I've felt this way since I was 12.... I should have been returning from war in Vietnam in time to go to Woodstock 1969. Instead I got screwed at life by being born in the early 90's.
Agreed, as a former teenage hippie! I supect that Richie and his ilk would be so strongly against the corporate & governmental totalitarian covid mandates and restrictions.
He sang this song in 1963 during the March on Washington. I was there and witnessed the performance. He was set up on a platform on the Mall not far from the Lincoln Memorial.
Rest in peace, big man. I'm grateful that I was able to see you before you passed away. I was only 14 or 15, and I remember when walking up to him to get my cd's signed, he looks at me and proceeds to look at his body guard while pointing at me and saying "We need more like him at our shows." What a kind, loving person he was, and he will be missed.
Beautifully put 🥰👍. I saw him whenever he came through New York, which was fairly often. He had time and love for everyone, regardless of who you were.
I got to sit down and talk with him at mountain jam for awhile , what a genuinely great human being. I think of that moment often. Miss you richie! ✌️🎸
This has to be the most inspiring man, and when I found out he died I was devastated. I may be young but I grew up on watching Woodstock 1969 & listening to his music. He's an amazing man, and now he's free. Rest in Peace Richie.
Ethereal and Immortal persons never go they stay in the Home of our Hearts. I learnt it from Him that there's a phone in my bosom .... and its time I add .... beyond calling on that phone .... my Father, brother, sister .... mother .... I'll call him up from my heart ... Hi Richie ... take care RIP .... the old world charm, simple, straight forward ... a Guru in all respects !!
Thank You Richie Havens for all that you have given us. Even today, I find you again, this time on your signature model Richie Havens Guild D40 acoustic guitar I'm thinkin about buying. Your videos are so strong and powerfelt. Always remembered, RIP, and thanks for all your music. You did it all!!!
I will never forget the first time I saw Woodstock the film in 1971. So many unforgettable performances, but I will remember this song and this man for all my life. Everytime he sings "Freedom" that I have seen, it is so individually melting.
I gave him a copy of my bands tape mountains and valleys and when I saw him a few months later he walked up to me after the show and said good songwriting and shook my hand
I always listen with great pleasure and interest to the songs of this singer since his debut at Woodstock way back in 1969. He still manages to convey my very strong emotions with his voice and guitar particularly in this piece of music.
So much wisdom and power in that aged face of his, amazing how with the click of the mouse we can travel 40 years in the past and watch him preform this song at Woodstock, a true inspiration you are Mr.Havens .
I was fortunate enough to meet Richie at a pre-show get together at The Odium in East Greenwich a few years back.. He IS as cool as he looks.. Extremely warm and loving.. and yet, a regular guy who is as interested in hearing what you have to say as you are in what he has.. he signed a poster for me.. and a book in which I keep 30 years of my own lyrics.. and thanked each person individually and collectively for coming to the event.. I Saw a concert that night, made a Brother for life! (~):-#}
How ironic..... I have that movie playing on Netflix right now but I got bored and put headphones in to listen to the music of a generation that I should have been born in.
"Still here," were the words that Richie said to me when we met before a performance in Bethlehem, PA. Richie had played at my club, The Hearth, in Pipersville, PA and he always remembered me. So gracious, and I will miss him.
Richie Havens performed tthis song in 1963 during the March on Washington. He was set up on a platform on the Mall not far from the Lincoln Memorial. I was there and witnessed the performance.
Exactly, most people don't focus on this era or the music and sole these people had. They'd rather listen to new music that has no real place in history. I feel the bond with all 60s, 70s & 80s music, thats where my heart is.
I used to work in an office directly across the street from a recording studio where Richie was working and used to see him in the street every day. Richie was always accessible, charming and friendly. Everybody he met became a friend and a lifetime fan.
A spine-tingling performance, and what a soulful voice. The fast rythmic guitar playing is superb, it's like he's his own rythm section. Wise lyrics too....
I was lucky. I got to see him in concert. I sat six feet away from him for two hours and got lost in his talent. I spoke with him briefly after the show he was the picture of grace. He will be missed.
Someone needs to make a montage video of this that cuts back to his performance at Woodstock and finishes back with this ending. I think it would make for a beautiful tribute to this man and this incredible song.
Me encanta cómo se ve o se siente , cómo Él se mete o ingresa en su energía maravillosa......realmente siento como el se adentra en la alegría , la paz , la unidad : Gracias Cha!
my neighbor, my friend, a true gentleman... the first time i met him I called him Mr. Havens... he said to me... call me Richie... a truly gentle soul who is sadly missed... Rest well my brother!
There are is a certain group of young people like us that feel a bond and connection with this era, the musicians, and the people that belonged to it.
I've felt this way since I was 12.... I should have been returning from war in Vietnam in time to go to Woodstock 1969. Instead I got screwed at life by being born in the early 90's.
So true, to the bone…..
Agreed, as a former teenage hippie!
I supect that Richie and his ilk would be so strongly against the corporate & governmental totalitarian covid mandates and restrictions.
To imagine he made this song up right there on the spot, on that woodstock stage. With half a million crowd. Proves what a genius he was.

