They trolled us at summer-fest. They started playing "in the mall" and then the crowd was silent, but then 30 seconds in they interrupted it with "Back to the shack" and the crowd just roared
You mentioned that EWBAITE is somewhere in between Blue/Pinkerton and Green/Maladroit. I personally believe that this album falls right next to Blue, and just below Pinkerton. I've never stopped liking Weezer at any point in the last 20 years. I admit they have had ups and downs, but I don't think Make Believe is a bad album but it's also not my favorite. EWBAITE rises above EVERYTHING post-90s though. The lyrics finally get back to the dark emocore vibe of Pinkerton. They are experimenting. They put out weird melodies that work, like in Blue. One thing that you didn't even mention in your review was the framing device, which we have NEVER seen in a Weezer album but works beautifully here. What makes this album rise above everything else they've done this century, is that they are innovating again. They do one of the most powerful songs they've written to date with Foolish Father, and then go ahead and top it with the Futurescope trilogy. Return to Ithaka is so freaking beautiful. This thing belongs right up there with the 90s albums. And just a couple personal notes: Could Eulogy be about Kiss? Could The British Are Coming be about Punk Rock in general? I am surprised you didn't like DaVinci. I am not a fan of the whistling, but I stopped noticing it after the first five seconds. The lyrics blew me away, and the chorus is so catchy. It has my favorite lyrics in the album and it might be my favorite song on the album besides Return to Ithaka. I think it's certainly possible that Cleopatra is self referential. Nice Truffaut reference. You are really well cultured. I lost it during the Strong Bad reference. You are definitely very well cultured. I hope everything goes better with your hellspawn breakup. ... ... A Goddamn Bear.
Drop Therapy Hi, you probably saw my comment about my interpretation (If you take the discography as a whole) meaning of Tool songs. I'm going to get back to it as soon as possible.
The Rock Critic apt? I feel stupid for not knowing but when I wrote the comment I had the thought of like the first sentence or so of "Serve the Servants" By Nirvana ;o ( Lol that moment you read a word and expect it to be an acronym for a band xD Ignore this this stupid comment i made lol.)
What is amazing about this album is that it's not just a return to form in ways, but it also shows growth from even their first 2 albums. There are the Queen elements in "I've Had it Up to Here" that were not found in Blue or Pinkerton, plus that pretty prog trilogy at the end. It stands on its own and yet fits cozily in with their better albums (which I count as everything from Blue through Maladroit). Probably now my 3rd favorite album by the guys and definitely my pick for their most ambitious!
I have seen your WEEZER series in just a couple of days. They've been so fun and passionate, and this chapter it's so touching with this emotional and uplifting final note... So good.
Hash pipe, island in the sun, Beverly Hills, perfect situation and pork and beans all were in the charts, Beverly Hills and perfect situation were at the top for weeks and island in the sun is their most listened to song ever.
@@MH-sg8rn yes and all those songs came out before 2009 so the original comment still stands. I personally think that span is correct but for different reasons, as the extreme hatred towards Ratitude, which came out that year, probably seemed like something they couldn’t come back from at the time.
"Ain't Got Nobody" is, like many of the other songs on the album, is not just a love song, but a song about Weezer's relationship to their fans. The girl that was just pretend were the fake fans, the "Beverly Hills" fans. He's looking "all around the nation" for his TRUE fans. Cuomo, being something of a narcissist, has used the love of the fans to fill a void left by a parental lack of love. "Da Vinci" is obviously a song written for Cuomo's wife. To me, I don't know how you aren't touched to see the man who wrote the clingy, creepy, raw and beautiful Pinkerton in a stable, loving, mature relationship. Hell, he outright tells us he's settled now with her in "Back to the Shack". Also, "Women are a complete mystery"- Stephen Hawking. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/stephen-hawking/8993228/Stephen-Hawking-Women-are-a-complete-mystery.html "Cleopatra" is about Cuomo growing older, not a woman. Cleopatra is just supposed to be the archetypal floozy, the ones that Rivers is writing about in most of his songs (you know, the ones in the "Beverly Hills" video). These throwaway lusts can't control him anymore, he "older" and "colder", and doesn't burn as hot and cold as before. It comes right after "Da Vinci" for a reason. And "The Futurescope Trilogy" is the final apology to the fans. He doesn't have the right words to persuade you, the individual Weezer fan, to love Weezer again, but that final guitar solo is a love letter to you beyond words.
I actually watched this series over the passing of a few days. I'm really happy that everything actually was alright in the end. What you said about sales not mattering in the end and effort and sincerety being the most important thing really spoke to me. I'm a crummy internet artist who doesn't get a lot of attention almost to the point of frustration. What you said there really just makes me not want to give a fuck about that and just do what I enjoy. If you build it, people will come.
Regarding Cleopatra, don't get creeped out at the 5, 10, 15. Think of years together, not a girl's age. Think of a guy getting divorced after 40 years of marriage because somebody really weak fell for her spell; she's getting herself born again, and you are like "good riddance".
Loved this album, but sir, gotta say, making a 1 hour long video filled of humour, and content it's not at all an easy task. So, you sir have my respect.
