      @@awindwaker4130 Its only going to get harder and harder, population is growing and companies want experienced workers, so what happens when an employer is to decide between a single 40 year old man that has work experience with multiple 20 year olds that has no work experience. Soon you'll be seeing applicants for a single position of six digits if nothing is done about employment in maybe 30 years time.

    Here's the problem: Everyone has their own opinion on resumes. There is no such thing as a "resume expert." Basically there are just employers. I've been told so many conflicting things over the years that I just ignore everyone and create a format that works best for my experiences.

      Same, but for example as developer I use the format she used as well. Actually a recruiter redid my entire resume for free and I believe it has helped me get a job.

    The older I get the more I loathe writing and sending out résumés. I feel like they are a lot like online dating profiles; just a bunch of hyperbole and self aggrandizement that create unrealistic and unachievable expectations.

      NeonVoxel I have to disagree with you. Especially when you are looking for a high management position (VP, Head of a Branch, Exec), connections become the name of the game. I personally know more than 5 people, who have landed 350k+ jobs from their connections (as well as hard work).

    As a vocational manager I can tell you this: Your objective when applying online is to get your resume past the screening software of the employer. Try to put as many keywords from the job description into your resume and create a different resume for every job you apply for. Do not use borders or a lot of fancy fonts on your resume because the screening software might not be able to read your resume at all. Remember, your objective is to get your resume past the screening software.

      @@Worldculturesandthepeople I would advise sending it as a Word document. Screening software might have trouble reading it as a pdf. You'll want to create a different resume for every job you apply for anyway.

      @@jbw53191 The problem with that is that the formatting of the document might not be preserved properly when you send it due to difference in resolution and what not, so I thought that converting your CV to a pdf preserves that formatting and ensures that the end-product is exactly the way you intended it to look no matter what.

    I don't know why is it so many hates on her. she is actually giving a pretty good points in this video. remember people don't have so many time to read every single word in ur resume. Its ur job to grab their attention to read more about ur resume. They get hundreds or resume, how is that possible for people to read everything in detail and expect them to remember u.

    As a professional Recruiter, I agree with everything except for the paragraphs for each job. I only scan for key words in paragraphs but I read every bullet.

    From my experience, a resume filled with action verbs and impactful/outcome based bullet points is enough to impress employers. At the end of the day, what works for you is best!

      Maybe you forgot what she said at the beginning. She said it's not also about the look but also the contents. Recruiters do read resumes, especially the ones that are well made.

    I once quoted Duke Nukem in an Objectives statement. The manager laughed so hard and hired me without even reading the rest.
    In the end, I broke my arm the next day while dirtbiking and couldn't start new job for 6 weeks. When I started, that manager had been laid off. I still had the job, though.
    Objective: "To go where I please, and please where I go"

    I have to admit I never read the "professional summary" when I am recruiting as they are all pretty much identical. Everyone can work on their own and as part of a team. They are always self motivated and can take direction.

    The one-page resume is the standard now. Recruiters spend an average of 6 seconds looking at a resume. They aren’t going to flip the page. The exception is technical people and academic researchers’ CVs that are longer and fundamentally a different thing.

    I found this helped me if I paused at the time stamps to examine both the format and the content as an example for a resume:
    0:09 to 0:13 for overall look to help recruiters scan through the resume for information they need to determine if they will short-list you for an interview,
    0:15 to 0:35 for how to use top third of page,
    1:07 to 1:00 for core competencies, and
    1:26 to 1:38 for outlining professional experience.

    As someone that read resumes for years, while this stuff may be great for extremely high level positions, the average person doesn't need all of this. There's nothing wrong with a basic resume/CV format. It's what we're used to seeing, so we know what to look for and where. There is nothing wrong with a classic, run of the mill resume, for your basic job.

    This was made 5 years ago and most of her statements are still being used today. I know that some doesn't agree with what she'd told but most of these are just basics of the basics. We are free to add our uniqueness in our resume and that's okay. One of the points that our previous principal in my previous school and some professionals that I've talked personally all agrees that if they're not interested reading the papers in the first 30 seconds, their out. So the snapshot thing is basically true and relevant.

