    I am so blessed and thankful I found this out before I start on Monday. I know it has helped with other cool hardy annuals. Thanks Jen.❤

    So glad you are putting out these videos. So helpful for first year micro flower farmers inundated with too many sources for info. Would you consider doing a list of everything you succession sow and how often? I'm an old gardener but never succession sowed. Thanks.

    I 1000% needed this video... so thanks so much! I would love to see what one single plant produces. I was needing help with spacing and could not find allot of ... how much to plant for a small crop area.

    Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been struggling with larkspur so much and this definitely helps. I've tried direct seeding, which wasn't my favorite. The I chilled my seeds in the fridge for a few weeks, planted them in trays and covered them with soil and put them out in my unheated greenhouse. Its the end of week 2 and I don't see anything (the temperature has also fluctuated a lot but the last 2-3 days have been 35 and below). I'm going to take them in to see if that helps! Is it also possible I planted them too deep? They are probably under 1/4 inch of soil.

    Hi....just wondering about the Larkspur and what you think about storing them planted in the freezer, I use those big salad containers. Thought I'd move them to the fridge after a week, then out to the little greenhouse.?

    Still can't germinate larkspur but I got bupleurum sorted. I store seed in the freezer .I sow them loosely wet well then put them in the fridge in a bag for a week or two. I set them near a cool east window on the floor with an upside down basket overtop. Then they pop in a week or so.
    Now if I could just learn larkspur

    Great video- you didn't mention if you moisten your cels before bringing your tray outdoors. The seed starting medium in your video looked dry. I have my packets in the fridge right now. In two weeks- they are are going outside for a snow bath! ;)

      I brought them inside after the snow I had placed on top of the melted. They were wet and I provided consistent moisture once I brought them inside

    At what temp do you grow on bupleurum? Also, at what size - or after how many weeks - do you plant it out?

  • @stephanieraphael8338
    @stephanieraphael8338 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    We had our larkspur seeds in the fridge for a couple weeks. Just seeded 72 cell trays. In VA outside temps high, so attempting to germinate in walk-in cooler. We get these patterns of warmer weather followed by colder thru March/April. And then it's like full on hot, humid summer all a sudden in May. Been saving seeds, will experiment with winter sowing next season. They come up in our herbaceous borders on their own, maybe I'm over thinking things.

      I tried to just throw them into a random spot, bc like you, I also have them pop-up in a certain spot each year religiously, but throwing them in just doesn’t seem to work. Too funny!

  • @NaturallyBrittany
    @NaturallyBrittany 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now when you bring them in, do you put them on heat mats? Or no? Would that help with germination?

    • @PepperHarrow
      @PepperHarrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don’t use heat mats for hardly anything. They like to be cool for germination, so I’d guess bottom heat would be too much.

      @@PepperHarrow good to know! Yeah after watching just now I ran down to my grow rack and pulled out this sad tray of white king delphinium that I’ve been trying to germinate since the 2nd. It’s my 2nd go at these seeds. 🙈 honestly I haven’t had anything fail to germinate like this, so as soon as I watched your video I instantly knew I’d missed the cold stratification step. So now they are outside with some snow kicked over top. 😆 I even planted more seed just incase the improper initial germination killed those other poor seeds I had in there at first. 😅 Thanks for your videos btw. You two are a lot of fun to watch and I love hearing your tips. 🥰

    Another question, I know Bupleurum likes it dark to germinate but do you keep larkspur in the dark also after you bring it in from the outside? Thanks!

    • @PepperHarrow
      @PepperHarrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did keep them on the bottom shelf out of direct light for a week, then moved them under the grow lights.

  • @mkwats5375

    Would you wet paper towel in the freezer if you are past the snow period in your area? Are these succession planted? Thanks so much!

    • @PepperHarrow
      @PepperHarrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can just put the seed packet in the freezer rather than wet paper towel. Then direct sow after a few weeks. We don’t succession larkspur but will do a couple bupleurum successions

    Trieing larkspur for the first time, i live in a Cool climate and the seed packet says these are easy with good germination-and to direct sow them, then a danish flowerfarmer said that she put the seeds in the freezer for 3 weeks- prior to sowing. (My larkspur seeds are currently doing time in the freezer! )Then You say fridge and then cold stratification😅, i am starting to fear larkspur the way i fear snapdragons, and giant verbena- i just cant figure them out! 😆😆😆

    I have never grown either of these. With Bupleurum, if you wanted to put a good size stem in a bouquet, how much can you harvest from one plant at one time? wait..maybe there's a better way to ask..Let's say you need to make 3 bouquets, how many bupleurum plants would you need to have to accomplish that? Would one plant provide enough for 3 bouquets? Or one plant per bouquet? And are they a once and done plant? or can you keep harvesting through cool weather months?

    • @PepperHarrow
      @PepperHarrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it’s too gorgeous fresh and can also be a lovely dried. The only thing I can’t bring myself to grow is castor bean.

    • @gr8gardn
      @gr8gardn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I grow castor bean but only for the landscape. I don't think it has any value as a cut flower. It reseeds so I have only planted once and that was 20 years ago. I love the Dr Seuss looking tropical trees. The beans are protected in seed pods covered with sharp spikes and are hard to remove even wearing gloves when the pod is dry. I have pets and kids around but none have shown an interest in the plants other than to glance at them. Adults love the look. They look great with Elephant ears and Tropicana cannas for a little bit of the tropics.
      Thanks for this excellent advice on Bupleurum and Larkspur!!! I made a "contact card" for each of them in my MS Outlook so I can find your advice quickly in the future
