    CORRECTION: Mick says Orange Music started in Charing Cross Road, London in the late 1960s.
    It actually began in New Compton St in 1968 - Happy 50th Anniversary to Cliff Cooper and everyone at Orange!
    In this video we plug in the Orange OR15 for the first time to see what we can learn. Dan has very limited experience of Orange amps; I have a little more - Mick here - but we’re essentially starting from scratch.
    Even if you don’t have an OR15 there are some goodly amp basics in this video, for example the relationship between gain, master and headroom at 7:44 and delays used in the front or in the loop at 15:02. Full timings below…
    Apart from all that, we use a selection of common gain types and a new pedal or two to get some tones going. We hope this kind of approach will encourage you to try stuff and raise some questions that will help you with this specific amp and indeed others that might share common features.
    Now, we managed to avoid the 7-watt mode entirely. It wasn’t exactly intentional, although may be influenced by the fact that we tend not to use low power modes in any amps. Which doesn’t mean it doesn’t sound good - apologies for the omission. In 7-watt mode you simply get less headroom and more power amp overdrive at lower levels. It’s still plenty loud!
    Please enjoy the video…

    19 minutes in when you guys were comparing Delay in front or in the loop. “Give her some love in the front end “ then mick turns up the preamp gain. OMG what a badass glorious sound that was. Great playing mick. It’s so obvious to me when you like a sound you immediately break into some sick blues lick.. great show guys

    Before we moved, I used an amp switcher to go through my amps and cabs in my studio for recording. I would love flipping through my Mesa Boogie dual rectifier, my Hughes and kettner tm36, my krabk rev series 1 original, and my peavey 6505+, as well as my or15.
    But something’s changed this year. And last year as well. So last year I rebuilt my entire pedalboard. I used to use a pedalboard as an addition to my amp. So noise gate, overdrive, delay, chorus. That way any time I switched amps I had a board for my distorted or clean tones. But I started watching shows like this and jhs pedal show, and I wanted to experiment with getting all my tone from pedals. I rebuilt my entire board with some crazy cool gain stages. I noticed my orange or15 was my cleanest amp, very robust and thick midrange. It took pedals so well. That was last year. This year? We moved to a two bedroom and all my amps are in the closet. Except for the or15, which is run clean with a little bit of gain and runs all my 17 pedals.
    For gain, I start with the mxr Timmy which is always on. That goes into my mxr phase 90 for fun, and the gain continues with my animals fishing is as fun as fuzz which is a Soviet big muff. Then a nux fet boost (amazing pedal please buy one it’s only $35), which pushes my fuzz into crazy places. But then there’s a screaming blues set up as a deep distortion, and then a blues driver as a creamy overdrive. Then there’s a Wawa ds1 as either full rhythm distortion or a lead, all depends. Also a big muff nano. All of those gain pedals sound so good and clean with zero noise on my or15. Not to mention all the reverb and delays with zero effects loop. I just went straight in, honestly this has changed my playing and my writing. All because I chose the or15 as my amp. I said “no matter what I build this amp will be my foundation.” Solid.

      That would in deed be priceless. Holy Mountain live, hehe. Pedal talk wouldn't be too extensive though, I think. Still it would be interesting to hear TPS' opinion on the whole thing which seems to me a lot closer to their preferred blues based sound than other heavy or metal genres. Maybe even dive into the heavy psych with earthless etc.

    Mick, here's a display of sad geekiness for you. When you played that clip from the "Coupe" single it sounded very familiar, so I played it over a few times and it came to me. It was very similar to the demo of the Fender Telebration you did for Guitarist in 2012. I learned that sequence and used to play it as a warmer upper!

    If you're going to have Rabea on again might I suggest having him demonstrate how he uses fuzz with his high gain sounds. Cause some of the fuzz tones he gets are obscene, over the top, too much, and f'n glorious.

    As a player of an OR15 I really enjoyed this episode. You highlighted all the the issues I’ve found with the amp over the years that I’ve had it. It’s a shame I can’t put a picture up of my settings but I had to roll off the preamp gain. The fizz was too much for my ears! I’m now pushing the output more to the edge of breakup and because I have an OX I’m not going deaf. I also decided to run the Wampler Dual Fusion as my overdrive. I’m able to play much more with the dynamics of the guitar to get the tone I want.
    At the end of the day I don’t think this amp will be a keeper for me. But I’ve had it 3 years and it’s only now I’m getting the best out of it. I’ve learnt to be persistent in getting good tone!

