  • How to cover up neckline cleavage! This one is a very quick sewing tutorial, something I came up with on the fly for this bridesmaid dress!
    This is a bit of a departure from my usual historical dress sewing, but hopefully, it gives you a laugh and thoughts about making your own modern clothing more wearable!

    i’m 100% convinced that women’s clothes aren’t designed to be flattering on anyone, they’re only supposed to look good on hangers.

    • @elii1340000
      @elii1340000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +160

      Women's clothes are designed to be flattering on exactly one person (most commonly someone weighing 100lbs or less, with a 24 inch waist and a bust and butt to match). Then the pattern is scaled into different pre set sizes and is expected to look good on every single body type-which is, of course, ridiculous.

    I sewed a silk dress for myself which ended up with a too-low V-neck. @@MiljaHahto I also have my boobs quite high. I once bought a dress that looked great, but the neckline went all the way down to the bottom of my bra. I have sewn a few extra buttons on it and it worked. Then I saw a woman in the same dress who also had big boobs and the dress fit her perfectly. I was envious :D and I might have looked a bit creepy if she noticed me eying her bust.
      I bought a nice "faux wrap" dress on the internet from another country and when it came I found out it wasn't "faux" enough and that I even might have bought one size larger than necessary. But I liked the dress so I bought a new bra just for this dress, but I always feel self conscious because this bra doesn't offer as much support as any other bra I have. I have to sit straight all the time and I can't wear it to work (well, I can but it wouldn't feel right). I thought of wearing some kind of a scarf, but I'm not a scarf wearer, so I don't really know how. This looks like it might help me.

    With my most recent sewing project, I discovered that layering a tulle/mesh under a lightweight lace was a really fun method to add and create texture over fabrics, because it adds dimension and depth!

  • @trekadouble757
    @trekadouble757 5 ปีที่แล้ว +91

    I love that project a lot because this is actually a nice way to make a bust cover that isn't just sitting behind the dress with an awkward shape. It's cute, it looks like it's part of the dress, it's nicely done, it has volume and texture, just perfect.
    One thing though about the way you attached it. Attaching it to your bra, with pins like you did, or sewing it, is a great thing because then you can wear that bra with another dress who has the same problem, it makes it into a cute bra, and it also means your dress stays intact. I personally would sew it by hand with a running backstitch or a simple running stitch to the edge of the dress into the hem (to make it invisible), or I would attached it with safety pins, so that I have the cover attached to the dress, but not in a way that doesn't allow me to take it off easily in 5 minutes if I need to (for example to sell the dress, or to wear it with another coloured cover).

      I'm a little sorry that I didn't show the bra being pinned while I was wearing it (but I would have felt a little bit weird on camera in just a bra!), but the pinning I did while the bra was on the dress form is exactly the same as how I did it on myself. I just used straight pins, and sandwiched the pointy end between the bra and cover. I wore it for a whole evening of wedding activity including dancing, and did not get poked by the pins even once! the outer bottom corners were indeed just left loose, and I did not have any problems with them riding up. That said, your mileage might vary. Hope that helps!

    Thank you so much for posting this video! I'm not a plunging neckline kinda gal, and this is the perfect solution for when I'm thrifting lovely dresses that show a bit too much boobage

    Great thanks. A trick from my aunt years ago, was removing extra fabric that was on the interior back of the dresses (in the 90s) also the extra pocket fabric. But this is well done and stylish. I’m looking at dresses for a wedding and am looking for a fix thanks again

    Amazingly I have only just found you. I love clothes, fashion history and sewing, and since covid TH-cam. I really loved this short film. I just thought you might want to know my mother used to make very similar when she was young, in the 1930's she called them 'modesty vests'.(,some were trimmed with lace and held in place with poppers), I think it is a lovely ' cover all 'name. Many thanks for taking the time to do these films.

    I thought it was just me, bought a fabulous black and white wrap around and my entire chest is hanging out..I wanted to throw it away. Reconsidering doing exactly this now. What's the matter with these designers.

    This is 100% what I wanted. I have a dress that I actually love the neck line design but it's just a inch or two too low. I wanted a similar neck line but a little more coverage. Thank you so much for this video

  • @Elentarien

    Ahh. That's an interesting idea. Thank you. I HATE HATE HATE low necklines. I'm the type who would be quite happy if the high necks of history would return. . . .Yeah. Ok. Maybe not THAT high. lol We don't like to feel choked, either. But 'crew necks' are definitely my preferred go-to (this quite possibly is the result of living somewhere where winter lasts 6 months of the year. And I'm not one who likes a cold chest, thank you. Though, I also don't like turtle-necks, so yeah, I dunno), so putting on something fancier that suddenly takes a plunge. . .eh. . .no. I also have a problem that the usual 'tank top' or 'camisole' doesn't quite fit me either and usually ends up being also way-to-low on me for some reason. (Better if it has adjustable straps, but most of them don't) I've also used 'dickies' (that is the worst name ever) to slid inside the shirt, but yeah, the lower the neckline the less they stay in place. So i have started sewing in custom inserts to bring the neckline up.
    I love this idea of making the 'bust shape' neckline instead of always having to resort to the 'straight across' look. While your results are still a little low for my taste (yeah, I prefer NOTHING is showing. lol Any lower just feels so wrong to me. Not to mention usually cold.), I love the idea of being able to give it some shape. Maybe I'll start experimenting a bit more now. Thanks for the idea! Also, depending on the garment itself, its often not hard to just cut the insert down to size and actually sew it in place on the garment itself so that you don't have to pin it inside. But that depends on the lines and seams that already exist.

      I prefer crew necks at all times too. It just makes me more comfortable personally

    • @JessicaPandino
      @JessicaPandino 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also prefer higher necklines. Although I'm not a huge fan of crew because they often feel like they're choking me (though I don't feel that way with turtlenecks? 🤷🏻‍♀️)
      I would make hers a but higher as well but I think the shape still would work just fine. I'm short so more people can see down my shirt lol

    Smart idea! I've bought a few of those mock cami things (and sewn a couple based on what I had bought). They were shaped like oversized triangles and strapped to the bra straps, but on me (34DDD) they never sat quite right. I think they were meant for smaller busted women. Anyway, I love this idea!! I will make some the next time I run into this issue.

      Same size as you, bought the same cheap faux cami thingies, found them to look just cheap. The criss-cross form-fitting rectangles are a game changer!

    I am busty and my tip is that I sew down the plackets of the button down cardigans I wear so that they don't gape at the bust. It makes them pull on vs buttoned but they look neater.

    I love how this solution maintains the idea of a v neckline. I've dealt with a lot of camisoles etc over the years, and they always go straight across and kind of ruin the look that made one decide to buy the low-necked thing in the first place.

    I have a dress that's not quite as low cut as this. I've been thinking about finding a bit of lace to give me a little more coverage. I understand that it might affect the structure or pull on the dress though... I'll definitely have to try this out!

  • @JessicaPandino
    @JessicaPandino 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for this! It's really hard for me to find dresses that are flattering because of my short waist and wide hips. And the ones I do find tend to have low necklines. But wearing a camisole doesn't feel like it matches the formality of the dress, so I definitely want to try this!!
