I’ve never purchased a bee. I think learned more doing removals than I would have buying nucs. Now that I’ve got bees, i just graft or split from the bees I have. Low risk high reward investment
I have watched a lot of your split videos. But. This one was my breakthrough. Nou i clicked. I will be trying it myself just after our winter. Thanx. GOD BLESS.

It really is awesome how strong and healthy our bees are this year. It will be about 3 weeks before I revisit the yards and at that point I will see if we have mated, laying new queens in our boxes. I'm praying we will. Thanks you for your blessings and for your support. God's peace Phil. Mr. Ed

Hey Bruce, what an honor having you drop a comment and watch the video, thank you so much for doing so. We wound up with 146 hives double supered up and another 35 either not ready to be split or have a board in them right now. Charlie is not happy with me at all now that we have 181 hives, but I promised we'd get down to 150 and he settled down. I hope all is well with you and your family. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Good morning, Mr. Ed Very informative video! I will tell my grounds keepers to watch your videos . This is an excellent educational video. This one as well should bee in the" Bee Hall of Fame " My wife said that is a beautiful morning sound the Rooster 🐓, she wants to have a few chickens on the grounds. Tell Charlie he is a fantastic camera, man. Yall, have a wonderful weekend, yea here!!!
This one was very informative! I liked your title Mr.Ed but I would have named it "Bee keepers Dream come true " P.S. just to like you know the sound of that rooster is music to my heart ❤️ God bless u Mr. ED and your Bees too!!!
Good morning Doris, and you are correct, seeing all those bees and queen cell is a beekeeper dream come true. I will think about retitling the video. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
It certainly is looking really good early on, let's just hope the bees can maintain this pace. If so, and nature cooperates with a good nectar flow, we will be in the honey! God's peace Jeff. Mr. Ed
Thank you so much John, it is a joy for me and Charlie to share our knowledge of keeping bees to all who chose to watch. I'm happy to hear your journey in beekeeping has been a blessed one, and I hope all the best for you and your girls in this year as well. Let me know how many swarms you catch this year. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
Our bridal bush is in full bloom. There are yellow petals everywhere. If you cut back the dead stuff that was frozen, it WILL come back. Just don't worry, Tallow is very hardy. God bless you and the queens of the bees.
You always do such a great job explaining exactly what you are doing and why you are doing it. Really helps new beekeepers like me understand. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience.
It's a real joy for me to share the little I know about keeping bees on the channel, but the real delight is when beekeepers like yourself tell me I have been able to assist them. Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to watch the videos. Until the next one, God's peace Dawn. Mr. Ed

Getting ready to move my 6 hives from the garage to the yard today. I placed them in the garage 10 days ago in hope to prevent chilled broad up here on a Northeast Ohio chilly mid-March. They had plenty of capped broad, but low be count. I'm hoping for a large boost of new shiny bees. I was wondering if using standard inner covers as a double screen divider board is possible. Just staple a screen/1/8" steel mesh on both sides of the inner cover hole and wallah:)
That may work, but if you go through the effort to do that, it may be just as much work to build a double screened board. I hope it worked out bringing the girls in from the cold. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Hi Jeff, First i have to say i really like your video's. I was watching you use your double screen board. I have to agree with Charlie, You were doing a lot of extra work for nothing. I hope Charlie isn't as lazy as i am. ha Keep making them vidio's.
So awesome to hear you enjoy the videos I produce, that inspires me to continue making them. Charlie was correct, I did a lot of unnecessary steps to achieve the same end results, and usually I like doing the least amount of work, but Charlie called me out on this one. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Great video Jeff, enjoyed watching it! last Monday we got down to 33f here in Southeast Alabama. It was pretty chilly but the bees are doing well. Hope your bees are doing well and hope you have a great spring! Have a great weekend Mr Ed :) Take care, Grayson
Hey Jeff. Theoretically couldn’t you have placed the queenless colony on the original spot like you did and then placed the queen right colony on the new spot instead of using the double screen again. Seems like it would have accomplished the same thing and you wouldn’t have to move it in the future. Of course this method will work but this was just a thought.
Charlie thought the same thing, and yes, it would work. However, because I did not have any supers with me and I could not capture the field bees returning to the original hive location from the queen box, I added the board back in. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
I've kept bees for about 5 years or so now. Only up to 7 hives ever though. I have yet to attempt raising queens. I do make splits sometimes but usually try to discourage swarming to get max production. I do attempt to catch swarms that arent from my own bees. Already caught 2 this year. Have scouts checking out my trap boxes again right now. Hoping for another swarm at any time. Feeling like i want to ramp up my bee game this year. Maybe up to 12-15 hives but would welcome more. Ready to get more serious. We can sure eat up some honey around here. Especially if we are making Jun kombucha. Thats some good stuff right there.