    I regret selling this amp, but super glad I got a good deal on a used Orange Ad30. I love the mid range focus of many Orange amps and how warm they sound. Orange really pokes through a mix without being spikey or harsh sounding. I also think of more humbucker tones than single coil tones with Orange.

    All I know from Orange is my Rockerverb50. I love the clean channel cranked! With humbuckers, it starts to crack and compress at around 3/10. These days, for most overdrive needs, I use my Kingsley Harlot in the clean channel. Only bringing in the overdrive channel of the amp for 80's distortion type rhythms and leads.

  • @justinnycity

    Thanks for the shows, you guys are great! I see the DB meter was set for C weighting. That's generally used for measuring machinery (like power tools) where it is flat across the full frequency spectrum which will result in a higher DB reading. "A" weighting is more tuned to what the human ear hears and it's generally what we sound engineer's use for PA system sound measurements etc.... The DB measurements in the room may sound more accurate to what you're hearing if you switch it from C to A.
    Technically speaking: The "A" weighted sound level discriminates against low frequencies, in a manner similar to the response of the ear. In this setting, the meter primarily measures in the 500 to 10,000 Hz range. It is the weighting scale most commonly used for OSHA and DEQ regulatory measurements.
    The "C" weighted sound level does not discriminate against low frequencies and measures uniformly over the frequency range of 30 to 10,000 Hz. This weighting scale is useful for monitoring sources such as engines, explosions, and machinery. The sound levels measured with these two weightings have units of "dBA" and "dBC", respectively.

    Never owned one but always kinda wanted one, ever since watching Kossoff get some glorious tones out of one. Back in the mid 90's I watched The Hoax dozens of times and remember Jesse favouring them, might have even been before he got more into the Fender amps. Anyhow, kids up to bed and just pouring myself a beer with this episode due to play in less than two minutes...

    Another great show guys, even if it was late Friday, end of the week tired with too much pizza and wine. By the way beer goes with pizza not wine LOL. I am looking forward to seeing your show from your new location. You have made mention of the TPS Band on several occasions and I am hoping to see guitar/amp/pedal combinations presented in the context of a full band. So many times we work up what we think is a great sound and take it to band rehearsal and find that it doesn't work with the rest of the band playing. Maybe some shows with the full band demonstrating this concept. Once again great show, thanks.

    What I got from this video is that I should never ever get rid of my OCD. The thought entered my mind a few weeks back and lingered.... but my God does it sound great! The OR15 was ok, just not the sound I’m after. I’ve been happy with the Dr. Z Z-28 1x10 with gold for over 6 years now. Great grab and go brown style 2x6V6 style amp. Loved this episode. Got to learn some more about an amp company I’m unfamiliar with.

    Quite right on using the G 12 H30. Tim Sult of Clutch uses (or used) that combination with a P90 pick up to make the first album. Which is essential for any orangeheaded user of Orange heads.

    The OCD into the Orange was the tone of the day. Mick was on one, though, playing a bit of "Time Out", mentioning Doom Metal, and also shouting out Del Amitri. Thoroughly enjoyable.

    Hi guys! Did you notice that with pedals on this Orange all the tone/eq knobs were almost always set near the lowest or highest setting? Dan mentioned it when he was trying to get a Klone sound from the Melody. In my experience normally the tone knobs are set near the middle, so I found it interesting and worth mentioning! Cheers, TPS is my fav show.

    Always cool to see different amps on the show. You mentioned maybe doing Blackstar in the future. It would also be super cool to see a Hiwatt (or Hiwatt type amp) if you could get your hands on one. Love the old Page/Gilmour tones and have never had the chance to play one. Anyway, always dig the show. Thanks for all you guys do. I've learned so much watching. Cheers!

    I’ve tried a few things with my OR15. 1.Clean pedal platform with a Timmy, surprisingly good. 2. Setting the amp gain around 11:00 for crunch and riding the volume knob. It can get a bit ratty, but when it’s dialed in, it rawks

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The ratty/rawk thing is what gets you heard in a band. Orange does that so well. :0)

      @Seriouslycantplayguitar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have a Micro Dark and can confirm it behaves like this exactly. I'm thinking of swapping tubes in the preamp to see if I can get breakup a little further up the gain knob so I don't have to ride the volume quite so much and get a little more room for pedals. Thinking a vintage 12au7 or 5751. Hopefully it tames it a little bit.

