It's called failing safely instead of failing secure. It's not high security like a bank. In case of emergency; electronic locks have to loose power in order for people to flee to safety instead of being trapped inside. Their electric locks either suffered a short or the battery they had powering them died. It happens.

But to my knowledge there is usually an alternative system often mechanical to bypass the system eg many electronic safes have both an electronic keypad and a mechanical lock to open the safe door in case the electronic lock fails due to lack of power for example.

It's a magnetic lock. We have them all over at my work. He apparently has the wrong ones installed. He needs fail-secure locks instead of fail-safe locks. Fail-secure locks remain unlocked when electricity is supplied, and lock when there is no power.

While it would be justified to sue indeed, it's nice to see some people not resorting to litigation. In this case, nothing was damaged and the women reimbursed the value of stolen goods ~ x10. Plus there is the disfunction of the entrance door, which looked like the restaurant was open. I don't condone the rest, but it was no big deal IMHO.
