around the time of Cheap Trick's first album. No bubblegum rock back then. Pretty damn good show.

    • @stevejohnston8543
      @stevejohnston8543 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really. I just looked up the Love Gun tour dates to see when the Sudbury date was. Is that you’re home town? I would have been too young but I can only imagine what the concert would have like. Man I would have loved it, was a huge Cheap trick fan too. Glad to hear you thought it was a good show. What was the attendance like? For some reason it’s not listed. Cheers.

      @@MickLoud999 Funny I’m not sure I knew Kiss was coming at the time. I remember really wishing someone would take me to see Cheap Trick, I loved them. Thanks, figured the Elgin street barn would have been packed. I know the building only too well. Been watching hockey there for around forty years. There’s a game tonight 👍🏒 My first concert was Triumph, April Wine. Then Sabbath, Maiden and Metallica to name the notable shows. I could laugh, thé Metallica show wasn’t even that well attended. Only us metal heads were over the moon. Love to go back and look at the tour dates and think, man that was awhile ago. Time for is relative though, 10 even twenty years for me just doesn’t seem that removed for me. In the grand scheme of things it is but a speck of time.
      Anyway I’ve been jamming Kiss songs. I have this grin on my face the whole time while cranking my Marshall and playing my starburst (like the spaceman). Really don’t find any of them hard to play at all and I found Ace’s style fun to imitate, like his bending technique and vibrato. He may not have been technical but he had his own style for sure. As far as the songs, I think they’re undeniably good, catchy rock numbers that are so much fun to play. Its like what’s next and just play along without the more lengthy process of learning more complex stuff. 70’s Kiss was cool but they kind of lost me after that. Didn’t care for them in the eighties at all, it was more hard edged rock for me by then. Anyway it’s nice to look back with nostalgia to a time when all was right with them and keep that immortalized in my mind.

      @@stevejohnston8543 Yeah we used to spend are fair bit of time in Sudbury. My grandmother lived there and my grandfather died in a mining accident in the 60s. I also had cousins and friends of the family but we drifted apart these years. My friend had a band in Toronto and put an ad looking for people with a "Northern Ontario" mentality. A couple of brothers from an Italian community used to be called Gatcho (probably spelled that wrong). I think it's out near Copper Cliff. They actually joined his band though. When we saw Kiss Cheap Trick was unknown to us. We all bought their first album though. That was, in my estimation their best. It was RAW!! Songs about pedos and serial killers!!
