To expand on the temperature thing, that's by design for Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 parts, the boost algorithms are tuned to thermal boosting, the chips will target 95c regardless of what cooling you use.

I'm absolutely amazed that an 8C/16T CPU at 5.1GHz is even staying below 80C to be honest. That's a bonkers amount of power shoved into such a tiny chip, with such a dinky cooler too. Amazing performance for its power usage.
In fairness that cooler has multiple heat pipes and isn't as small as it looks, it's probably got more surface area for dissipating heat than the tower cooler I have keeping my 12700f well under 65c while gaming and that thing eats up around 160W when it gets pushed.
@@bdhale34 As someone else has pointed out, these chips target 95c, if you aren't hitting 95c, you aren't leaving any performance on the table for it. That is assuming that you have PBO turned on.

Wow, I have been eyeing this board for a while now. It reminds me of the aliexpress erying motherboards but AMD instead of intel. I am tempted to wait for the Ryzen 9 variant just for the additional cores. I would love to do a build with this and a 4070 (when its cheap) for an energy efficient build. However I still would have to do research on these types of boards and weigh some pro's and cons, because I don't want to regret it later down the road.

Surely for this amount of money(540 and that is discounted from 700) in the uk at the moment is just better to build normal mini-itx system and just limit how much power your Cpu uses no? A decent b650 mobo and ryzen9 7900x will set you up around the same amount of money and you'll most likely have better performance.

I gotta say, its not optimal, but that is one cute motherboard. That huge CPU heatsink and a big fan on such a small motherboard is a sight to behold. Been a while since i saw fans mounted directly on top of a CPU. Also about RDR 2 in first person, its absolutely phenomenal, i played it solely it in first person except when im riding on horses or checking out my wardrobe, such a gritty experience. Its honestly one of the best FPS experiences ive had in a long time and especially in modern games next to RE 7, Village and Alien Isolation. I was blown away by it and im SO GLAD Rockstar added it in the game so i didnt have to use mods to get it in like GTA 4. It flows well, mouselook is great. Anyway, as usual, a great video, love the outlook of overlooked or underspecced stuff.
I know it would be a really niche product but I wish the 7745HX or similar chip supported ECC RAM. I would love a compact board like that with ECC support and a 10Gig ethernet NIC onboard with 1 full 16x PCIe slot for a HBA. That would make an awesome compact NAS or server with enough expandability to power a home lab.

Or it would be if the motherboard had any SATA ports for traditional 2.5in HDD and ODDs. Your only solution for a multimedia station is to use the PCIe slot with a SATA splitter, and rely purely on integrated graphics. This shouldn't be a problem if you're using it for multimedia and not gaming.
It's scary how close it is to something like a 5800x despite being a (one generation newer) laptop APU; slightly slower at stock but faster with a good OC. I'm seeing some definite potential for a living room gaming/media build!

