    Trying to limit my collection to five varieties. But this one and verdino del nord, campaniere are worth considering for a short season zone 6a. Thanks.

    Is there a source for the black celeste you would recommend? I believe you have just solved a mystery I've had since the early 1980's. I believe this is the same variety an elderly lady and neighbor had growing back then (she was in her mid 90's at that time). She could not remember the cultivar but thought her husband ordered the tree from Bountiful Ridge nurseries in MD. This was likely in the 1940's or earlier. I know a great deal about fig cultivars and grow many but her fig always was a puzzle to me as to its identity. It looked exactly like, (and I believe was) the black celeste you featured. It was one of the best figs I had ever tasted and while many around here grow figs I never knew of anyone that had a fig like this one. I now must try and grow this cultivar so please give me reliable sources if you know any. Thanks for doing all these educational video's. I always enjoy watching them.

      A few growers have it. Brian in LA or Dalton Durio are good sources.

      @@deborahmartin843 That fig is long gone, It was bush hogged likely in the 90's best I recall. It was already in decline, not being taken care of and overgrown with weeds and such since the owner died and her kin could not take care of things properly. I did take some cuttings back in the 80's and had one in a container for several years before I lost it due to a mishap. I remember being told once that it was celeste but I knew it was different than any celeste I have ever seen or grown. As Ross stated in his video it was the most attractive fig I had ever seen being almost black with bluish bloom and the interior was the deepest red with exceptional flavor and texture.

    I've noticed the interior color can change due to cooler temps.

    I hope you go back and see the look on your face. Because you really had that emotional response. I am going to need that fig. The Celeste is one of the go to figs in north Texas. I wonder if the Black Celeste would do as well here?
    Nice job of videos! Peace out!

    Ross would you say that black Celeste has an early season? or mid season harvest?

  • @ceili
    @ceili 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey Ross, do you include performance consistency when rating varieties? For example, does the variety perform really well every year, weather permitting. I say this as i find some varieties that i have grown have good and bad years.

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely. My favorite varieties all have that factored in.

    Can you tell us the name of the variety here? We will try to get some cuttings. Or you can help selling some cuttings to us. Thanks.

    the three expensive trees i had shipped this summer (all different vendors, one from you) have yet to show growth. two i havent even potted up yet because of it and no roots showing. they didnt like the box trip i guess.

      You gotta up pot them. There's only so much fertilizer and water in those small pots.

      @@RossRaddi i fertilize and bottom water all of them. two days after arrival i did up pot the paradiso i got from you because it had roots and appeared stable but no new growth since. still looks exactly like it did when it arrived. i have rooted many varieties myself this summer here from cutting in solo cups and they are growing fine with my fert regimen. same thing happened last year with the buzzone i had shipped. it is wonderful this season. Nice Black Celeste fig!

    1st year cutting I got from Brian just gave me my first Black Celeste. For those haters that imply that Ross has hyped it up for whatever reason I say stop being a keyboard warrior and get one. This fig from a first year tree was as advertised in looks and taste, however small. Only one bad thing about it… I have to save half for my wife.
