  • Are you ready to save $350 to $450 by fixing a bent CD Card Reader PIN?
Ya... Me neither, but I'm going to attempt it anyways on one of my Canon EOS 5DMKII Cameras. Wish me luck!
Sit Back... Relax... While I Sweat It Out!
Watch till the end to see if I fixed it or simply break it even worse!

Just tidied up after an hour and half unbending 2 pins on my daughters 400d. Her camera needed desoldering one of the tin rf shields to release the board. Was more painful than the camera you had as an example. Mission accomplished, an only two extra screws left over - should have paid more attention, Anyway going to tape the flash door shut now :P

Well you picked an easy one. Often the pin breaks off or has disconnected from the main board, or other mistakes are made in the disassembly/assembly process, and parts usually get lost. Most people who try this make a real mess of it, and Canon no longer sells a new main board. When they did, it cost 4x the current value of the camera. I am a retired camera repairman and botched diy pin repairs provided tons of work for me over the years.

Hi! I took apart my Canon 7D because several pins was bend. One of the pins is not there anymore because it had detatched itself (someone pressed it out of place.) i was very causeous but the camera wont turn on. Do you know why?

I too have bent pins before in my card reader and in the camera. I have never had to take it apart like you have done. I bought watch makers twisters and ground then down finer for the job. The other way to fix them is with a hypodermic needle that has a larger size needle. You slide it into the tube of the needle and bend it back just past perfect so when you let go is will be perfectly straight. I hope this helps for the next time.

Thanks for making this video, makes me a bit more confident on tackling the same model I have that has CF card issues, knowing how to take it apart correctly is half the battle.
The camera knows a card is present, but won't format it. The pins look ok, but the camera says it's unable to format when an attempt to format is made. And even if the card is formatted correctly on a PC, it still gives the same error. So maybe it has some pin damage at the other end of the pins.

  • @HomeroAGonzalez

Ha Ha, I knew you would nail it!! now, to prevent this for ever happening again, get a CF to SD Adapter and leave the CF portion permanently inside the camera and just take the sd cards out as needed. Also, you can leave a CF card permanently in and copy photos using the USB cable, kind of annoying but cannot bend the pins this way....

I would think for studio work you would just have your hard drive or whatever you're sending the stuff to on your network in your business or home and that way there you never even touch the card or the cards lot everything you videotape in the studio this case of yoga studio go straight to the hard drive and can watch it right back on your laptop about as fast as the recorder records it it sends it over to my NAS storage on the local network here and now every laptop in the place can watch it or not edit it do whatever we need to do to it never touching the card in the cards lot which is what I don't understand is why people are always pulling the card out putting in the car and out pulling the card out putting it back in for what exactly It's just as easy to plug up the HDMI cable to whatever and move it that way if it's got to be moved so quickly do it right on the network while it's taping

I have managed to do the same repair without opening the camera, by straighten a heavily bent pin using a Swiss Army blade and a pair of thin twisers. It is tricky, but doable with patience.

Almost forgot! If you need I can make a pin straightener top and ship it where you want it. I have a camera but someone else got to it before me and broke one pin. Any tricks on replacing the pin? Do you sell the pins or do I need to buy the whole board? I can solder just would have to have a spare pin to do it.
    Thanks again!

I opened my R5 so that I could install one of those copper heatsinks from Kolari Vision. It all went well, except I dropped one screw and couldn't find it.
So now there's one screw missing, which is underneath part of the rubber grip where it can't be seen.
