I really dig this genre of game, takes me right back. So many quarters spent in these cabinets. I like that you can do a bit of grinding if you want to power up before a new mission. I noticed that even with the money reduction for completed levels, you can still farm money pretty easily.
Have you ever played Tyrian 2000? As a vertical shooter with shields and upgrades, it should be perfect for you. Pick up a plasma storm sidekick before starting the first level, and it will serve you well.
You know, if anyone knows a good SHMUP that has similar systems, the upgrades and health bar stuff, let me know, I want to play it! (obviously, I have played Raptor and Revolution Ace)
Hi! I'm one of the 2 Cosmonator devs - thanks for the awesome video! You really get it, man. (Everything you mention - even down to the critical points - spot on, that's literally the stuff that we would change if we did a major overhaul.) I'm super happy you enjoyed our baby. As to your question - it's a shame but the overwhelming majority of shmup fans generally really fanatically dislike health bars in general, and they are drawn to simplicity and pure arcade-like score attacks - so these type of games specifically are in short supply, unfortunately. (Whenever I tried to plug Cosmonator on proper shmup forums during production and Early Access, people would let me know they dislike the concept even without looking into it.) Go to any of those forums and you will see the hate that games like Raptor and Tyrian (called 'euroshmups') get just for having health bars. Which is a shame, because I think there's a lot of potential in fusing old school arcade action and RPG style depth. Should be more common. Gamers tend to be very conservative when it comes to the genres that they get used to, which sometimes stifles originality and experimentation. I think the closest you'll get (in terms of really good titles that come to mind in my opinion) is some of the roguelike shmups out there, for instance Steredenn. Life bar, and lots of upgrades (in terms of weapons) to explore - but because of the roguelike element, it doesn't really provide the long-term-single-playthrough depth that you may be looking for. Still really cool though in its own roguelike way. And, well, you mention Skyforce; I'm a fan. Way too grindy, and not enough upgrades / versatile abilities, but a lot of that game is really really awesome IMO. Anyway, if all else fails, just give Cosmonator another playthrough - on a higher difficulty, and different build style. It becomes an entirely different game :)
@@bourbontank4020 I'm glad you like the video! I didn't realize how unfavorably these types of games are seen in the shmup community, I'd love to see more. I played a bit of Steredenn and enjoyed it. I do plan on going back to play Cosmonator in a different way and on higher difficulty at some point, I had so much fun with it. I'm looking forward to whatever comes next from you guys, updates, games, whatever!
@@Darksmiter We're currently making a metroidvania style platformer, working title Halfworld. It's hard to explain. Really cool project with awesome pixel art and some interesting multiple-levels-of-reality style twists. But it will take a while! (We both have full time jobs, this is more like a hobby, so we can't work on these projects as much as we'd like to.) But at some point I also really want to get to releasing another update for Cosmonator :)
@@bourbontank4020 That's awesome news! I do love metroidvania games, so I am already looking forward to it, I'll keep up with any news you guys share. Also, I can wait, you guys take your time.

I watched this entirely to make sure I was not confusing Cosmonator with Cosmoteer.
Nice, I remember this was a pretty solid one (and tough on the hardest difficulty). Power core had such an incredible soundtrack

I have played a bit of Tyrian 2000, I enjoyed it. I don't remember what made me stop though, I should go back to it.
Game doesn't look too bad, but I have never been able to get into these types of games.
fair enough, if you don't like this type of game, there isn't much to do!