A goddamn amazing return to form. I was one of those guys that waited for YEARS for something like this to come along(and pledged 150 bucks for this slice of awesome) and Weezer delivered. Glad to have been along for such a wild and touching ride through nostalgia lane. Can't wait to see what you pull off next. Maybe short little "Mini docs" that sum up a band(like, say, Talk Talk, The Hip, Rush) in one video, rather than something on such a grand scale. But hey, glad we can focus on one less beast of a project. Keep the sub, man. Love your work. Cheers, Taloora, and peace.
Thank you very much. Yeah, projects of THIS scope I'm going to put on the backburner for a while. But I do have alot of ideas in mind for the channel. Quickies will still happen and full reviews of a smaller nature will too (kinda like my St Anger episode), and I have a few other ideas I'll be working on. But yeah, this is by no means the end. We've still got PLENTY of rock to discuss. Thanks again for the support, eh. Cheers!
when i saw the time stamp, i thought this would be a podcast kind of video. but goddamn how i amazed i am that this is an entirely well-crafted and well-edited video. you are amazing!
The Rock Critic Nah I'm in an art college haha When you're in a literal college level coloring class the teachers seem less inclined to yell at you for having headphones in haha
I don't think I've Had It Up To Here is trying to apologize to fans and the public. It's almost the inverse of what Back To The Shack is saying. Riviola is fed up with being written off as a "nostalgia" band act. Everything they've done and will ever do is going to be compared to Blue and Pink. And as an artist that must get frustrating. I wish this would've been the lead single. It's sassy, snarky, and so so so so good. Also, I think The British Are Coming could be about going against those who are in a higher position of power trying to keep you from reaching your goals and dreams. Possibly about their label(s)? It could be either Geffen or Republic Records, but they're both owned by Universal Music Group so they're practically the same thing.
Also very good theories. You know, that's another thing I love about this album. The amount of fucks given is STRICTLY zero, and it's so awesome to see this kind of genuine swagger out of the band. (as opposed to the faux-swagger preening on albums like Raditude.) I love this newfound sense of confidence in their music and I hope hope HOPE they build on it with the next release. Cheers!
Fun story: I was at the show (St. Louis) that you got the "I've Had It Up To Here" footage from. In that video it was taken from the balcony and Rivers didn't even realize there was a balcony until like halfway through the set and in the middle of one of the songs, he started looking up at the balcony and had this "oh crap" look on his face (and he mentioned that he had no idea there was a balcony when the song was done). I was personally on the floor for the show, but I figured mentioning the balcony story would be an interesting footnote. Awesome review (and series).
Because people thought that they're redemption was the Red album, but then Ratitude comes along and destroys the fanbase, along with Hurley. Then this comes along and BLOWS THE FANBASE AWAY
"this might be the first song where we get the girl's perspective" what about all the stuff from songs from the black hole? "you won't get with me tonight", "i just threw out the love of my dreams", "oh jonas", etc. that was more or less the whole point of that project (and it's also weezer's best work imo, beyond even pinkerton even though we just have the demos)
I finally found a reviewer that feels the same way about "Foolish Father". The song gives me chills all the time. AWESOME on-point review Crash! Can't wait to see what artist you highlight on the next "Rise and Fall".
You are one of the few people who I can watch hour-long videos from every time. Another great review and I agree with what you said. I thought this one was a bit heavy on the skits and they worked best when they were short, like the number 30 one.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. You know, I kinda agree with you there. Maybe I did go a bit nuts here. But hell, this was the big finale to the series, so I kinda figured I'd go for broke. Future reviews will be probably be on the shorter side of things so hopefully we can avoid that in the future. Thanks for the feedback!
So I've watched the whole Rise and Fall of Weezer series, and from what I can discern, pretty much all of their discography is at least decent with the exceptions of Make Believe and Raditude.
You, my friend, are seriously underrated. I don't think I could watch anything else on TH-cam for an hour and not fall asleep, let alone be entertained. Thanks. I love your channel.
Your reviews are fantastic! I've found this series so entertaining whilst editing videos and photographs. As a life long Weezer fan you've totally encapsulates the agony and the ecstasy of following this band!
Oh my gawd, right when he dissed on Divinci I'm flipping..... The song is clearly saying that she's different person around him. So different, that his friends don't believe him, Divinci couldn't see it, Steven Hawking can't explain it, nor can Rivers' himself. Note: A 14 year old boy wrote this. Feel old yet?
i think he understood it dude, he just doesn't think the song idea is very good and the execution was poor. he didn't dislike the song, just the lyrics are weak, and they kind of are. Not everyone is gonna like what you like bro, but i guess you'll understand when you're not 14.
I freaking LOVE this album!! The first two songs are kick ass!! By the way, here are my favorite to least favorite albums 1. Blue 2. Green 3. White 4. EWBAITE 5. Pinkerton 6. Maladroit 7. Hurley 8. Red 9. Make Believe 10. Raditude
Thank you so much Crash. Thank you for literally being one of the highlights of my life for the past two years. You've seen me comment over the years in your vids and this journey started when I was 14 now i'm 16 and you've strengthened my love for weezer. Thank you so much man
Congrats on finishing the series Crash. Can't wait to see what you come out with in the future. EWBAITE is one of my favorite albums of the year and I think it holds up well next to The Blue Album and Pinkerton. Also, you inadvertently got me addicted to Perfume. Just thought you'd like to know that.
