    Barbas's warning about giving Umbra to Clavicus Vile turned out to be true: forty years later the Umbra spirit attacked Clavicus and fled from his realm, powering the Infernal City of Umbriel which went on a path of destruction in Tamriel, namely destroying Gideon, Stormhold, and Lilmoth in Black Marsh, parts of Morrowind, and Cheydinhal in Cyrodiil.

    You actually can bash with a shield in Oblivion, but you need skill level 75 in block, and it occurs randomly when you block an attack

  • @Danche925
    @Danche925 6 ปีที่แล้ว +83

    The Emperor actually called for his Legion to burn down the town of Hackdirt, and the survivors rebuilt what they could. The whole Hackdirt quest is actually a parody/reference of HP Lovecraft's story 'A shadow over Insmouth.' Oh, and the reason the Legion was ordered to burn hackdirt was because of occult activity I believe.

    • @wu-ren
      @wu-ren 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Indeed, and in Innsmouth the townsfolk have the facial features of fish (big eyes, small noses, big lips and a roundish face) much like in Hackdirt

    • @feddyvonwigglestein3481
      @feddyvonwigglestein3481 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      So the 'outsiders' are Cyrodiilic Imperial soldiers. They make it sound like a foreign army or roving band of rogue mercenaries burned their town down.

    • @Danche925
      @Danche925 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's more like a caged animal that has been beaten and now snarls at anything that comes near it. Hackdirt was a pretty lively and big town once upon a time, and they traded blood and souls of normal everyday people with the Deep Ones in return for wealth and prosperity.

  • @BippoErnesti
    @BippoErnesti 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I know everyone will probably say this, but Umbra is actually the most powerful longsword in the game. Weightless, too, if you never talk to Clavicus after retrieving the sword. Speaking of which, I'm still not sure if you know this, but active quest items will (almost) never actually weigh anything even if they display a weight number in your inventory.
    I forgot Hackdirt was a town of angry Wes Johnsons.
    EDIT: Also, shield bashing is actually a thing in Oblivion, but it triggers randomly after your Block skill reaches Expert tier (75). You'll probably start seeing enemies do that soon once they scale up a little more.

  • @Alcatraz78
    @Alcatraz78 6 ปีที่แล้ว +119

    I would never trade the sword for the mask, it's one of the most unique and powerful weapons in the game

    • @Torgomasta
      @Torgomasta 6 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      The game even disincentivizes you to complete the quest. Umbra will scale with your level and remain zero weight if you don’t complete the quest.

    'Everything levels up with you' is one of the most critical failures of Oblivion. Forcing players to maximize each level up or they will end up like Mac.

    • @xXSUBJECT4Xx
      @xXSUBJECT4Xx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I think the only game that really did leveling right was Morrowind.
      In Oblivion, everything becomes super powerful and everybody has super powerful armor.
      In Skyrim, after enough levels you are pretty much invincible and everyone still is using fur armor.
      I think Morrowind found a decent balance- it's hard in some places, easy in others. You can really only say you are powerful after you've collected ancient artifacts of great power and have leveled up super high in combat stats.

    • @bebo2629
      @bebo2629 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Subject I love Morrowind but the belencing was very bad. It starts hard and ends easy. And the belencing in Bloodmoon and Tribunal was all over the place. Overall I think Skyrims belencing is IMO the best but still not good.

    "It's weird that everyone levels up with you."
    Yeah that's one thing I don't like about Oblivion and Skyrim. Having NPCs level with you, especially endlessly made it feel like you never got any more powerful. Sure there were plenty of mobs that would level up with you in Morrowind, but those tended to be animals and monsters, and even then there weren't gobs of em all the time, instead most NPCs you fought were named, and by extension never respawned. So if you went somewhere with super powerful NPCs before you were ready, you knew it, or if you went somewhere later on with weak NPCs you felt all the more powerful because they stand no chance against you.
    Plus it felt a bit more memorable to see that each life taken had a name instead of endless waves of 'Bandits'. Kinda could make you think about what you were doing a little more.

    To add to the lore:
    Lorkhan tricked the Aedra into creating Mundus, which is earth in the game (Tamriel is just a continent on Mundus) Nirn is the realm between Aetherius and Oblivion. The stars in the sky were made by the Aedra who escaped after killing Lorkhan, the sun was created by one of the more powerful Aedra- Magnus. The Magna Ge were the Aedra who escaped Nirn into Aetherius, so the stars and the sun are actually big holes in the sky that lead to Aetherius
    The Daedra are the ones who simply didn't help Lorkhan create Mundus. Not all Daedra are evil. Clavicus is simply a trickster, Azura is mostly good, Meridia is good and Sheogorath is neither good nor bad.
    Some of the Aedra make up the Eight Divines with Talos being the ascended soul of Tiber Septim who really isn't an Aedra, kind of became one but we'll just say he isn't one to make it easier. But all the stars are holes made by escaped Aedra.

