- This week marks 29 years since the Bosnian Serb army butchered and killed more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys in and around the town of Srebrenica during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The remains of their bodies have been found in dozens of mass graves in hilly and forested areas in the country's east. The killings happened even as Srebrenica was deemed a safe zone under the protection of the United Nations. This year's anniversary comes just months after the UN General Assembly declared the 11th of July an annual day of remembrance of the genocide. Every year, new victims are identified and given a proper burial.

Naser Orić (1967) was the commander of the units of the muslim so-called Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the territory of Srebrenica during the Bosnian-Herzegovinian war in the early nineties of the 20th century. Before the Ottoman Turks invaded Bosnia in 1463 AD Srebrenica was a Roman Catholic town populated by Croats and Saxon miners ( who worked in the silver mines). After the Ottoman Turks finally captured Srebrenica in 1522 AD the Roman Catholic church was destroyed in Eastern Bosnia and the Ottoman Turks started to bring in Serbs into the region. So these are the tragic historic facts of the region.

Undermining what happened in Srebrenica is not the right way to go. Should we talk about the other Bosnian cities? Foca where so many Muslim women were raped? Sarajevo and the siege? Serbs started fleeing Srebrenica itself already in April, and by mid-May the town was ethnically clean.
A particularly large exodus began after May 8 and the murder of Goran Zekić, a Serbian deputy in the then Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina. His car was stopped by Muslims and was riddled with gunfire in the immediate vicinity of Srebrenica. After that, the remaining Serbs in the city had to run for their lives. Hardly anyone managed to bring anything but the most basic personal belongings.
The Serbian population in and around Srebrenica is now in exile and this community has been erased from the Serbian nation. Only three Serbian villages remained: Crvica (475), Liješće (97) and Petrića (135). Out of a total of 9,390 Serbs who lived in this community, only about 860 remained (in addition to the mentioned villages, this number includes the inhabitants of Skelan) or a symbolic nine percent.