I just finished this series for the third time. Man, the passion laced throughout is very much appreciated! I have always liked Weezer, but never really dug into their discography until watching these videos for the first time around. I was SO thankful I did, and it seemed to be the perfect time because they were putting out some brilliant albums such as this one, then suddenly I had the White Album which I listened to non-stop for at least a few months. I really considered that one to be even better than EWBAITE, but I absolutely love both of them. Pacific Daydream is one I haven't really listened to much of yet, but I'm sure I'll get around to it. Mostly, I just really appreciate this series and the obvious effort that went into it which helped pull me into the fold as a hardcore Weezer fan!
Ok I lied and secretly watched it in class while working on a project and man was it awesome! Just like the album this episode gave me the greatest feeling. Like things really did end on a good note. Great series, Crash. looking forward to the next. In fact I've been waiting eagerly for some single album reviews in the style of the Pilot episode. Can't wait for the next! keep it up!
Shit I'm not a Weezer fan, I basically watched your series because we decided to cover Pork and Beans in my band ... But these closing numbers, the Return to Ithaka thing ... As a huge prog fan, it made me want to listen to the record.
Give it a spin. If nothing else check out The Futurescope Trilogy. I never thought Weezer was capable of proggier stuff, but I'll be damned if they didn't prove me wrong.
Great job as always, Crash. I found the album on TH-cam a few days before it came out and gave it a skeptical listen...and boy was I surprised. I already knew I loved "Cleopatra," but the rest of the album floored me. Even "Back to the Shack" (which I was lukewarm on) sounded much better in context. I felt like I had finally gotten my band back...the Weezer that was my favorite band all through my high school and college years. (I was 17 when the blue album came out.) THIS is the kind of album I had been hoping for when the green album came out. I'm in agreement with most of what you said. I personally like "Da Vinci" a lot, although I agree with you that the whistling is slightly annoying. I wish Ric had gotten his way with that one. I actually think the lyrics in the chorus are quite clever (and nerdy), and I'm someone who thinks pop culture references in songs are very hit and miss. They have to be done just right and I think "Da Vinci" hits the mark. Also, I disagree slightly about "Futurescope." I think the whole damn thing is easily one of the best pieces of music they've ever laid down. Back when the red album came out, I heard a lot of people compare "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" to Queen, which I thought was ridiculous. To me, "Futurescope" is where the Queen comparisons feel apt. It sounds like it flew in straight from side two of "Queen II." No joke...I got choked up the first time I heard it and I have done so every time since. I feel like, with EWBAITE, Weezer rediscovered their charm and their innocence. You nailed it when you said it feels like they remembered it's okay to be nerdy again. That's why I fell in love with their music in the first place! Oh, and nice shirt! I came so close to buying that so many times back in the late '90s but never got the chance to pick it up. I do, however, have a Mykel & Carli benefit t-shirt. Still one of the five best concerts I've ever seen. Again, great job on ALL of these videos. I can't wait to see what you've got in store for us in the future.
Thank you very much. You make some very valid points yourself. Especially the comparison of "Futurscope" to "Greatest Man..." On "Futurescope" everything flows SO much better. "Greatest Man..." always felt really disjointed and mishmashed, but "Futurscope" is much more rich and vibrant and explosive in it's delivery. It's a technical GORGEOUS composition and THIS feels way more apt to lay beside Queen than GM. Yeah... it's nice to have them back. Like I said in the review, nothing makes me feel better than to be able to end this series on a high note. (And yeah, side 2 of Queen II... that is no joke. Love that album.)
It felt like I was going crazy waiting for this review to come out!!! Dick jokes importance aside, I actually Love how you analyze the songs, how you explain your opinion with actual insight to the lyrical content and structuring of the song. Simply just not looking at how they compare and correlate with Blue and Pinkerton alone. It's the reason why I feel like a LOT of people value your opinion in the first place
Honestly, and I'm not just saying this, if it weren't for this series of reviews, I wouldn't be the die-hard Weezer fan I am now. Back in September of this year, Crash, I watched the first one of the videos in the series from 2012, and watching it introduced me to the band. I had HEARD of Weezer before, but most of what I had heard was that they're some rock band that act silly and makes sucky music. You see, I'm only 19, so I didn't grow up with Weezer back in the late 90s when I was unborn and one of age when their first two albums dropped. Immediately after watching that review, I started listening to The Blue Album, Pinkerton, and even the unreleased Songs from the Black Hole. I listened to these albums over and over again all that same week. Imagine how shocked I was that right when I started getting into this band it turns out they would be releasing a brand new album, built up as their act of redemption, so quickly after first exploring their work. I'm just so glad how things turned out, and that I guess the rock gods answered your and all of our prayers by allowing EWBAITE to actually exist. Thanks for this series! I plan on re-watching it many times in the future.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed the series. I love hearing from people who got into this band as a result of watching my videos. That's the really the whole point of what I do. Even if someone disagrees with my opinion, if I can get them listening to the band and formulating their own opinions, than I've done my job. Thanks again for watching! Cheers!
