  • Hi Everyone,
In todays tutorial, I teach you my method of how to saddle stitch the traditional way with a stitching awl. This method takes some practice, but its quick and efficient once you get it.
    Love,
    Ira

Great tutorial, dude! I like that you stress not pulling it too tight. I used to when I started and I see a lot of new leather workers doing it, getting those stitch wrinkles.
And 4 bonus tools?! It was like 2 videos in one!
(Is it weird that I thought about the old '80's Robocop movies where he had that spike that comes out of his hand when I saw you using the awl?)

Little known fact that Robocop was an avid saddle stitcher. Even though he had the technology, he preferred the age old tradition of saddle stitching with an awl. So much so, that he even had a stitching awl installed in his hand.

Great Video Ira, I never get tired of watching you work your magic on that leather! even though you've shown me how to do this before I think I actually learned a bit more, or at least a lot more make sense to me now. Hey out of curiosity you mentioned that a lot of the other video's are missing a step that you think is essential what step was that?

Haha I guess I assumed most people watching this were already stitching leather with a hole punch! In my method I use a stitching awl instead of a pricking iron or a 4 or 6 hole punch, and I punch the holes with the awl as I stitch rather than punch them first and stitch later. When you guys came over and built your tomahawk sheaths, we drilled the holes on the drill press, and then took them to the stitching pony to stitch. Slightly different method. The awl is old school!
