    Ah, what a bugger, Mitch! They are great vices. I hope you can repair it without any trouble. Looking forward to the next instalment.

    Oh that was heartbreaking! Hope you can fix it. Ive never had the guts to weld cast iron. I can’t wait to see how this turns out.

      Cheers. With all the prep work done, I hope the welding works out. Otherwise I'll be on eBay looking for anther one

    Very unfortunate accident, Mitch. Best of luck on the repair. Record vises are one of the best vises.

      Haha, there's a reason I wear steel toe-caps these days

    Hard luck Matt, I have the same problem, I will have hold of something and suddenly my hand thinks they belong to someone else and I drop things for no apparent reason. I go out once a week for a meal with three others and it is really annoying when I just drop a knife or fork. I try to control it but I can almost guarantee that I will drop something at least once within a meal and unfortunately it is not just confined to cutlery, and I have to try to stop lifting anything that would hurt badly if I was to drop it on my foot.

      Cheers John. I'm waiting on another appointment with rheumatology to try and slow the progression. I've been pretty lucky so far though.

    Sorry to see your issue. It made me wince.
    I have a record sitting in a corner of my garage for so long I am embarrassed to say. It’s time to put it on the workbench and get going with it

    I have used stainless steel rods on cast iron successfully, warm
    The cast iron up, weld it and let it slowly cool in dry sand. As with all cast iron repairs may last forever, or crack hours after, not under any stress. This was using electric arc process. If it fails get it brazed. Again preheating. Hope this helps.

      @mitchwoodwork  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks David. I only have mild steel rods, so I've ordered a couple of cast iron. Only have an MMA welder, which seems to be the preferred method. I do have plenty of propane to warm it up slowly, and a bag of sand that I can set it all up in.

      We used a product named Weldall. It had a high nickel content.

    A tip. If you are going to make chamfers to maximise the welding area use a file rather than an angle grinder. Using an angle grinder can bring all the impurities to the surface and render the weld weaker. I know from a sad experience.

    • @mitchwoodwork
      @mitchwoodwork  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Robert. Is that due to the temperature created? I've read it's best to pre-heat to about 700° for a better weld too

      @@mitchwoodwork I think so. when you heat up the parts it is a uniform heat whereas if you grind it it is a local heat.

      I think I'll try and find some other cast iron to practice on

  • @HeavyboxesDIYMaster

    I guess you could add a metal or wood face plate to the inside of that vise and the broken part won’t matter, maybe?

    • @mitchwoodwork
      @mitchwoodwork  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a though, if my welding doesn't pass muster

    Oops, that can happen.
    you also made a video about welding, which welding method do you choose? :-)

    • @mitchwoodwork
      @mitchwoodwork  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Gunter.
      I've tried MMA, MIG, and TIG, but I only have MMA equipment, so that's what I'll try for this.

    • @gunterschone8402
      @gunterschone8402 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mitch,
      Thanks for the answer.
      The cast electrodes would then be required for electrode welding (MMA).
      Slightly sand the break on both sides, ideally only on the inside. When the weld is finished, you can grind the fracture on the outside until you get to the weld. Then you can weld. :-)

    you need brazing to fix not welding. Go to someone who had oxy acetiline and he has a black belt on brazing. Hope it works

      Thanks, but the welding has stood up okay so far. It was a lovely vise, but I had no idea it was that old. I can trace it back fifty years though, and know it was old then.
