The family working together to build a "pine box" for the man that helped to build the family. I will say this is awesome, good work, and good on all of you. I can only imagine his soul is smiling.
I’m sure your dad loved it. About three years ago, my siblings and I built a similar casket for my dad, using his tools, in his shop, with what he taught us and in his style. It was a very meaningful experience for all of us. I hope it brought your family together as it did ours.
well put together. many compliments. My brother used to make caskets back in the early 60s. This was a true artisan's work. Higher grade than the normal cabinet maker
I did the same for my beloved old man, who died in1992. He was an amazing, brilliant and loving man and father to me and my 5 siblings. He fought in W.W. II as a bombardier on a B-17, for 2 1/2 yeras and was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross"- TWICE! He was on a bombing run on June 6,1944 -D-Day. And the only thing he shared with me about the day was that-he had never realized that there were so many ships in the world-let alone in that one place at that singular time. He rarely spoke of the things he did while in the service-an apparently common trait with W.W. II vets. I was just starting out as a cabinet maker when he died. But I knew it was coming and inevitable-he had Alzhiemers for 6 years-and to see him whittling away was heartbreaking. And we all chipped in and took care of him at home till the end. The building took only a week. And was completed only a week before he went. I especially remember taking his measurements . It was then I realized that I was'nt measuring for a kitchen cabinet or a bookcase, it was my old mans resting place for all eternity.. Nice big dovetails and all. I think the old man appeciated the love and sweat that went into that box. I know he did and still does.Being 62 now- I have 3 daughters who are as far away from cabinetry as you can get. In the not too distant future- I believe I will start taking measurements---again. Seeing this video---I havent thought about these things in 25 years. Forgive my rambling. Peace.
I totally appreciate your "rambling." My father was too young for WWII, but my father-in-law won a Bronze star for making one working airplane from two downed ones in Germany during WWII. I did not know until a few years before his death back in 2006. He was married with one little 2 yr old boy when he got drafted. I still have his letters to my mother-in-law from those days. So glad he lived through it to father my husband into existence! Thank you for sharing about your beloved dad.
We were different Americans back then. Can you imagine a world war now? The services would be hard pressed to get 1/10th of the manpower it needs.. And can you even fathom what kind of reception a draft would get?
This is much more than building a casket. It is love, honor and respect for a man you loved you and his family and served his fellow beings. Thanks for sharing! Love ya Terry
I don't suppose you have any plans or anything like that which you could share? My 3 week old just passed and I always said that if any of my children or family members pass before me, I'd like to build their coffin. This was beautiful.
Drumdogg1996 the only casket plans I am aware of and are similar to this casket are sold by Rockler. They also have the hardware as well. If building for a loved one, it’s ok to use Rockler as a hardware source. If building commercial like we do, they are simply too expensive
I built the casket for my wife of 22 years. She fought the good fight, but the cancer won. I made her final resting place from Sassafras and cherry, so she would have that wonderful scent all the way to heaven. God, how I miss her..
Richard Arveaux sorry to hear about your wife. And thanks for sharing a little about your project. Wish there was a way to share photos on this platform
How long did it take to make? Was your father still alive at the time? Did you do the interior, or did someone else? Was it silk? Or satin? Was was the under lying material for the under bedding? Cotton? Straw? The carry rods, were they polished aluminum? Fixed position, or do they have a swivel point? Do you make them for a living also? Sorry I'm being nosey, but that's just how I am. Looks really good by the way.
Jeff McKenzie it took us about 2 weeks working on it a couple nights a week. Yes my father was still alive when we started the project. It was about 2 weeks before he passed away. Pancreatic cancer. I believe it was silk. And we used a foam pad from Home Depot. I do not make them for a living. But a good friends father had a cabinet shop and offered to help. The handles are fixed. They are stainless and off a fire engine. My dad worked his entire life as a Firefighter. Evan went to New York for 911 and helped search the piles. Thanks for all the questions.
Sadly, I'm about to embark on the very same project. My wife has a disease she aquired while getting rid of cancer. The chemicals used to kill the cancer is going to kill the patient. I can't let her leave this world without her knowing how much I love her. My last gift is a Sassafras casket, so she'll smell that wonderful wood all the way to heaven.
Richard Arveaux thank you for your comment. I'm very sorry to hear about your wife. Building a casket for my father ended up being very healing. I would love to see photos when you are done.
Hello, Cody! I'm a lady who loves wood-want a violin placed under my left arm and my guitar under my right-None of this hand-holding pre-arranged placement for ME! But PINE will be expensive-and shipping the old bones from California will be expensive! I saw a video of another wood-crafter in No. Carolina, who made BOOK-CASES that disassemble-or "reassemble" AS caskets, but I can't find him anymore! I've read the Bible several times , and I still don't understand why from "dus to dust, and ashes to ashes" should mean cremation-The Egyptians only had to cover themselves with CLAY and become lowered into the KILN for their final resting spots ? Being a sculptor, I kind'a like that idea-then the family can fight over the STATUE instead of little pots flll of ashes, right ? ANY SUGGESTIONS? I'm "dead-serious" too.
Cody, you and your family did a beautiful job! Veterans day this year (2020) we celebrated my moms 99th birthday! She is quite a lady and nearly everyone in our community calls her Mom! Unfortunately, just before her birthday, doctors discovered a very large tumor in her brain and she only has a few months left to live. She absolutely loves it when one of her sons "make" her something, as we are all experienced wood building hobbyists. Is it possible to get a plan of this casket? I am sure we can reproduce it from your video (not entirely reproduce as we have some ideas of our own), but it would help take some of the guesswork out of it. you can respond here if you like or reach me at rsstarnes@outlook.com. thanks!

Unfortunately we didn’t have any plans. It just kinda came together as we went along. I’m sure you will come up with something amazing.