    There’s no such thing as a perfect resume. Every resume is different. As long as you have all relevant information pertinent to the position that you’re applying for in good resume format then you’re good.

    Thank you. Short video and packed with useful information. I look at a lot of resumes and Amanda is right. I rarely read a resume top to bottom unless I see something intriguing at the top of the first page. Highlighted words and bullets help. There may not be a perfect resume but if you do what Amanda is saying, you'll get past my desk :-)

      The worst is when they actually read it, and when they ask you back for additional information, it becomes clear they don't know enough about the industry to truly evaluate candidates, because they are hired recruiters and not workers.
      Like asking explanations for usage of apps or the meaning of keywords that everyone in the industry employs daily.

    Connections are more important than resumes. Get to know someone in the field and ask them to help. Once you get started and keep making connections it's all up from there.

    I had resume written by TopResume which pretty much looked like what she mentions. I'm yet to land a single interview with that resume after a year and half.

    Amazing how I've never once looked at anything on TH-cam about jobs but I sent a resume via indeed not an hour ago and get a suggested video about resumes on TH-cam. Reminds me of talking to my daughter about coupons for American eagle as we walked through the mall and my suggested ad on Facebook was American eagle deals when I checked on a notification a few minutes later.

      Yeah, pretty much always. I check the ingredients of shampoos, nutrition profile of the eatables, brands of the cloth I'm purchasing etc.
      The thing is if you care about your body then you'd never pick anything before reading the packaging, just like you analyse employee before hiring since you care about your company.

    Every piece of "valuable" or "invaluable" information is still INFORMATION. There is some intrinsic value to each statement. Employers that can see superficially or deeper into statements can often pick the best candidates.

    Honestly I think a lot of employers end up missing out on the some of the best candidates because they don’t make it through the online shortlisting process where perhaps their application did not have the keywords that the computer has been designed to look for.

      Also, due to the best candidates being in average humbler than the mediocre ones.
      Like for example, I know a guy exceptionally good at English (he seems a native speaker, and published a few books in English), that in his resume he wrote his English level at "medium-advanced level"

    These are great recommendations. The problem is that people don't look at resumes anymore. They are scanned by software. So yeah, just make sure everything that is in the job description is in your resume somehow. The keywords. Make it pass the first stage.

      Alexis C. Meet people. Volunteer. Do crap jobs to get some experience. Don't count on anything actually leading to a job other than knowing the right people and being very talented, though.
      Mostly meet people. Also, understand that in many places, unless you're in the right industry there's going to be no way to get experience without networking. By the time jobs are available for you to look at, they'll want someone who has experience.

      Honestly if your parents don't have any connections (I got my first job at 16 through a family friend that often did work with a family that owned three supermarket's, so I was basically guranteed the job) then I'd say try and be on the lookout for places in your area that are just opening up. For my second job I work at a burger place that had just opened up but there were plenty of high schoolers that were hired because they had the right attitude and it was their first job.

      Try and apply for companies that like “younger” workers, for example i worked in a shoe shop and it was mostly young managers in their 20s, those sorts of places will usually hire younger people and understand that younger people wont have the experience

    Not sure what’s with all the griping and nay-sayers on here....I loved this video. Short, sweet, and had some helpful tips for organizing a resume. I liked the idea of using a few sentences to describe your role, and bullet points for results/accomplishments. I just had to update my resume for a job and given that it would be a promotion from my current position I needed to highlight not just what I do but what I’ve done. This format worked really well. :)

    Years ago everyone said to put an intro into your resume, who you are and what kind of job you're seeking. Once I changed to a summary of the type of person I am and skills I started getting calls. Don't waste space telling someone want a job as they already get that from you applying.

    I am a Financial Recruiter with many years experience. The Person/Skills/Progression are what gets the job, not the resume itself. But this video is fine as far as formatting. People who charge for this stuff are often ripping folks off, unless it is for an extremely technical role you don't need a resume writer.