28:28 i love how I had no idea about that fact before , and upon reading it, I can’t unhear it. It absolutely sounds like a melody JH would help compose
30:11 Rivers referred to "The British Are Coming" as an "extended metaphor". kroq.cbslocal.com/video/10673154-weezer-interview-on-the-kevin-bean-show/ Fast-forward to 3:25 or so.
This album made me want to dust off my guitar and start practicing again. Not even lying, Return to Ithaka made me tear up. WHAT A FUCKING OUTRO. My hands still hurt from all the clapping I was doing when it ended. I feel like I rediscovered the feeling of love through this album! Crash, if I held my arms out to hug you as a loving embrace for your amazing content, as well as Weezer's glorious return to form, would you accept it?
39:21 Well I don't think you'll see this on any other channel. Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix sitting with a female demon on a couch in hell, talking about breakups and trying to help her move on.
"Go Away is catchy" You're telling me. There was a cider advert a few months ago that had what sounded like an acoustic guitar cover, and good GOD it was stuck in my head for *weeks* trying to work out where I'd heard it before
Discovered this series while going through my own personal re-visiting of Weezer's history (inspired very much by EWBAITE) and I gotta say- excellent work, man. Weezer has such an interesting discography and it's always great to hear other passionate fan's personal journeys with it. You made me ponder AND laugh my ass off (side note: something about your pathetic Rivers Cuomo voice never ceased to tickle me pink). Great job on all of this, as a Weezer fan, I salute you.
No way. I love "Anonymous". It's perfect because it totally encompasses that feeling you have about a girl/guy that you see across campus or something that you are crushing on and you don't know their name. It gives you that crush feeling and the music totally fits that mood. Brilliant song and album! =w=
Man, I loved this album! I don't think I've seen a much more solid release that I've anticipated in forever! My favorites are Cleopatra, Ain't Got Nobody, Foolish Father and I've Had it Up To Here. And I also don't think there's a bad track! I think Sonic Highways by Foo Fighters is #1 in 2014 for me but #2 is definitely this. Great video once again!
Maybe to you, but it's pretty much 50/50. Some fans aren't in to the concept and the new sounds, others are glad to hear something new. My only disappointment is that it was only 8 songs. I didn't expect a lot out of the band because they're all in their mid 40s and they all have kids so I can see why they may not be the same as The Colour and The Shape or There is Nothing Left to Lose. I mean I don't expect a scream fest, or weird quirky lyrics that they used to do on the first album. All I expect from Foo Fighters when they say they're going to make a new album, is a new album because every album Foo Fighters have released is unique in its own way and I don't think they have a bad album. But you do have to watch the HBO series for the lyrics to really hit you. I don't blame Foo Fighters for having fun for themselves with this one. I'm sure Dave is tired of writing love songs and songs that people will assume are about Kurt Cobain
I can see your points and I do watch the HBO Series....but let me defend myself and have a nice debate with other Foo Fighter fans, that way I don't seem like an ignorant person. First off, I know the band isn't the same as back then. I understand if Dave doesn't want to write lyrics about love if he doesn't want to. But my problem with the lyrics is that they seem forced. They seem like they are trying to tell a story about the city they were in when writing the song, but they're jumbled and make almost no sense. Also the whole point of the album was to go to a city and get influences from there, but it's just the same typical Foo Fighters sound. Secondly, each song has a different contributor but I can hardly tell. It makes it seem useless and kind of a waste. Thirdly, IT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE AN ALBUM AT ALL! The tracks feel like B-Sides that were thrown into a pot and strewn together to make stew that has no flavor. The songs don't have a cohesive flow to them and the song's structures are so jumbled and battered that the tracks themselves don't stand on their own really well either. Not to mention the songs are super long, longer than they needed to be. In the end, I don't see this as Foo Fighters album. I see it as a special project, not a album. I wish they would have changed up the formula a little and experimented. They always play it safe. I'm sorry if this makes you mad, but I was just really disappointed with this release.
I see what you mean. I think Sonic Highways will eventually end up like Pinkerton. It's not going to be easy for people to digest but it is kind of artistic, and yeah I can see how some of the lyrics don't fall in place but then again the lyrics on their first album are a disaster and Dave said it himself. Though I can say the weird hooks on that album are so fun "fingernails are pretty, fingernails are good" kind of like "oh sweet ignition be my fuse"
If I were to pick 2 songs on Sonic Highways that suck out. It would be SFN because it's just a really well constructed song aside from what people say about the Holy Diver thing and Outside. Joe Walsh was probably the best contributor along with the preservation hall on In The Clear. And Outside is just so fun with the bass and the crazy jam after the second chorus when they're playing in what sounds like a 13 beat pattern
In Eulogy for a Rockband they wrote the song about what the band's fans were thinking after Weezer released Ratitude, which got released 15 YEARS after the glorious Blue Album went on market.
