Proof wanted the 12 best Detroit rappers who could come in-and-out of the group when they want, but still be considered "D12". 12 members overall, but not always 12 people in the studio at the same time. This then evolved into the concept that the 6 members would have a "second personality" to keep the D12 concept alive. Obviously with Eminem, this would be his Eminem "persona" and his "Slim Shady" personality. The type of track they were doing determined with personality was used. For more "laid back" or "serious" tracks, it would be their "primary" personas to use (Eminem).... for their more "aggressive" or "comical" tracks, it would be their "secondary" personas to use (Slim Shady). Because of this, they had a very unique sound that has been hard to match because the talent level has always been the same, but it is the use of words/beats that changes. It is why you can both 'be real' with D12 and completely "pumped up and ready to rumble" with D12 as well. And since they were ALL friends from the same area, and struggled just to get on stage when they were young and constantly around each other and competing against each other, they formed a true bond of respect and friendship...... Which is why those of us who have kind of followed both Em and D12 find this track so hard-hitting when it comes to the emotional truth being told.

I can't think of another rapper that is as real and transparent as Em. He's let us in to his whole mind, including the self-doubt and all that. Not just the cool stuff, but the REAL REAL stuff. I've felt the same way and try to explain the same thing to people that even when someone makes it you still have to push for your success you can't always expect that person to get you going because even if you get them on top if they aren't putting in the work now they won't put it in when they make it to the top.

Sadly no group did this better than the greatest rock band of all time Led Zeppelin when they lost John Bonham their drummer at the height of their success. Except for once to play with Bonham's son in his place many yrs later. But it kept the group iconic, the guys friends and they all went on to do their own thing.
