    I am in love with Science Fiction and I think one of the final comments of the video "a future where black people exist - because alot of scifi doesnt have that - we've all mysteriously left" is such a great point.

      you could google them and check the out. I'd recommend Octavia Butlers last book Fledgling as an introduction her work

      @@tonymarshall3978 I love her xenogenesis saga! I just want an easy to read list, because pausing and rewinding the TH-cam video to get the names is difficult for me.

    I really love this presentation style with the interviews and visual aides, and running through the notable authors and books in a genre. I would love to see more though I hope PBS studios would provide a little more assistance to ensure that the sound and graphic quality were of a high quality.

    It's sad how many people just impulsively dislike a video because of surface assumptions.

    Marginally related: A Science Fiction series that does have black characters: Speaker for the Dead takes place mostly on a planet colonized primarily by Brazilians. And so the majority of characters happen to be black.
    The next book that I can think of that I have read that is more authentically African is The No. 1 Ladies' Detective agency, which I now realize was written by a British man who taught law in Botswana.
    Now I need to read some Octavia Butler or something. There are areas of science fiction that I have not read.

      Also the...um...does the trilogy HAVE a trilogy-name? Anyway "Blue Remembered Earth", "On the Steel Breeze", and "Poseidon's Wake" by Alistair Reynolds all take place in a future Earth where there's an advanced African Federation that has their own space agency. The P.O.V. characters are usually from the Akinya family, descended from the most famous space hero...ine. :)
      Basically it's a futuristic but still with pretty old-fashioned buildings and art around, carefully preserved, and while people do mix with each other all the time the different cultures have only been _stirred_ together, not completely smeared out into one thing. I wouldn't say they're perfectly written, but in general they're pretty good and hey! Space elevator out the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro! :D
      I'm not quite sure if the books count as Afro-Futurism, (although they are, well, literally a FUTURE where black people and their cultures are very much still existent and represented), or just Pretty Woke (For a White Guy) sci-fi, but either way it's interesting.

  • @tonymarshall3978
    @tonymarshall3978 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    They credit Octavia Butler with both Kindred and Earthsea, Earthsea is by Ursula Le Guin. You really need to fire your reseracher or at least double check the credited author as it is an insult to both to these great female writers to bundle their work as a single entity. It also ruins an otherwise really good video as it tells the audience that not only have you not read the book mentioned but that you couldn't even go so far as reading the covers of the books mentioned

    'state violence'. please, tell me in wich african country a black woman would have the resources to write and publish sci fi books and to be so... an euphemism for 'fat', please? and the hero´s journey is being reinvented and perverted all the time. BREAKIND BAD is one of the (if not THE) most important tv dramas and walts journey is about becoming a... monster.

    • @Geoffery_of_Monmouth

      Shakespeare wrote using a 5 act play structure, but yeah your point still stands.

    • @vrixphillips
      @vrixphillips 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I mean, being able to do stuff doesn't mean the state isn't violent. And surely you don't think the police shooting a 12 year old boy with a nerf gun /isn't/ violent? By the way, Nigeria is one of those countries. They have a booming economy and women in the larger cities [like Lagos] can be actresses, fashion designers, writers, the sky is the limit. The immense continent of Africa is not limited to huts and hunters as many in the west seem to think.

    • @theatomicghostbr
      @theatomicghostbr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      THERES NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN or something like that. anyway, yes, its not new, but the video make it sound like perverting the hero's journey is some kind of really original and bold smart move. i talked about BB for being a very popular example of the extreme opposity of the hero's journey that still is warm on pop culture.