Man, when I listen to the Futurescope trilogy (especially part 3), it made me want to shed tears of joy. Damn, it's freaking good! Thank you for doing this retrospective, Crash. Because this Rise and Fall series got me interested in Weezer, especially Blue. And on top of that, you rekindled my love for Green Day after watching your GDR. Sending love from Indonesia.
A note on album sales, i have a feeling this album will sell a lot more in years to come as it will probably go down as yet another weezer classic, nothing to panic about now :) fantastic episode Crash :)
I'm a weez fan from the old days, I'm old. Besides a few decent catchy songs on some of the post Pinkerton records, I had lost all hope in Rivers. Your 1+ hour review expresses exactly how I feel about this album. Great fucking job sir.
This perfectly encapsulates my thoughts on this album! Quite honestly i think this album is right behind blue and Pinkerton on my Weez-List. I hope they can keep it up for future albums.
Can you please do 21st Century Breakdown? I don't see the problem with it, although there are some crappy songs on it, it has some of the best dynamics of any Green Day album and has really meaningful lyrics. What is wrong with it?
Da Vinci is easily one of the better tracks. It's light, simple, playful, and has quite possibly the sweetest sounding lyrics I've ever heard. Sorry to hear you didn't like it.
Eh, I didn't really DESPISE it or anything. It was maybe just a touch too lyrically corny for my tastes. It's still a fairly solid track regardless of my nitpicks.
Admittedly I paused the video to post that, and then realized you weren't just trying to completely shit on the song. Yeah the lyrics are corny, but it's part of the songs charm IMO
Your dedication to Weezer makes me so happy. Again, at first, I thought you would be dumb from the first video, but regardless of all of the penis jokes, you make great, well informed points about a great band. You hit the nail on the head with this review, and captured our feelings into your review. When I listened to the Album, I fell in love, and just realized all of the stuff they went through, and the growth, to make this album. Great job.
Thank you very much! I know my sense of humor certainly isn't going to be for everyone, but if I can get my point across and get people interested in the band I'm talking about, then I've done my job. Regardless of whether they laughed or not.
This series was epic. Great work! As someone that produces videos in a corporate setting, I can appreciate the amount of work that went into this. The scripts in particular were phenomenal. I look forward to seeing this channel grow and the videos continue to get better! Keep creating! You have a lot of talent!
Thank you very much! For this basically being a no-budget show, I've been able to pull a few hacks here and there to make up for things. I'm glad you were able to appreciate and enjoy it. Cheers!
That was a very interesting review. I am 17 and never had to wait for a Weezer album to come out. I would just go to my older brother who had everything through The Red Album. The first song I heard was Undone and it was awesome! (I was like 8) but I never had to go through the pain of hearing a bad album after years of waiting. I can see how that would affect your opinion of raditude, my personal favorite. It had this lovey-duvey fell to it and I was in middle school at that time and really into this one girl and it was what I listened to. Also, for the longest time Hurley was the only album I could listen to because my brother got robbed and I loved that one too. Don't get me wrong Blue and the older ones are great but those are the ones that made me love Weezer.Thank you for all of that helpful insight on the bands past and how it has made them less known.
Actually, it's taken from the Rock-A-Bye version of My Name Is Jonas. I slowed it down to about -150% and added some spooky reverb and detuning effects. It's actually really creepy when you mess with it like that. I'm happy with how it turned out.
I'm surprised you didn't think much of The Waste Land. It's more than just an intro, it's an outstanding track. And I'm pretty sure the line in Eulogy for a Rock Band is "50" years of ruling the planet, and Rivers has said that it is about another band/musician. Good job on this series, I enjoyed it!
Honestly, when looking up lyrics I saw both 50 and 15, so I wasn't entirely certain which was correct. 15 seemed to make more sense, so I went with that. And I didn't dislike "The Waste Land". It's a fine opening number, but I just couldn't think of too much to say about it. The whole Futurescope trilogy is pretty damn awesome.
Great job Crash! I've seen just about all your stuff and I really appreciate the work and research you put into these things. I've resisted making comments up until now but I think giving you thanks on this one seems appropriate. I'm thinking you were tempted many a time to give up on the RAFOW series. Again, a big THANKS (and keep these videos coming when you find the time)
Haha. Man, the temptation to give up was ENORMOUS! Especially early on. But I'm glad I powered through it. Thank you very much. I'm glad you've enjoyed what you've seen on the channel. No worries. More content is coming.
