Moving to Glendale was the biggest mistake for that organization. Should have went to the east valley when they left the Arena, would have been a success.
Meruelo being out is a literal blessing to Arizona. Meruelo with a team is more painful than no team :DD.
Craig is the man, the whole PHNX sports team down here does an awesome job.
pussmorgan and his puppets
He’s a clown
He's a clown hack who was constantly pushing BS narratives, claiming the team was anything besides the embarrassing joke they always were.
@@ElmerFudd16 EXACTLY. pussmorgan isn't on merlos payroll anymore and now he's bashing him, what a scum hypocrite he is...
@@ElmerFudd16 EXACTLY
last year, reportedly the Coyotes were "worth" 500 million....the league paid 1.2 billion, apparently with the condition Meruelo not resell his rights in the "dormant" franchise. Meruelo is laughing all to the bank.
Somewhat off topic, but Merulo is also planning to move the Tucson AHL team to Reno....just 40 miles from where an ECHL team will be starting up this Fall. The man knows how to pick 'em.
This team was killed in 2003 when they moved them to Glendale.
more like the crappy owners they had over years...
No it died when it moved from Winnipeg in 96. Team was never supported whether it was in American Airlines West Arena or Jobing Stadium, didn't matter nobody went to the games. The NHL doesn't deserve that kind of putrid support. Give Phoenix an ECHL team that draws like 4000 and they can go back to Mullet Stadium.
@@antoniophx99 It began with a complete lack of foresight by building the arena in Glendale. The corporate folk in Scottsdale were not going to support the team that far removed. The novelty of hockey quickly wore off the moment the team kept failing to make the playoffs. This exposed just how much of a fan base the market truly had.
No owner was able to break even, let alone make a profit, by operating the Coyotes.
I am very happy with this news, but, I’m still moving with the team to Utah. I never liked this owner and he proved how awful he was
Demolish the blight Mereulo, and start fresh with a dedicated owner, who is willing to put together a competitive team, in downtown Phoenix, not anywhere along the 101, please. Spend money, don't be a cheapskate like Meruelo. Matt Ishbia has the potential to get it done!
I think Jeff put it the way it appears.. Alex is not innocent but the politicans were not playing ball either... The fans lose. Goodbye Coyotes.
4:17 perfectly stated. Exactly.
If you pay me five times what something is worth, I will gladly take the money and run.
I'm not sure how the league is going to look at this from a future expansion viewpoint but if it were me, quite apart from giving it anything at all like "preferred" status, I'd be giving it the scarlet letter treatment.
If you were applying for a job and you submitted a resume that showed a long history but that you'd been fired from multiple jobs, didn't pay your dues on time, had to be bailed out and were a general f**k up at your profession, why would you expect to be put on any shortlist?
After 28 years of little more than one calamity after another, I'd think the NHL would be burning rubber all the way to the state line in an attempt to get the H out of there as fast as possible.
Alex Meruelo will go down as one of the worst sports owners in the history of sports
"Hold my beer!" - Jefferey Loria
Harold Ballard and Peter Pocklington will go in history as the worst sports owners .
AM bought the franchise for like $300M and sold it for $1.2B. So as Craig Morgan said, this is a man who has made his fortune buying distressed assets. AM did exactly what he meant to do here and anyone who thinks he actually cared about the city or franchise is nuts.
Yup, AM long conned the NHL and fleeced them for millions.
For all the reasons this is good news, the most important is that it hopefully clears the way for a quick return to AZ.
It'll be AT LEAST 10 years before they're back
They need different ownership to bring hockey back to Arizona. Hockey has a place anywhere you make it possible, or popular, or where you build infrastructure. Growing the game in a place like Arizona might mean building rinks and facilities to grow minor hockey (kids, etc) in the area. Once the fanbase grows, bring an NHL team back. How popular is hockey in Arizona? Maybe someone can help answer that for me.
Any expansion team in Phoenix should go with a new name and colors. A fresh start.
He should not have gotten a special use permit, theme park? For an Arena and a bunch of residential units? What the hell?
What a biggest mistake ever for moving Arizona of that organization
How much did Leafs fans subsidize that franchise over so many years?
How many Cups have y'all won since the league expanded to more than six teams?
$1967
@brientaylorcohen how many Cups have Canadian teams won since Bettman took over? One. The year he came in.
The players you mean? They have like 18% of their pay taken out for escrow to pay for losses, you think the owners are going to absorb that kind of loss, no way.
@@SS-iv7wv Escrow account is a league wide loss reserve system, not team specific.
Arizona government doesn’t want hockey
Or need it.

Vampires don't see their reflection. "I've done nothing wrong"
Utah Coyotes then? Please?
No
To quote Roy Kent, Alex Murelo could build Jeff Bridges
Can the Jets get their history back?