coooool
I met him in Denver, he shook my hand and we exchanged a few words. The man just emanated warmth, I'll never forget it.
Beautifully put 🥰👍. I saw him whenever he came through New York, which was fairly often. He had time and love for everyone, regardless of who you were.
Did you hear what you going to do with me now?
Probably the greatest song ever to "happen"
Respect from Ireland to Mr Richie Havens, we are free when we hear your voice!!!
@All About Guitars utterly staggering if you think about it. Lets see todays artists try that. Or any for that matter
I got to sit down and talk with him at mountain jam for awhile , what a genuinely great human being. I think of that moment often. Miss you richie! ✌️🎸

And he just went next door
He was one of those people who always gave every thing he had!
This is one guy we can say truly found and personified freedom on earth---long live the legend of Richie Havens.
THIS should be our National Anthem.

I gave him a copy of my bands tape mountains and valleys and when I saw him a few months later he walked up to me after the show and said good songwriting and shook my hand
Wow 😲
I wrote this for him
Looks like his Guild to me.
I always listen with great pleasure and interest to the songs of this singer since his debut at Woodstock way back in 1969. He still manages to convey my very strong emotions with his voice and guitar particularly in this piece of music.
Loved this man then and still do. Thank you sir. Peace and love to you and yours. Miss those days. We soooo need them now.
I will never forget you singing this at Woodstock when I was at school, one day Richie we will have Freedom.Rest in Peace.
What a beautiful soul. Thank you for the music.
So much wisdom and power in that aged face of his, amazing how with the click of the mouse we can travel 40 years in the past and watch him preform this song at Woodstock, a true inspiration you are Mr.Havens .
any show that ive seen Richie he still puts 190% into it---he is the greatest guy to talk with or have your picture taken with--a true gentleman
.. not a song but a piece of history..
40 years and the man still has that awesome voice. Gd bless him with a long, happy life.
Music is such an amazing thing. You can tell that he's imagining himself sitting right back on that wooden stool at Woodstock. ✌
just like almost gone..clap your hands for FREEDOM..

Un chanteur irremplaçable
Quelle belle voix ❤
I'm one of your fans Sir Richie..from.the Phillipines
Pray for the day that everyone deserves to be free and to be recognized as members of the human family!
Legend is an understatement for Richie
Just because a person is a music performer, does not mean that he should be one. In his case he was suppose to be one!
thats good to hear. Your generation is gonna need more people listening to these songs. We're losing this country. These guys were prophets.
Deep sincerity and generous smile: a real care for the soul! Thank you and congratulations!
Rest in Peace my Friend,.....i grew up with his music ,..The Rebels blood started with your music
This day is a sad and unfair day,....