    • @Practitioner_of_Diogenes
      @Practitioner_of_Diogenes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You got Nirn and Mundus backwards. Nirn is the planet/earth, while Mundus is the realm that Nirn is located. The realm between Nirn and Aetherius is Oblivion.
      The Void is beyond even Aetherius.

    "Shadow over Hackdirt" is a reference to HP Lovecraft's "Shadow over Innismouth". The Mouslin Inn is a reference to the Gillman Inn, the Deep Ones are a reference to the Old Ones, the fact everyone is in-bred is a reference to the Fish-People. It's a weird and somewhat subtle reference. During the quest, if you sleep in the Inn, you get attacked in your sleep, which is a direct reference to a passage from the original story.

    The Umbra sword actually does cause Clavicus a lot of problems, as covered in the novel set between Oblivion and Skyrim.
    The sentient spirit of Umbra actually escaped the sword and cut away a chunk of Vile's power, along with a portion of his realm which became the Infernal City. The book is a decent read though nothing special, and explains why Umbra doesn't return in Skyrim.

    You can actually shield bash in Oblivion, you just need to level up Blocking enough to get the perk. It might be either Expert Block or Master I don't remember. But when you get a high enough Block skill, the game will automatically shield bash after you successfully block an attack, unless you get staggered.

    Here's some background lore for you guys. Umbra is a sword originally in Morrowind, belonging to an Orc at the time. Supposedly it just possesses whomever wields it. The "ruin" Barbas talks about refers to the eventual events of the 2 published Elder Scrolls novels, which have the spirit of Umbra itself running amock in Tamriel some 200 years before Skyrim. So in giving back the sword Mac has brought cataclysm to the world, and by extent the Empire. Thanks Mac

    A little bit of a lore lesson, if you are willing to read. There are actually way more Aedras than Daedras. The difference between them is that Aedras are those beings, that worked on creating Mundus, so the world the game is set in. Daedras are those, who didn't take part in the process of creation of the world. They literally translate to "not our ancestors", and Aedras are "our ancestors". The Divines however, are those Aedras who not only took part in creation of Mundus, but also decided to stay "inside" (not get back to Aeternus [Aedras realm]) and kind of power up the world. They are actually sometimes visnle on the sky as planets, although it is just how the mortals minds interpretate their presence. It is impossible for us to understand how actually nine infinite beings can fit in a limited space (Mundus) so theres is still place for anything else. Also another difference between Daedras and Aedras is, that Aedras can create. They can craft something from their own essence. Daedras can ONLY change. Good examples are daedric artifacts, such as Volendrung, so Malacaths hammer. It was originally a dwarvem hammer, which was transformed by the Daedric infulence. Daedras also can't die. Their essence isn't strictly "related" to anything made of "them" (becouse they can't do it). On the other hand, Aedras, so also the Divines, can create something form "nothing", so their essence is tied to some created objects. That means they can die. Best example is Lorkhan, or Shor, or Shezzar, same dude. He was an Aedra who started the whole plan to create Mundus. Akatosh, or Auri-El, killed him with his bow (for kind of tricking other Aedras into spending their essence to creata Mundus) and placed his heart in a place which today is know as The Red Mountain. It is said that Messer and Secunda, Nirns' moons, are Lorkhans body and head. Another example of a "dead god" is Yffre (can't really remember the spelling, sorry), an Aedra whose power is decribed as Nirns roots, whatever the fuck that means.
    That was a long lesson, I hope maybe someone found at least some informations useful or interesting. You got any questions, asked ahead, although a lot of lore is still pretty much a mistery, and that's why it's so cool.
    Sorry for a long comment, love you Max and Emmet, keep up the good work

    "For a while I was a scamp, making deals with Orcs". In Morrowind, you can find a scamp called "Creeper" in a place called "Ghorak Manor". Ghorak Manor is filled with Orcs, and Creeper will sell you stuff and buy pretty much everything you have, at full value.
    So I guess this means Barbas appears in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, making him one of the most often reoccurring characters in the Elders Scrolls.

    I would love to see you two do a Morrowind play through, only downside is that it is more story based and immersion focused, and doesn't have the whacky ragdolls or comedic moments of Oblivion.
    Thanks for these amazing let's plays!

