    • @darthtrump4428

      it probably cant keep up with 5 mm or 6mm of full tang, there is no steel with such high strength to be better than a flat bar of good steel, the difference in shape crossection of hllow handle vs flat bar is too much to overcome
      i mean probably it would be better in torsion loads, and sideways loads, but vertical it cant be better than full tang (flat bar)
      yeah both of them are wayyy above what a normal use would need, but that is not the point

    When I was a kid, my dad had one of those, and I used to borrow it sometimes and take it into the woods. I'm trying to figure out whether his version is crappier or if that version is crappier. Pros: That one was sharper out of the box and has a metal handle [Edit, looks like that was a plastic handle after all). Cons, his version had a thicker blade, but also a hollow plastic handle. It's amazing that piece of junk survived long enough to be thrown in the trash.
    Also, if I was forced to use that piece of junk, (even when I was a dumb kid), I'd put in a bunch of my own matches, painted with clear nail polish (an easy trick to make regular matches waterproof).

    Had one of tose as a child, it wasn't stainless, and i spend evenenings using the sharpening stone in it while watching TV. It got pretty sharp. The wire wood saw didn't work really, the matches didn't really work, but it was a knife that cut and if it got dull, there was the little sharpening stone already with it. And most importantly, it was mine.
    Years later i got a great use out of it's construction: In engineering school we needed things to galvanize. So i unsrewed the blade, calculated the right time and currents, and nickel plated it. Never used it since, but it's pretty shiny and won't rust since 😎.
    but concering your judgement of the knife: even with normal matches or your firesteel you weren't able to get a fire going in this rain, so blaming the knife is a bit of an overreaction. It only broke when you tried to break it. I was kinf of surprised that it did hold up so long.

    What is it like to be a forest? Breathe in millions of leaves. Watch with millions of eyes. Feel with millions of hands. And sing. To sing an infinitely beautiful and lingering song, in the melody of which both the death rattle and the furious scream fit equally harmoniously. And the rustle of grass, and crying. And silence.

  • @Leightr

    Back in the 80s I did indeed fall for the "Your $12.99 Survival Knife!!!" ad in a magazine as an 11-12 year old. Sh*t blade with a ONE inch threaded tang that was held on by one nut to a hollow handle packed with fishline, hooks, cable saw, etc and a compass capping the whole thing. Pleather/ vinyl sheath. Edit: Yeah, the cable is supposed to be used with the split rings under the cap as a cable saw. Edit#2: Hiking and backpacking in the (almost) always damp Pacific Northwest the emergency firestarter I carry is a 15 min road flare cut down to five minutes with the cut end sealed in wax. I carry three. I have found that when I find myself in the sh*t and need to get warm or get hypothermic I've no time to eff around with a firesteel.

      A knife should never be converted to a spear in a survival situation. Les Stroud has a good bought about it. A simple sharpened stick will do enough damage to most any game on the planet in a self defense situation: No need to attach a knife to the end. Unless your need it to reach and cut fruit or something of the such.
      But, if it works for you, then screw it. Might as well do it. 😊

    Your match fire making was really hilarious. You clearly have no experience in using matches in adverse conditions. Such experience comes if you lived in a time before cheap lighters became abundant and you smoked cigarettes. Clearly you are not matching these two requirements.
    As an old ex-smoker I can assure I will be able to light a fire with at most two match trials in such conditions. You just need to take the wind into account a bit better and use your hands to make a shape preserving from the wind.
    But I agree about the general evaluation of the knife.

    Sometimes you can do everything right to make a fire but conditions say NOPE! 🦉

  • @eddieguyvh4765
    @eddieguyvh4765 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Matches are varying quality. When you find good ones, with a good strike surface on the box, coat the matches with candle wax. This will make them waterproof and all you have to do is remove the wax from the head before striking it. The wax makes it burn longer, also. Put the matches and the removed strike surface in a small waterproof box (like a vitamin C tube). You've made yourself a fire kit that will last forever.
    That's not the best way to make a fire, just the best way to have great matches. Nothing beats the reliability of a good knife and a ferrocerium rod coupled with a magnesium block (with the knowledge on how to use it, of course).

You should have prep the fire way better. But I guess you wanted to make something crapper than it is. But the plastic handle sucks. But the knife will save a life. If used right.

    I'm ancient enough to remember when these were new in the mid 80s (at the same time as Rambo II was released) and one of the cool kids in our scout troop had one. However at the same time here in the UK the utter legend John Lofty Wiseman, former SAS survival instructor, made a tv series which was extremely popular and the SAS survival handbook hit the shops, and it was made common knowledge that you should avoid these and that a full tang knife was the way to go, so I never took any interest in these.

      It'll outpace my schrade walden without much trouble
      His hatchet tends to do well also, but it can't outpace my W49, but I've also reprofiled the edge for very deep cutting into material, 22° per side and convexed slightly, same as most of my machetes, it's a very shallow, yet strong edge with a good steel

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives
      @DutchBushcraftKnives  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      a very cheap fire starting kit could be just cotton fluff with wax in it. It'll give you a flame for a few minutes which would be enough to dry and light small twigs. Combine it with a fire steel and maybe even a regular garbage bag to create a fast waterproof roof to get it started.
      - Garbage bag (preferably orange to make it more multi purpose)
      - Cotton fluff (first aid)
      - Wax (leather care or medical)
      - Fire steel with good scraper
      - BIC lighter
      - Waterproof container big enough to also store some found tinder like birch bark etc
      - Put in a few meters of paracord it would make it able to make a friction fire if you really need to as well as help you create a roofing with the garbage bag
      a lot of these items carry multiple purposes (medical, tool care, storage etc.)
      If you want to make it even more compact there is paracord available with fire starting material inside (wax pre aplied) I have no experience with it though.
      This kit you could make for below $30,- depending on which brands of what you pick