Man, I stumbled upon your review of Hurley just today and I really enjoy your content, specially The Rise and Fall of Weezer. I had this crazy idea, that maybe you could make the same series about some other bands? I specially suggest Anberlin, since I saw your "ketchup" where you had Lowborn review, and you said you really like this band... And welp, it's my favorite band, so it would be pretty cool to see your take on it. I like hearing others opinions :)
Hey man, I came across this video looking for the album itself. When I realized this was a series of videos, I decided to hold off on watching this one and start from the beginning. After watching every single review and then finally watching this one, I was utterly shocked at how similar our views are on the albums as wholes. Now I didn't notice things you did and I didn't agree with everything you said obviously but I did agree with a lot of it. To understand my perspective on music by the way, I am very composition focused, I tend not to care too much about lyrics. I don't ignore them completely or anything (I love how personal the lyrics of Pinkerton are for example) but I value a good sounding song more than anything else which is why most of the things you pointed out about the lyrics, save for a few here and there went over my head. Although lazy lyrics (like in fucking Make Believe) can bother me aswell. Anyways, like I said our general opinions on the albums are almost identical. Blue/Pinkerton obviously are the best, not exactly an original viewpoint there. Fun fact, Pink Triangle was the song that convinced me to get into Weezer. I had liked My Name is Jonas on one of the Guitar Hero games, fucking LOVED Suzanne at the end credits of the movie Mallrats, but it was Pink Triangle that made me go, shit I need to find this band Green was solid and enjoyable but that's about it. Maladroit is kind of underrated and definitely better than Green. Make Believe sucked major shit I also think Beverly Hills is a terrible song. The sad thing is that was my first exposure to Weezer in my life X_X Red was weird and experimental but it had some good, even great moments. Radittude was FUCKING EAR RAPE......... I hate to say it but I couldn't even finish it. As much as I hated Make Believe, I listened to the whole thing. I mean, yeah it was only once (can you blame me?) but hell I at least sat through the whole thing. I couldn't do it with Raditude, I just got pissed and stopped. Hurley was surprisingly decent. I actually like Memories a lot though so we disagree there but hey it's cool man, which real quick I want to mention that I like that you're really respectful of other viewpoints which is really good on you man as that isn't easy to do. It's very easy to just dismiss others and insult their taste/intelligence etc. but you you try hard not to succumb to that and I respect that. As a reviewer myself (video games and anime, not music) I succumb to that kind of thing myself on occasion and while it's not something I do often or anything as I try to remain respectful, I do have urges to be nastier than I should when dealing with certain people. However I gotta say that watching you has made me want to make more of an effort to not allow that sort of thing to happen. Getting back on topic, while I am not sure I would put EWBAITE over Maladroit just yet, (might need to listen to it more, maybe re-listen to Maladroit) I definitely agreed with A LOT of what you said in this video. It's not just a Weezer album that doesn't suck, or one that's just surprisingly decent, it's one of the better ones without a doubt and I fucking loved it. To be honest, I was 50/50 on your skits, some were funny, some I found annoying but I tend to be very critical of comedy skits in reviews since I come for the analysis and not the silly antics. Either way your videos were mostly focused on said analysis so I can't complain too much. It was a real treat to be able to watch these videos and see a fairly balanced viewpoint on the band. I get extremely tired with people that act like Blue/Pinkerton are the *only* good things Weezer has ever done and that everything else is shit so it was great to see a well reasoned perspective that doesn't simply paint everything post those albums negatively. You clearly worked really hard on this series and as a fellow reviewer I can relate. You have earned yourself a subscriber man, I hope you keep up the good work and hopefully Weezer can make a 10th album that builds on the good graces of EWBAITE. Rock the fuck on. \m/
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed the series! Even though my opinions on various portions of their catalog are... let's say, strong. I did want to remain as objective as possible and give credit wherever it was due. I'm a big believer n judging the singer and not the scene. Music effects everyone differently and no one opinion, no matter how well informed, can be absolutely definitive. Thanks for your sub! I hope you enjoy the channel, eh. Cheers!
so rock critic, i was thinking, perhaps the 15 years bit in eulogy for a rock band is about weezer, but it isnt meant as an end, so much as a new beginning. for instance, towards the end of this review you say this is weezer's most mature album so far. perhaps, the 15 years they are referring to is from blue album to hurley. the rock band that they are eulogizing is the old weezer, the immature yet endearing weezer we grew up with, as they become a new weezer, a more mature weezer. what do you think?
+thejourney2point0 if I was to put a theory as to the reference for the 15 years line, I would chalk it up to the time the current lineup have been playing together
Love these videos man, and this one did not disappoint. Know you probably want to stop dwelling on the song, but have you heard the rock version of Can't Stop Partying and if so what do you think of it? For reference, it's called the "Coconut Teaser Mix" There was also a full band version performed on the Weezer Cruise that's very similar to the Alone II version and that I think would be the definitive version if we had a better quality recording.
That was kinda harsh, actually. 2009 is just when "it became obvious that they weren't appealing to as broad of an audience as they were with their previous works."
PSIcoh I considered that as well, but then there are plenty of people that really liked that album, so I don't know. Again, the song is written very vaguely, so I don't think we're supposed to be drawing too many direct comparisons there. Regardless, it's still a good song.
Jesus Christ your videos are twice as long as the albums you're reviewing, but I love how in depth you go with all of the research and information. You deserve to be much more popular than you are.
I thought that the "British Are Coming" might be a metaphor for the bands relationship to a record label or something like that, but I guess that isn't the case. Also, nice review.
