What I took from this song
It's about a suicidal man. He is singing while falling to his death (I'm falling down through the sky) he is saying to his family "please don't cry" Because he doesn't want his family sad about his death. Saying he is about to break to pieces (die) and it's his calling to die. He's saying Broadway here I come because he's falling on Broadway Street. He's saying "will I become a hit or blend in with the Rest" He's wondering if he will be forgotten or be remembered. The last couple lines are his last words. "Broadway I am here" He's reached the end. He's dead. "I'll never find out"

Primrose T. That’s what the metaphor is. The song has a double meaning. Depending on how you listen to it it can change your experience.
Yup that’s the literal meaning of the song! First time I listened to it I took it at the metaphorical, it being about success and wanting to make it big etc., but ever since then I only think about the literal meaning. Maybe that’s just me, but I do prefer it. It’s heartbreaking but it’s so very relatable.

Actually even in smash that was always the intent of the song, It’s a double meaning, Katherine mcphees character in hit list is supposed to sing this while being depressed for not making it in broadway and she tries to jump of the building before Jeremy Jordan’s character in hit list comes and saves her while singing “the love I meant to say”

Mild Potatoes you should see it if you get the chance. You won’t regret it. I saw it today and met most of the cast (Stephanie and Tiffany didn’t come out for the stage door sadly) and George was the nicest person I ever met. I’m still freaking out and after I left the building I was crying a lil bit. The show was so good and the cast is amazing! Even the understudies for Brooke and rich I saw were great! I had fifth row and I was screaming at every character entrance

not a good choice
The music Joe Iconis writes seems so simple on the surface but deep down you can see so many more meanings and that’s what I love about it
The experience of listening to this depends on how you take the lyrics. If you take the entire thing as a metaphor for success [on broadway] it’s really awe inspiring. If you take it in it’s literal sense as someone committing suicide, it’s (for me at least) incredibly heartbreaking and real, especially the bridge and last line(s). As someone whose been there I relate to this song a hell of a lot.