I would love to see this board with a 7840HS because of the 780M. As the 780M is capable of "real" gaming at 1080p you wouldnt need a discrete GPU and could use the PCIe slot for something else (like putting in an Intel NUC ^^).
Personally I would aim for one of the "Engineers Specials" on Aliexpress with a i9 or i7 permanently welded to a DDR5 motherboard, not sff but a last gen i9 is going to kick the ooshies out of much on the market pretty much.
I remember my friend who has an Alienware with a 7745HX CPU I had him perform some benchmarks and it actually isn't too far off from a desktop 7700, if not on the mark. Which is impressive, since the 7700 and 7700x can compete or exceed in terms of raw performance vs something like a stock 5900x A small chip with a ton of punch behind it
that's because the 7745 is a 7700x delidded and relatively underpowered. same goes for the 7945, it's a 7950x. problem is, how much of a performance unleash will the almost double TDP give when compared to the laptop counterpart? if set to auto tdp in bios, the 7745 boosts to 120w, basically the same power use of a 7700x. problem is, being a mobile cpu, the VRM on the mb and the software behind it must be top notch, otherwise you're gonna run into trouble with games not properly optimized. let's see how this plays out, if minisforum is able to make an actually good bios for once, it could be the go to for most SFF builds.
Is there an option to disable the onboard Graphics in the BIOS when you have a discrete card on as I've read that lowers temps in other Ryzens 7s with onboard graphics? Would be worth a check and an update one way or the other.
For $400 it's actually objectively worth it's price. Plus finding an ITX board with good VRMs right now is hard, just because socket sizes are so big now, so using a mobile APU actually makes sense.
Now that single slot RTX 4060 or RTX 4060Ti graphics cards exist (thanks Galax for the later), I would comfortably paired those with this CPU motherboard.
I'll wait for the BD790i with the Ryzer9 7945hx and iGPU 780um.. I don't like their BIOS, it really sux. Soon aGPUs will be available on an M.2 interface .. I still like laptops better.
I will say, I ordered one and it came DOA. The fan would spun up when the ATX power was connected without jumping the start pins so I sent it back, credit to Minisforum got a full refund no questions asked.
With *32 MB of L3 cache* , sort of surprised that everyone is not praising the L3 ❤ For productivity, BD770i and/or 7745HX cpu might be nicely performant 👍 Kindest regards, friends and neighbors.
At one end, I am also of the mind that i expected better thermals from a notebook Ryzen cpu, especially with the mass of that big cooler (unless the cpu is actually under the small one). Granted, i also expect notebook makers to still fail it by putting crappier cooling still.
I just found this today from another channel. the 8 core is not available naymore, but the 16 core is also steal. The package is slightly cheaper to buy than a 7950x CPU and we know how much AM5 boards are. The board might not have Rebar support but I don't plan to buy high end GPUs. I just need high core count for browsing and Handbrake encoding
Im super interested in the Minisforum BD790i. Having a 16 core 32 thread cpu in such a small package is crazy. And it costs a little less than a ryzen 9 7950x by itself and this unit includes a MOBO.
@sc9433 Obviously. But from what I understand, CPUs generally last longer than mobos. So the mobo is more likely to fail first. In this case, imo if you already have to buy a new mobo, you may as well buy it on a new platform if available and get a new CPU with it anyway. But in either case I'm sure this has some kind of warranty, and I rarely ever hear about CPUs or Mobos failing unless they are super budget poorly made motherboards. Especially ones set up as an all in one unit like this one should be fine.
From what I've read, the hardware is good. The software/BIOS support is not. BIOS updates aren't regular, this needs to be brought up in the video which is a big miss.
honestly if this was like 150-250 bux it would be a hit. when he said almost 400 pounds me knowing thats more than usd these days i pretty much didnt care anymore. i could pick a mobo cpu for less. yes it may not be as small of a form factor. but it would also be a more powerful processor. i build computers so im crafty when it comes to selecting items. i also have always built big on mine for cooling and didnt care about small form. but always wanted a small frag box to take with me places. and have had a pipe dream of that for decades. nowadays you can buy a handheld system with a quad or 6/8 core processor that is weaker but it has everything all in one with a 7 inch hd screen for under 200 usd. im literally between do i build a frag box or do i get the handheld. handheld wins. the frag box comes later.

It is very unwise to buy this if you are not gonna pair it with discrete gpu, for igpu only small pc get something that has the radeon 680M/780M on board!
I was looking at one of these to bulld in a hyte revolt 3 case. It needs to be 100 bucks less in my opinion. You can buy 7600x and cheap am5 itx mother board cheaper than this and the desktop cpu will out do it. Not to mention you have to use less powerful laptop ram and it costs more.
Hello, I was looking at the installation video on Minisforum website and it looks like you have the cpu fan installed backwards. It looks like air should be pulled away from the heatsink rather blown on it. The thumbnail for their video has it installed the way you have it, but in the actual video they have it reversed. I'm not an expert, just sharing what I saw on their website. Cheers!!
I would very much like to see what GPU the igpu is comparable to as well as a comparison for the cpu. I am actually thinking about this board, because it doesn't seem like a bad deal.
Not a great showing from the integrated graphics tbh, at this point a microwave could run things like GTA5 and most E-Sports titles, this is a let down as this would be the main draw for something like this imho.
Did you check the PCIe Slot? My Board seems only to deliver PCIe 1.0/1.1... checked with CPU-Z, GPU-Z and HWiNFO64... idle or full load... it always just shows PCIe 1.0/1.1 x16... GPU used is an Inno3d RTX 4070 Ti X3 OC.
Well, verified the "seems" to "uses" in the meantime... Made an Aida64 GPGPU Benchmark Run in the Meantime which shows 3188Mb/s Memory Read and 3218Mb/s Write... which is MUCH to low for an RTX 4070 Ti... -.- Seems they have a "little" Bug in their UEFI Bios...

