David, Thank you for this video. I talked to you the other day about the bears eating the queen and larva from one of my hives. I decided that it’s way too late this far north in Michigan to try and add a queen, so I used the newspaper method and combined the queen less hive with one of my other hives.

Great video David I did that with a colony that had a laying worker in it I took them out and shook them out and the bees flew back to my other hives.

Thanks for the tips, Russborough HONEY is our family beekeeping name and we are going to try the paper merge trick. Had a hive that kept making queen cells and laying drones, we figured she must have been a failed queen. Hoping this works this evening when we try it out.

Thanks for the great demonstration. I have 2 weak single deep hives I would like to combine. The first colony is a little bit larger and is queenless. The workers created 3 queen supercedure cells. The second has only 2 or 3 frames of brood/food and a good queen. I would like to remove the supercedure cells and combine the hives for winter survival. I can’t slide the hives closer together because there are hives between them. Do you recommend caging the queen and combining into 1 box as you demonstrated or using the newspaper technique to stack the two boxes? What do I do since I can’t slowly slide the boxes closer together?

Thanks for this video David. Appreciate your insightful tips. I noticed one of my hives has a handful of bees with DWV, i am in second round of fogger OA while using Apivar strips. Will this colony make it you think? Or is it too late? 2 - 8 fr deeps, full of bees.

I have 8 frame deep with lots of resources and no queen. I cant find a new queen. Planning on getting a 5 frame medium nuc.
What's the best way to set the two?
I plan on moving 5 grams from nuc to a 8 frame super. Then putting 8 frame medium on the bottom and the 8 frame deep on the top.

I have a very large strong colony that may be queenless. I'll check it again next week to be sure. I also unexpectedly caught a small swarm last week in a swarm trap I had already pulled and left sitting around.
Will merging a (presumably) small swarm with a large (queenless) colony work this same way?
My alternative is to order a queen from you, but being around to receive and install her might be an issue right now.

Can you do a video on divider boards? I picked some up for my weak hives, so I can help them make it through winter. I haven't used them yet. What is your opinion on them?

Good morning Joe, I have a hive that is not going to make it through the winter. I want to take away that hive and allow the bees to go into another hive next to it. What are the chances that those bees will harm my laying queen in that hive?

I wanted to ask if with this method and with the newspaper method if the number of days you take to do it matters? Like one guy's video he mentions combining overnight with the newspaper. But in other videos people say it may take 3 or 4 days. This made me wonder if the success rate will differ with people managing it with a different # of days?
    Thanks.

I might add a method that has worked for me is to use a 1.5 inch double screen , queened rite box on bottom, double screen on top of them then queenless Colonie on top of double screen but facing opposite direction with restricted entrance ( something that makes them look around before flying out ) after 3 days take double screen out . To join boxes. I just never had much luck with the newspaper trick. lol. this has worked well for me. Double screen lets pharmones join, no fighing at all an no need to cage queen.

    • @namentatic4978

I do not know why he does not answer here.
I'll help you. One side of that cage has a hole and it is plugged up with "sweet cake." Bees will take pheromone from that queen, and remove that plug in couple of days. This way she will be released and introduced to the colony.

G’day David can you give me some advice please,New bee keeper this week, can you give me an idea on the time frame of a large swarm a buddy and I have collected and and put in an eight frame with full foundation sheets, how long would I expect the box to fill out before I would put a super on it,it’s just turned spring here in Australia 🇦🇺 any help is appreciated cheers.

    • @paulchristu996

Harry Weyer Dave’s a busy guy, so I’ll pitch in til he does. If there’s a lot of nectar available, or if you’re feeding syrup as you should anyway, they should already be building comb. Soon as there’s some comb to lay in, Queenie will commence. Then it’ll be about 3 weeks before first new bees hatch. It’s only at that time that the colony will increase in size. So, maybe a month from now you’ll be looking at adding another box. Wait til first box is fully drawn before adding the second. Pull a frame with some uncapped brood from the lower box, center it in the upper. Nurse bees will follow, and comb drawing in the upper box will take off. Keep us posted; a long dreary winter is starting for most of us, so some “sunny” news will be welcome.

Paul Christu well Paul I went into the hive and sure enough they had filled out the brood box and were 3/4 finished filling out the lid with honey that was Monday just gone so I put a super and excluder on it but didn’t transfer a frame of brood like you mentioned but I’ll check the box next week and may transfer a frame then, take care.

If the one hive is queenless wouldn’t the queenless bees accept her right away?

    • @paulbunyan1682

larry tornetta Not necessarily, that is what David shows in this video. You either combine the hives slowly or cage the queen and combine them quickly.