      Correct. First of all, 3 years isnt that much in the professional world. You should have no problem fitting that and your education on one sheet. Unless youve gone through a ton of different employers in those 3 years which also doesnt look good. And once you get a certain number of years experience (5-10+) your education becomes less important and can be briefly summarized at the bottom. Also you dont include references on a resume. Only provide references separately upon request. Hope that helps.

    This represents the problem with employers today. They don't care as much about the applicant. I got recommended for a 140k starting salary job before I was even out of college all because I networked correctly. Let's see more videos on financial freedom, cooperation and functional approach to applying for a job. Even though learning how to build a resume is great.. Employers are going to have a hard time finding employees willing to put up with disagreeable people who want things their way.

    Objective is everything! This is advice for a middle school student. I have never hired an employee that does not demonstrate a clear actionable goal. Also the example provided here has too much going on. If I can't obtain who you are, what you want, and why you're qualified in a 10sec skim. I move on to the next applicant.

    Pathetic how much attention and time recruiters demand workers spend on a paper barely seen for 15 seconds or less on the day of your interview. It's very much a gesture of feudal submission and obsequious courtship, even if a lot of modern workers would rather not liken it as such in order to feel better about the sycophancy of the whole job-seeker's ritual. Boy do HR and recruiters - appointed judges of workers and jobs they themselves have never performed - enjoy the power trip with these shameless demands for detail to a paper quickly discarded at the first opportunity to fill the position via a nepotistic "network" or family/friend.

You need headers telling the system exactly what you’re going to outline below, then the title of the job, the company name, and then exactly what you did. It needs your education, software competencies/areas of expertise, any awards or certifications, any relevant publications and that’s it. The recruiter needs to be able to see in the first 5 seconds where you went to school, and what your last job was.

    everyone is talking about how connections are really important. i'm not from america but i'm quite intimidated by this because my family is quite poor and we have absolutely no connections. are connections really THAT important??
    i mean, afterall, my country has a way higher employment rate than america but i'm still worried

      jinyoung's swallowed water A lot of these comments are kind of dumb to be honest haha, so don't have a heart attack after reading them.
      Connections can definitely help, but only if they go so far. For example, I want to go into the bio field; unless I know someone already doing something medical/biological, I have to prove myself in a resume. Don't worry, connections definitely aren't required, and you can still make many connections even if you don't have any direct family ones (like at job fairs or internships.) Showing that you can take initiative and will fight to get important people in your field to recognize you are some of these best traits :)

      Connections, which you usually get by networking (a skill that can be hard to learn), are important, but the level of importance is subjective. If you want to be a part of the entertainment industry, especially if you want to be an A-lister, networking is top priority, and just below that is probably getting your hands on every gig you can. I live in Canada and I've heard many entertainers, comedians, actors, and the like complain because the States gulfs their ability to make an impact. In situations like those, connections can be even more necessary.
      But if you want a quieter job, or a career where you don't need to climb a corporate ladder, networking is a benefit but not a necessity. I currently have about zero connections to anything, but I also know that it takes time.
      The connections thing is usually played up to offset the importance of a resume too, because sometimes you can get "in" just by knowing the right people, but honestly it's usually a mixed bag situation.

      It must depend on the field because I've never had a hard time getting a job and I've never had a connection any where I got one. my skill set is obvious. Either you have it or you don't. No b.s.-ing. Maybe other kinds of jobs are different. If you have compitance and work ethic you should be fine.

    That's the problem, unless you are part of the top tear of workers, that 5 percent of programmers, that 5 percent of marketers etc, you need to avoid recruiters - try to reach the actual hiring authorities. If the business only goes through recruiters - you are just out of luck. You ain't getting in through these gate keepers. Unless, as I stated - you didn't need the recruiters in the first place.

    When sending to individuals , resume can be in pdf file as that would ensure content integrity.
    When uploading on job sites , it can be in word document , for the programs run by the recruiters to be able to detect the same properly.
