    I drowned twice. As a result, I developed a fear of the water. Not all water, pools, lakes, that kind of thing. Then I had kids, and like all kids, they wanted to go swimming in the summer. I took them, but they really wanted daddy to get in the water with them. I didn't want my kids to see their dad was afraid of anything, so I got a membership at a gym with a pool and started getting over my fear. At first, I just sat on the edge with my feet dangling in the water. Then I went to the shallow end and actually tried to walk around. That was very difficult. Today I can get in and paddle around. I am OK as long as I don't go under. I went down a slide in April and went under at the end. I had a moment of panic, but I survived. I am still not completely at ease in the water, but at least my kids never saw me freak out, hyperventilate, and go full-blown panic attack like used to happen.

      @@acelophobicindividual8924 Out of curiosity would you provide a viable alternative for my use of the word 'forced'.
      Just trying to learn.
      Although I do find the 'concrete' and 'pragmatic' laws of language to be illogical, too narrow and too precise.
      Why not make every word be able too be used in a general way (unless specified in the word itself). Make no exceptions in laws of language and let every new concept to speak of, have a word that doesn't conflict with existing laws?
      This way you can also simply make new words (in the same way, as for instance, pineapple is made), but ten times easier and easier to falsify/verify.
      Instead we simply choose to make it hard on ourselves and learn words and context apart, why not let the context be provided IN THE WORDS? So that you understand immediatly what it means.

    i was afraid of spiders since i was a sperm, one day a friend of mine took a spider in hand and showed it to 2 other friends of ours, they were scared and he laughed(didnt bully them, just playing) i didnt show my fear and pretended i wasnt scared of spiders. so,this guy with the spider gave the spider to me to hold it for a minute, so without exposing my fear i took it. a few seconds later my fear of spiders became past tense and i played with the spider. i learned that i should face my fears instead of running away from them in order to become a gigachad. i'm 17

    even though i got ENFP-T on my personality test, i still get scared sometimes to talk to people but i force myself to do it. now i am less scared to talk to people in public places. i highly recommend complementing strangers. you can complement someone and use it to start a conversation, for example " i love that shirt!! where did you get that??". it does work. if you feel like you can't go up to that person or you feel like they're in a bad mood it's okay to complement them. if anything it'll make their day 10x better.

    Hmmm sometimes not a good thing. Some don’t get stronger the get sadistic Like Ted Bundy. He couldn’t deal with facing the fact his Mother was actually his own Sister who was raped and he never knew his father for obvious reasons and “parents” were actually his grandparents. It drove him over the edge.
    I love Jordan Peterson so much ❤ but, is always the opposition of everything. Facing your fears doesn’t always make you stronger. Which is why we don’t live with Rats, Roaches, Snakes and Wasps and Drunken Abusers. They are not good to be around.

      the 'Living with rats because we are afraid of them' statement seems a bit out of touch of what he is actually saying. On the contrary: We don't live with rats because we are not afraid to kill them. Because some people are afraid of spiders does not mean that for them to face that fear, is to live with them.

    • @SemKeemink
      @SemKeemink ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As an extra to debunk your entire statement. He is saying that people should teach others to voluntarily face the things they know they must overcome to move forward in life, whatever that means for them. I don't think that even though rats are scary to many, that to love with them gets us moving closer to our self defined goals

    • @TheNamesFarquaad
      @TheNamesFarquaad ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Living with rats and snakes is a poor analogy because he's not talking about facing those types of fears. I believe he's talking about fears derived from being a complex human who has to deal with other complex humans so things like public speaking, standing up for yourself, taking risks, living on your own, etc...

      Are you a psychologist? You dont have the expertise to refute his claim.
      Hes dead right. Voluntarily facing your fears makes you less fearful, period. And no, it doesnt make you sadistic, what possible mechanism is there for that?

    What ever happened to the concept of contentedness? Everyone is always preaching about how we need change things or overcome something in order to reach our goals. My goals have already been met. I am perfectly contented with my life as it is right now. I'm not arguing that Peterson is giving invalid advice, I'm just pointing out that such generalizations run the risk of causing people to feel that their contentedness is somehow a weakness.

    Jordan Peterson is one of the most frustrating political figures to deal with. He sometimes gives pretty good advice, but sprinkled among that advice is absolute lunacy. In a world where people are viewed as either a moron or a genius it is frustrating when someone is right in the middle, because people see the smart parts and simply assume the stupid parts are equally smart. Peterson is in my opinion either the smartest dumb person or the dumbest smart person in the world.