    The best part about this video is watching you guys find a good tone in an amp. It’s reassuring to see you find bad tones but then stick with it and find the good tones. I’m learning a lot here. Usually, if I plug into an amp and it’s too overdriven or I don’t like the tone immediately I decide it’s a bad amp... I’m reevaluating that.

    • @justinneafsey5990
      @justinneafsey5990 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Murray Williams yeah man most amps are more versatile than you think. Its rare you plug into an amp and it sounds amazing right away unless someone else messed with it before you. Anyways i always spend some time with an amp before deciding thumbs up or down. But im with you i learn alot from this show. Love it.

    • @MurrayWilliams
      @MurrayWilliams 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, it seems pretty obvious now ... I’ve always been a pedal guy so a way overdriven amp sent me running. But even in an amp that wants to drive immediately there’s useable tone for us pedal heads.

    Please get Matt Pike, it'd be one of the best episodes ever!
    He runs 2 different pedalboards into 2 orange amps with a a third one running dry. The guy is an absolutely genius tone sculptor and if he clicks on the right pedal your mind might just be blown...
    back in the 90s when SLEEP made dopesmoker, it took a while for the public to catch on but as time went on people began to realise that this slow, grinding and repetitive fuzzed out metal - influenced record has an undeniable ability to draw its listeners into hypnagogic states where one may be able to see inside the workings of their inner psyche...
    You see, Matt Pike uses these orange amps and fuzz boxes to help us see the light and embrace the spiritual side of all music, add a new layer of depth to our artistry and hopefully someone somewhere might find god in one of your songs. Music is a religion after all, at least it is mine. Nobody gets killed, everyone's fulfilled and good times are had 😝😝😝😝

    Guys, maybe a silly idea but what I would really like to see is a show where you take a solid state amp, a Roland BluesCube for instance and put a tube pre-amp ( a Kingsley perhaps?) in front of it or in the effects loop. People at Synergy amps claim that if you stick one of their modules in the effects loop it would greatly enhance the tone of a bluescube. Thanks!
    PS: can't wait to see the first show in your new "home"

    Well done, lads. Doing anything while you're in a food coma is not easy and trying to fondle headroom from a 15w amp is hard enough in the best of times let alone when you're pizza/wine combination is fomenting and moving you ever closer to feeling like a solid-state amp with a non-buffered FX loop. Way to power through and give us a nice review, Dan...nice to know you're willing to fall on the grenade for our entertainment pleasure...or at least fall on the pizza as it were. ;)

      Solid state. Loops..... probably never going to really make us happy. Super Reverb, Marshall Plexi, Vox AC30, Deluxe, Princeton etc etc. That’s where guitar sound came from. It’s never been bettered. Maybe refined, but that’s where it is for me. Mick here. :0)

    Love the Demo of the OR15. It's got some great rock tones - thinking it would be better matched with the Vintage 30 speaker which might better match the top end harmonics from this amp. Finding some love for these lower wattage amps. I just picked up a Marshall Mini Jubilee - really loving the variety of tone, sensitivity and articulation. Play it with my ShawBucker Strat and love the tones from all three pickups in all 5 positions. Really suprised how great it sounds clean and how well it takes pedals. My Deluxe Reverb might be in trouble :).

      Well, considering that Orange matches their amps w/V30s, you'd be right. Their cabs and combos usually ship loaded w/ V30s. I run a Tiny Terror through both a 4x12 straight w/ 25w Greenbacks and a 1x12 with a V30 - both are fantastic with humbuckers, especially for a head you can find in like-new condition for $300 all over the place.

    The reason I ask is that I like the sound of a Morgan amp that does not have effects lop, but when I watch the one video where you used the maiden and the Paige through the loop made me reconsider getting a Morgan and look at the Two Rock. Some say that the amp doesn’t sound as good with effects loops as a single Chanel amp without effects loops. Can you guys give your opinion on this. It can help me make a decision on amps. I like the Dumble tone. But that is just my opinion.