    Also if you guys tackle Skyrim next, it's worth taking Mjoll as a follower. You can get her at level 13 and she's one of the most versatile followers in the game. She's proficient in heavy armour, good with two-handed, one-handed & shield, pretty accurate with a bow and can even dual-wield.
    She's very tanky and also can't be killed. She also has a lot of radiant dialogue while out on the road which adds more to her character than other followers.

    Barbas warns you because the sword has some of vile's essence , and if you give it to him he will return it to his relm, where the swords essence escapes and wreaks havoc there... which also affects tamriel but i don't remember how. Also you guys should really read about the creation of Nirn , it may change your perspective of the game so beware. Btw,awesome vid as always.

    Found this on elder scrolls wiki:
    Barbas's warning about giving Umbra to Clavicus Vile turned out to be true: forty years later the Umbra spirit attacked Clavicus and fled from his realm, powering the Infernal City of Umbriel which went on a path of destruction in Tamriel, namely destroying Gideon, Stormhold, and Lilmoth in Black Marsh, parts of Morrowind, and Cheydinhal in Cyrodiil.

    If you follow up on the Jemane brothers quest you started and do the one afterwards too, I believe the reward is a unique looking ebony shield - the design is a gold tree (Chorrol's symbol), pretty sweet :D

    I'd like to clear up the lore stuff at the start.
    Lorkhan was indeed the one that went "Hey, let's make a realm!" but it was 14 Daedra that didn't partake in Mundus' creation. Meridia was one of the Et'Ada that was helping in Mundus' creation, but talked to the 14 Daedra and was kicked out by the Et'Ada because of that. This is what makes 15 Daedric Princes. After a while, Magnus is like "Why do I feel weaker than normal?" then realizes that working on Mundus is weakening him. So he's like "PEACE" and leaves the realm and leaves a massive as fuck hole in the sky (AKA, the sun). Many of the other spirits are like "What was his problem?" and continue working. After a little bit longer, more spirits are like "WHY ARE WE GETTING WEAKER?" and realize why Magnus left. Of
    course, not all of them figure this out, but the ones that did gtfo'd Mundus also leaving holes in the sky (AKA, the stars).
    The ones that stayed were the Ehlnofey (They stayed by choice, not because they literally couldn't). The ones that still had a decent amount of power were the Aedra (AKA, Divines), and the Et'Ada that were even weaker than the Aedra became men and mer or even laws of nature. Iirc, men sided with Lorkhan, while the mer sided with the Aedra.
    A big war happens, men (called wandering Ehlnofey) are defeated by the Aedra and mer (called static Ehlnofey), after which the Aedra "killed" Lorkhan. But Lorkhan cheated by being literally tied to Mundus on such a level that the only way he could truly die was if Mundus itself was outright destroyed (This is where the Aldmeri Dominion seeking out to destroy the towers theory comes from). So, Auriel and the rest of the Aedra "disabled" Lorkhan by ripping his heart out of his body and cutting him in half (His body is literally the moons) and Auriel tied the heart of Lorkhan to an arrow and fired the arrow from his bow. Where the heart landed became red mountain.
    After that, the Aedra became the planets in Mundus and the rest of the Ehlnofey either became more men/mer or became other laws of nature (Also called "Earth Bones").
    Another Daedra was created by a powerful Ehlnofey being eaten by one of the princes. Then the 17th prince was created by one of the princes being cursed by the other 15 princes. So, until the Shivering Isles, there was 16 princes, just one was two sides of one coin...

    I think the point is Clavicus makes deals and he sends Barbas out to try and get you to renegade on his deals so he can corrupt you and claim your soul etc like all evil gods do. Barbas is the trickster, which makes people think Barbas is the real god and Clavicus vile is just a servant, a part of the ruse as it were. Who knows, Clavicus is a cool character in eldar scrolls.

    • @Theguyimreplyingto

    • @adamrules01
      @adamrules01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah thats the point, he makes you a better deal but its not the one you made. He's trying to get you to break the pact with the god so the god can do whatever he wants with your soul.

    • @Theguyimreplyingto
      @Theguyimreplyingto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, two things, first of all, how do we know that breaking the deal results in him claiming your soul, and second of all, clavicus is the one who tries to make you break the deal in Skyrim. The deal was, give the axe get the masque, clavicus tried to get you to keep the axe.

    You can actually shield bash in Oblivion, but it's an automatic counterattack that you acquire when reaching expert block, you can't do it manually like in Skyrim.