Still, given how efficient 7945HX can be, I still have my hopes up about its performance (managed to get my 7945HX all the way to 37642 cb in R23 with 122W due to 108A EDC)
one thing i am always curious about with these laptop cpus and mobos is if there is support for overclocking/ undervolting. you could certainly ease your temp troubles by setting up some parameters while keeping your clock speed high

yes, it all depends on the price. the normal asking price is too steep as you can just buy any itx board with a desktop cpu that fit your performance/budget needs and come out even cheaper. power draw can be made identical. if they are on sale however it can be quite a nice package.
Over here in the US, for the same price as this board chip and cooler you can get a 7600X with a board and cooler and a GPU equivalent (Probably much better in fact). The 7600X is about 25% faster in games overall as the 7745HX is a mobile part. And you get full size RAM with the 7600X option which always has lower latency than it's laptop brethren for less money. This does not in any way represent value for money. It is a neat little piece of kit though and if it were about half its price it would be worth it as a starter PC. As is it would make an AWESOME HTPC that could really game. For this to be worth its price it should have a case and PSU.
7745hx on laptop is different than this 7745hx. This one can effectively boost to 120w due to better heat dissipation, compared to laptop counterpart that only draws half the wattage. This model here is neck and neck with 7700. and its impposible to find a Mini-Itx Board at such a price with PCIE 5. If you want to build a small form factor mini-itx that you can carry around with a portable monitor setup, this is the cheapest it can ever get.
@@sc9433 The 7745HX is the 7745HX and I didn't base ANYTHING on this video. It is actually slower in EVERYTHING than the 7500f, let alone the 7600X or vanilla 7700. That is because it's a mobile processor designed to be a mobile processor. I understand your contention with cooling but in this case it does not make it faster than the 7500f let alone the 7700. Based on the price you CAN get an mITX AM5 board. I priced it out before I posted. Again, neat kit, but way overpriced.

Regarding the CPU temps (which are totally fine and by design for Zen 4), was this with or without some active fans in the chassis you installed the motherboard in? Other than that, this seems to be a prime candidate for a SFF PC I wanna build for my living room.
That is the only turn off for me with that board is no sata because i have a few 2tb 2.5" SSD's i would of used in a system with that which i would of at least like 2 sata connections so i could use 2 2.5" drives and 2 NVMe's so i could have 8tb of storage in total.

You should also benchmark the BATTLEFIELD 2042 with 128 players, it destroys cpus.
I will say, I ordered one and it came DOA. The fan would spun up when the ATX power was connected without jumping the start pins so I sent it back, credit to Minisforum got a full refund no questions asked.
With *32 MB of L3 cache* , sort of surprised that everyone is not praising the L3 ❤
For productivity, BD770i and/or 7745HX cpu might be nicely performant 👍

At one end, I am also of the mind that i expected better thermals from a notebook Ryzen cpu, especially with the mass of that big cooler (unless the cpu is actually under the small one). Granted, i also expect notebook makers to still fail it by putting crappier cooling still.
I just found this today from another channel. the 8 core is not available naymore, but the 16 core is also steal. The package is slightly cheaper to buy than a 7950x CPU and we know how much AM5 boards are. The board might not have Rebar support but I don't plan to buy high end GPUs. I just need high core count for browsing and Handbrake encoding
Im super interested in the Minisforum BD790i. Having a 16 core 32 thread cpu in such a small package is crazy. And it costs a little less than a ryzen 9 7950x by itself and this unit includes a MOBO.

the problem is, you'll have to discard the CPU if your mobo fails.
theres no salvaging that CPU from a soldered on board.
@sc9433 Obviously. But from what I understand, CPUs generally last longer than mobos. So the mobo is more likely to fail first. In this case, imo if you already have to buy a new mobo, you may as well buy it on a new platform if available and get a new CPU with it anyway. But in either case I'm sure this has some kind of warranty, and I rarely ever hear about CPUs or Mobos failing unless they are super budget poorly made motherboards. Especially ones set up as an all in one unit like this one should be fine.
This thing is awesome honestly. Love it. Wish more mini motherboards like this were capable like this one is.

From what I've read, the hardware is good. The software/BIOS support is not. BIOS updates aren't regular, this needs to be brought up in the video which is a big miss.

I would've probably removed that M.2 cooler and get some ssd with a passive cooler on it and cool it with the 120mm fan.
honestly if this was like 150-250 bux it would be a hit. when he said almost 400 pounds me knowing thats more than usd these days i pretty much didnt care anymore. i could pick a mobo cpu for less. yes it may not be as small of a form factor. but it would also be a more powerful processor. i build computers so im crafty when it comes to selecting items.
i also have always built big on mine for cooling and didnt care about small form. but always wanted a small frag box to take with me places. and have had a pipe dream of that for decades. nowadays you can buy a handheld system with a quad or 6/8 core processor that is weaker but it has everything all in one with a 7 inch hd screen for under 200 usd.
im literally between do i build a frag box or do i get the handheld. handheld wins. the frag box comes later.
The price is pretty good for what you are getting. Slap a dedicated GPU on that puppy and you have yourself a good SFF gaming machine.
Ryzen 7 5700g and asrock b550 mini itx ac, total up to 260$ new , has wifi and has sata ports could be a fine itx build but this idk seems not too bad but your getting a laptop cpu
It is very unwise to buy this if you are not gonna pair it with discrete gpu, for igpu only small pc get something that has the radeon 680M/780M on board!

