I’ve lived a mile away from the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve, and extension of our local metro parks system here in NE Ohio, for 13 years and never bothered to check it out until today. It’s adjacent to the property of McGuffey’s boyhood home. Hopped on here when I got home to learn more about him. I had heard of the McGuffey Reader before but didn’t know much else about him. What a wonderful person he was! Now I want to learn more!
McGuffey was a Christian and understood the importance of Scripture and the training up of children. Before McGuffey the New England Primer and the Bible were used to teach reading and doctrine in America.
Madame Alexander made a composition doll in 1937 named Ana McGuffey. I believe she is a character in the books. The purpose for the doll was to encourage girls to read his books. 💖