I was at Foolish Father's (And I think the Futurescope Trilogy's? Not sure, may have been already played) first live performance. Even though the only song off of Pinkerton, my favorite album, was El Scorcho, I actually was crying with happiness just seeing them play. The chorus of I've Had It Up To Here always makes me think of that night, because hearing it live was like being in heaven
I remember School House Rock because we watched segments of the show in elementary school based on what we were learning that month. I'm almost 32 years younger
This review was AWESOME, dude. English is not my first language, so I haven't really paid attention to the "Foolish Father" lyrics until now. And you nailed it. Also, yeah, I think you overcomplicated Cleopatra, but lol whatever. I always have chills when that beautiful solo comes up. Weezer has been in my life for some really long time and Pinkerton is one of the albums that helped me go through bad stuff. So it was so nice when I heard "Back to the Sack" for the first time. I will watch the others videos as soon as I can. See ya!
They trolled us at summer-fest. They started playing "in the mall" and then the crowd was silent, but then 30 seconds in they interrupted it with "Back to the shack" and the crowd just roared
100x more respect.
Kevin Luper You have gained respect
Yay
That's hilarious
Lol I remember that!
This should be called the rise and fall then rise again of Weezer

And then they fall again with Pacific Daydream and The Black Album

And then rise again with Van Weezer.
this album is like a best friend dying and suddenly being revived. sick review man, fantastic conclusion, maybe your best video yet
Thank you very much. It's good to have them back.
And just a couple personal notes:
Could Eulogy be about Kiss?

A Goddamn Bear.
That Cuomo impression kills every time lol.
Jagged One Official I’ve seen Rivers in some interviews and he doesn’t really sound like that. It’s still funny though.
I want the EWBAITE monster as a pet. :3
Who doesn't?
I want a plushie of it.
I saw you on the tool discography video! Hi there!
Drop Therapy Hi, you probably saw my comment about my interpretation (If you take the discography as a whole) meaning of Tool songs. I'm going to get back to it as soon as possible.
Sounds cool. I saw you a while before I came across the video that that was on, but after seeing that comment again, you seem to be everywhere.
"Teenage angst has paid off well now im bored and old" C:
An apt reference. :)
The Rock Critic apt? I feel stupid for not knowing but when I wrote the comment I had the thought of like the first sentence or so of "Serve the Servants" By Nirvana ;o
( Lol that moment you read a word and expect it to be an acronym for a band xD Ignore this this stupid comment i made lol.)

So good.
Portero Delantero Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
The last thing they released that hit the billboards was in 2009 1994-2009= 15 years
Hash pipe, island in the sun, Beverly Hills, perfect situation and pork and beans all were in the charts, Beverly Hills and perfect situation were at the top for weeks and island in the sun is their most listened to song ever.
Also, "Women are a complete mystery"- Stephen Hawking. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/stephen-hawking/8993228/Stephen-Hawking-Women-are-a-complete-mystery.html
"Cleopatra" is about Cuomo growing older, not a woman.
+Jacob Martin Cuomo is the opposite of a narcissist, he has to be one of the most self-loathing front men in rock music.
Da Vinci was one of my favorites from the album personally.

That's a good attitude to have. Glad you enjoyed the videos, eh. Cheers!
+The Rock Critic you need to review the white album XD

YOU'RE 31????
Dude you look way younger!
+Death Shot Society I get that a lot. 🙃
YES! As I write this I am in a classroom so I can't watch it now but I'm so freaking psyched! Welcome back Crash! We missed you!
Yeah! I can't watch it yet either!
Thank you very much! I hope you didn't get detention on account of me. :P
It could be either Geffen or Republic Records, but they're both owned by Universal Music Group so they're practically the same thing.
thats what Ive been thinking too. British are coming seems like Weezer crapping on their former label. It would be perfect.
#winner
Also very good theories. You know, that's another thing I love about this album. The amount of fucks given is STRICTLY zero, and it's so awesome to see this kind of genuine swagger out of the band. (as opposed to the faux-swagger preening on albums like Raditude.) I love this newfound sense of confidence in their music and I hope hope HOPE they build on it with the next release.
Cheers!
@@CrashThompson The exaggerated swagger of Nerdy Dads in a band making a neat album.
Ah 2014, a good time to be a Weezer fan.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SOOOO LONG!! Thank you!
You're welcome. :)
You should review more weezer, nirvana, rhcp, smashing pumpkins, and zepplin. That would be awesome, love your videos
I just binge-watched this entire series in one day. I started at about 4 am, and it's now almost 3pm. It was worth it.
I think they were referring to 1994-09 when they were talking about "15 years" line
Death Shot Society ss sucked
SS?
Because people thought that they're redemption was the Red album, but then Ratitude comes along and destroys the fanbase, along with Hurley. Then this comes along and BLOWS THE FANBASE AWAY
"this might be the first song where we get the girl's perspective"
what about all the stuff from songs from the black hole? "you won't get with me tonight", "i just threw out the love of my dreams", "oh jonas", etc. that was more or less the whole point of that project (and it's also weezer's best work imo, beyond even pinkerton even though we just have the demos)
Your scripting is so cringe-worthy but entertaining nonetheless.
Jbird scripting as in jokes or the actual review?
Good review. This album was definitely a return to form. I'm glad they're back on the right track again.
Back to the Shack
The only person on TH-cam that can manage to get me to sit down for a whole hour to watch a video. Serious props man! 👍 Love your vids by the way.