I was looking at one of these to bulld in a hyte revolt 3 case. It needs to be 100 bucks less in my opinion. You can buy 7600x and cheap am5 itx mother board cheaper than this and the desktop cpu will out do it. Not to mention you have to use less powerful laptop ram and it costs more.
Hello, I was looking at the installation video on Minisforum website and it looks like you have the cpu fan installed backwards. It looks like air should be pulled away from the heatsink rather blown on it. The thumbnail for their video has it installed the way you have it, but in the actual video they have it reversed. I'm not an expert, just sharing what I saw on their website. Cheers!!
I would very much like to see what GPU the igpu is comparable to as well as a comparison for the cpu. I am actually thinking about this board, because it doesn't seem like a bad deal.
Not a great showing from the integrated graphics tbh, at this point a microwave could run things like GTA5 and most E-Sports titles, this is a let down as this would be the main draw for something like this imho.
Did you check the PCIe Slot? My Board seems only to deliver PCIe 1.0/1.1... checked with CPU-Z, GPU-Z and HWiNFO64... idle or full load... it always just shows PCIe 1.0/1.1 x16... GPU used is an Inno3d RTX 4070 Ti X3 OC.
Well, verified the "seems" to "uses" in the meantime... Made an Aida64 GPGPU Benchmark Run in the Meantime which shows 3188Mb/s Memory Read and 3218Mb/s Write... which is MUCH to low for an RTX 4070 Ti... -.-
Seems they have a "little" Bug in their UEFI Bios...
I would be interested to see what the system with an RTX 4080 or 4090 does in terms of FPS in 1440p or 4k
SATA ports required, I have whole set of hard disks which I don't have any use for. Also you should have removed the cooler to show wants underneath.

@@tylerraem I think they called it the BD790i (from the website linked in the description), but releasing next year is still a bit late, given that Zen 5 will be right around the corner. Still, given how efficient 7945HX can be, I still have my hopes up about its performance (managed to get my 7945HX all the way to 37642 cb in R23 with 122W due to 108A EDC)
one thing i am always curious about with these laptop cpus and mobos is if there is support for overclocking/ undervolting. you could certainly ease your temp troubles by setting up some parameters while keeping your clock speed high
Call me dumb, but I don't get who's this kind of motherboard aimed for? There's plenty of small motherboards that will support desktop components, that will be more powerful and upgradeable, right? Am I missing a potential case scenario where this makes more sense? Impressive stuff anyhow for sure.
yes, it all depends on the price. the normal asking price is too steep as you can just buy any itx board with a desktop cpu that fit your performance/budget needs and come out even cheaper. power draw can be made identical. if they are on sale however it can be quite a nice package.
Over here in the US, for the same price as this board chip and cooler you can get a 7600X with a board and cooler and a GPU equivalent (Probably much better in fact). The 7600X is about 25% faster in games overall as the 7745HX is a mobile part. And you get full size RAM with the 7600X option which always has lower latency than it's laptop brethren for less money. This does not in any way represent value for money. It is a neat little piece of kit though and if it were about half its price it would be worth it as a starter PC. As is it would make an AWESOME HTPC that could really game. For this to be worth its price it should have a case and PSU.
7745hx on laptop is different than this 7745hx.
This one can effectively boost to 120w due to better heat dissipation, compared to laptop counterpart that only draws half the wattage.
This model here is neck and neck with 7700.
and its impposible to find a Mini-Itx Board at such a price with PCIE 5.
If you want to build a small form factor mini-itx that you can carry around with a portable monitor setup, this is the cheapest it can ever get.
@@sc9433 The 7745HX is the 7745HX and I didn't base ANYTHING on this video. It is actually slower in EVERYTHING than the 7500f, let alone the 7600X or vanilla 7700. That is because it's a mobile processor designed to be a mobile processor. I understand your contention with cooling but in this case it does not make it faster than the 7500f let alone the 7700. Based on the price you CAN get an mITX AM5 board. I priced it out before I posted. Again, neat kit, but way overpriced.
You're not giving the credit that the 3060ti deserves. It's one of the best gpus Nvidia put out last few years. It literally runs everything at 1440p.

That is the only turn off for me with that board is no sata because i have a few 2tb 2.5" SSD's i would of used in a system with that which i would of at least like 2 sata connections so i could use 2 2.5" drives and 2 NVMe's so i could have 8tb of storage in total.
for me it will be dream pc , mine is letteraly going very bad , no money no dreams