I didn't hear you ask him if there's a chance Gary may have had his hand in this. People Gary isn't a stupid man, he could have said checkmate mate long ago but sold the worst financial team for 1.2 billion. THIS GUY GROWS HOCKEY!!!
No, he grows owners' pockets by gouging more money from the fans.
For Canadian fans celebrating here - you just lost your last chance of Quebec Nordiques 2.0. if the Coyotes were reactivated as a 33rd team the NHL would have to expand to 34, more likely 36 teams. That means Houston, possibly Atlanta, and definitely Quebec. Without the Coyotes there will be no Nordiques. 😛😛😛😛😛
Lol they'll just pick another market. ATL, QC, Houston and Kansas City/Portland/Milwaukee.
The league will expand without or without the Coyotes. (That doesn't mean they'll expand to Quebec but I don't think the Coyotes status would have had much to do with it).
If they wanna roll the dice on another expansion team in AZ, well, it's their funeral
Meruelo is almost as bad an owner as Harold Ballard was. Almost.
It is truly unfortunate that Bettman and his single-minded error of pushing hockey into a disinterested market has failed so spectacularly.
I was lucky to see a Coyotes game at Mullett Arena while doing some business in PHX, and it was an absolute blast.
But fact is that the US southwest just isn’t a hockey market. This failure is all on Bettman. 100%
Vegas proves you wrong
This was his plan, to keep the money. He just tried to save face with the public that he was trying to keep the coyotes
When you were talking about businessmen thinking they can get away with anything made me think of Trump. Except now it’s catching up with him.
How is this his fault? The city of Phoenix rescinded the bid. The people of Tempe rejected the arena deal. The city of Glendale kicked them out of their building because he wouldn't sign a 20 year lease.
I don't blame him for leaving at all.
The city of Phoenix rescinded the bid because he didn’t properly zone the site which is illegal. The people of Tempe voted no because the opposition spent $25,000 in campaign ads against the stadium. He spent $2,500. He was locked out of the Glendale arena for not paying their lease. Its pretty simple to see why its his fault
He didn’t get the proper permits he had permits for a children hockey arena not for to house a professional hockey team so this is all on him nobody else they had to cancel the auction
@@diegopadilla8543that is not what happened in Glendale what actually happened is he refused to sign a 20 year lease
@@diegopadilla8543 Az never supported the Coyotes. 30 years, multiple owners, multiple arenas, all the same results, low attendance and no interest. Good riddance, they deserve the college team at Arizona State that's about it. Fill that up and be happy cause the NHL is never going back there.
I point the finger at the fans and the media for Alex Meruelo walking away from the Coyotes. The fans and the media never gave Alex Meruelo a chance. The fans and the media are a disgrace.
You have got to be kidding me! You gotta be this misinformed to think Alex Mereulo was a saint.
He’s the reason the Coyotes sold their future on-ice product to Utah of all places.
F THAT GUY
So can Utah be the Utah Coyotes?
No too much bad juju
They shouldn’t want to be
The name reverts back to the NHL. Plus Utah wants no part of the brand.
Utah wants every culture except their own. Even stole Jazz from New Orleans even though there are no jazz clubs in Utah.
Should be the Utah Potato Salads. Or the Utah Sister Wives. Or the Utah Golden Plates
@@TheHauntedKiwi the Utah coyote jets
Arizona state land dept. typical politics played. I do not care who for whatever reason disliked Meruelo. He was played with by cheap deceitful politics in my book.. Most cities would kill for a franchise,.
Would they kill for a mismanaged franchise with a bad reputation that regularly fails to pay their bills?
30 years in the desert, hope the NHL never goes back there. Arizona won't support hockey.
Had nothing to do with support it was pure bad ownership
@@nickb2912Atlanta and Arizona had the one common denominator.
Disgraceful and historically pathetic owners
@@nickb2912 went to many games there from Vegas to see the VGK at Jobing Stadium and all the way back to when they played at American Airlines Western Arena in downtown in the late 90s. Never once did I see a stadium more than half full. There's no way you can tell me a city that size shouldn't be able to sell out when tiny cities like Winnipeg get bigger crowds. Sorry, I just never saw it and I went to a lot of games since PHX and LA were the closest NHL cities to me before we got the VGK.
@@SS-iv7wv mainly because the ownership groups never put a quality product on the ice. They averaged 12k in Glendale
@@nickb2912 The classic excuse from the sun belt hockey fan. You're no different than Silly Willy in Fatlanta.
Im shocked I tell you shocked that a billionaire suckered Bettman
RATS WON!!!
Who cares I certainly don’t wow took them 30 years to win one title so next title will be 2054?
@@krakenNationlol your team doesn’t even have a cup. Florida made the finals in their third year, Seattle hasn’t even gone to the third round.
Finally.,..hasta la vista.
Long overdue end to hockey in the barren desert.
Now move Buffalo to Hamilton and move on.....