I finally found a reviewer that feels the same way about "Foolish Father". The song gives me chills all the time. AWESOME on-point review Crash! Can't wait to see what artist you highlight on the next "Rise and Fall".
"Just because you were born in the bowels of hell, does not mean you do not deserve to be happy."
I just realized, Weezer repeated history. Everyone thought they were done after their album flopped but they made a huge comeback years later.
@@Friendpersonkid Nah man, Da Vinci is one of the best on the album.
Thank you so much man
Happy to oblige. I'm glad you're enjoying the channel.
I agree. It's definitely making my albums of the year list for sure.
The Rock Critic Will you review Monuments to an Elegy on your next Quickie?
I'm considering it. Call it a strong maybe.
What about for your next Catch Up?
Thanks! I just like to do my best to show people where I'm coming from. I'm glad you enjoy the channel, eh!
Cheers!
Cheers!

Hey Crash, have you ever seen Weezer live? I saw them this past summer. They were awesome.
"Go Away is catchy"
You're telling me.
Sonic Highways is probably the most disappointing album I've heard
You deserve more attention man. You're really fun. Went through all your vids today.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
From what I've heard it's already gaining in sales, so I don't think we'lll have too much to worry about. Glad you enjoyed the episode!
That demon bit was actually really wholesome
Gr8 Ewb8 M8. r8 8/8
Now after this 2-year project is over, what are you gonna do with you're life?
Damn that's a big question to ask publicly
the rise and fall of green day!
Richard James green day hasn't fallen that hard
yes they did
Edd Childs III american idiot was good as an album overall, but yeah 21st century breakdown was just meh and i wasnt a big fan of the triology
Would you ever think of doing a R.E.M. review? Because that would be awesome.
Now that you're done with this series I hope you do a series called "The Rise And Rise Of Rush" considering they're your favorite band and also mine.
You and me both, brother. You and me both!
Can you please do 21st Century Breakdown? I don't see the problem with it, although there are some crappy songs on it, it has some of the best dynamics of any Green Day album and has really meaningful lyrics. What is wrong with it?
Rise and fall of green day is going to be s thing(sooner if he hits that milestone on patreon)
I enjoy this album very much. From beginning to end.
That Looney Tunes joke made me laugh harder than it should have.
Cheers!
Great opening sketch!
Have you heard the new Weezer single, and if so, what's your opinion on it?
If you haven't, it's called "Everybody Needs Salvation"
King Nuclearo I have. I liked it! Very solid track. I was surprised it didn't make the album cut.
I just noticed that the little melody at the beginning is a slowed-down version of the intro to My Name Is Jonas. Nice touch!
Actually, it's taken from the Rock-A-Bye version of My Name Is Jonas. I slowed it down to about -150% and added some spooky reverb and detuning effects. It's actually really creepy when you mess with it like that. I'm happy with how it turned out.
Ah, I see. I didn't even know there was a Rock-A-Bye version. And it turned out really well, too!
Cheers!
Also, best of luck with your own reviews! I checked out a few of your videos.
I'm a big Mega Man Legends fan, too. :)
The Rock Critic Thanks man! Funny you mention Mega Man Legends, I plan on releasing my review of the sequel this weekend. =)
The Hayley Williams part of this video kills me every time man😂
so rock critic, i was thinking, perhaps the 15 years bit in eulogy for a rock band is about weezer, but it isnt meant as an end, so much as a new beginning.
for instance, towards the end of this review you say this is weezer's most mature album so far.
perhaps, the 15 years they are referring to is from blue album to hurley. the rock band that they are eulogizing is the old weezer, the immature yet endearing weezer we grew up with, as they become a new weezer, a more mature weezer.
what do you think?
Or 15 years on a major label being well known
+thejourney2point0 if I was to put a theory as to the reference for the 15 years line, I would chalk it up to the time the current lineup have been playing together
+HuskerDu2 but that would have been 13 years
@@HuskerDu2 Blue to Raditude.
Love these videos man, and this one did not disappoint. Know you probably want to stop dwelling on the song, but have you heard the rock version of Can't Stop Partying and if so what do you think of it? For reference, it's called the "Coconut Teaser Mix"
There was also a full band version performed on the Weezer Cruise that's very similar to the Alone II version and that I think would be the definitive version if we had a better quality recording.
15 years after 1994 was 2009. 2009 is when raditude came out. Raditude was the album where EVERYONE lost faith in weezer.
Brilliant review and overall one of my most favourite series on TH-cam. Thank you for this Crash!
21:13 Or even under your favourite Weezer Snuggie. 😂
Great series man, just watched all the episodes. Very enjoyable, thanks :)
I still revisit this record quite often and it holds up remarkably well.
I immediately thought "Make Believe" at 38:50, and honestly, that's why actually love Make Believe.
I remember School House Rock because we watched segments of the show in elementary school based on what we were learning that month. I'm almost 32 years younger
43:21 as someone just a few months away from 29, I feel this on a personal level.
great review btw! hope more people find your channel, you really deserve it man.
Thanks! Feel free to spread the word. The more, the merrier!
See ya!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
