A lot of the humour comes from the understated lyrics, eg "an informal variation of the normal recipe". I wonder how that translates into Japanese, a language and culture characterised by understatement.
This is the production of Amon Miyamoto, a former musical theatre dancer in Japan, who has gone on to become one of their key directors of musicals and opera -- and of course was adapted, in English, for the Broadway revival, though by all accounts it lost something in the translation back to English. Wonderful to see!

It's more modern than any traditional style, though there are still tiny aspects of Kabuki and Noh. Amon Miyamoto, the director of this production, said that he found the original boring. Also seen other Japanese comments echo this sentiment. Maybe most of the traditional elements seem outdated, even to a Japanese audience?