I will open a hive in 40 degree weather....but I do it when the temps are going to be rising during the day so it's no big deal to the bees. Happy Palm Sunday to you as well! Thanks for watching. God's peace Bob. Mr. Ed

First, thank you very much for your generous gift, it is greatly appreciated. Second, I find it your question very interesting because on Friday I had a conversation with Abbot Gregory about that very subject. As of right now, there is no back up beekeeper or succession plan. However, because the Abbee Honey program has developed so much over the years, it's perpetuation and longevity needs to be secured. And as such, the abbot will be making sure that happens. Hello Mr. Ed on the I think it was the third box you checked an separated an the box that had around five to seven cells in it . I was just wondering that box that had the queen in it should you have checked that box to see if she was making queen cells again with that many bees that was in the box . You may have off camera or something but I was just thinking . I sure want some of those double screen boards just have to save up $. Thanks for the update. Thanks
Emergency cells are found only in the box without the queen. If by chance there was a queen cell in the box with the queen, it would have been a swarm cell which I would have seen when I separated the boxes. But because the board was place in the hive just 7 days prior, there was no chance of swarm cells being formed. When you get your boards, you will see just how easy they are to us, and effective as well. Thanks for watching. God's peace Kathy. Mr. Ed
It really is a personal choice. Heck, I run all screened bottom boards, but if I had it all to do over, I'd use solid bottom. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace David. Mr. Ed
I was just about to say why not just split it immediately because you would still get the field bees returning to the other hive.... and as I was commenting that out I heard you repeat what Charlie said... which is funny, because my name is also Charlie! I would be scared to death of removing the queen cell frame from the middle of the hive. My luck I would damage the cell.
It does take a bit of practice removing the cells, and I have ruined many of them, but it does get easier the more you do. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Charlie. Mr. Ed
I wish you could do a video explaining all the 'special' words you use. Where does the nectar come from? What's the difference between a split hive and a super hive. There is a lot more but I can't think now, you just said emergency cells, what is that, thousands of??????????????? Thanks

I was watching a guy who has a massive bee company, they truck the bees on a truck to like Apple groves ect in California.. The sad part is one farm has the bees to work his grove but the next farm over puts out fertilizer out for his fruit that ends up killing so many of the bees.. I dont see how come they don't have a better communication system or something. . It was really sad ..
There are so many tragic stories about bees that are being used to pollinate orchards out west, and the troubles come back with the bees when they return home due to the stress that was induced while away. I'm just happy for our bees here at the abbey they are not placed under those conditions. Thanks for watching. God's peace Sissy. Mr. Ed

You left loaded queen cells in the first bottom box which you moved to the top spot. Are concerned that top box will still swarm?...or after the field bees return to the bottom box, you think the nurse bees will destroy those queen cells?
There is always the possibility of the old queen still swarming, but as I was not sure which box the queen was in, I simply covered the spread and placed cells in both boxes. Whatever happens I am ok with it, sometimes you just have to take chances and go for broke. Please understand, that is my philosophy and I do not recommend anyone following it unless they are willing to take the risks. I heard that if you put empty hives out in an area frequented by wild bees, when they send scouts out looking for a new home, there is a good chance they will move into them on their own, so you won't have to buy them. This may not be such a good idea if you live in an area with killer bees, though.
Very true, and I set swarm traps every year catching about 20 swarms a year doing that. If you get more than 2 emergency cells, would you treat them like swarm cells and break them out as a new split? Or is the risk of a weaker queen from emergency cells better to let the strongest queen win?
Each beekeeper can chose for themselves weather to scratch emergency cells they deem "inferior." Since I have seen with my own eyes beautiful queens emerge from smaller emergency cells, I leave them all alone and let nature run it's course. As long as I have queen cells in the box, it's good enough for me.Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Hi Jeff, we're in Autumn in Australia now. Harvested my Honey. It tasted like medicine, and would numb your tongue. The bees have had flow frames for the whole season. (6 months) They didn't do a single thing with them. I even wax coated them. I believe the medicine taste is from weeds. Not enough flowers around and the bees went to the weeds and clover. I think I need to move them to another location. What do I need to do in Autumn to prepare for Winter? ( Remembering Aussie winters might get to 0°c if you're lucky where I am) I was called to a Bee removal in a tree at Emu Plains near me last week. The home owner wasnt sure what he had. They were EUROPEAN WAPS!!!. HE asked me to euthanasie them. I have a powder in a blower to do that. I suited up knowing the bee suit just aint enough protection. I was swamped by wasps. Flying into my vale HEAD BUTTING ME, one stung me through the top of my hat. Another got in the vale and stung me under my beard. A 2nd got in and was stuck in my beard I managed to squash it through the vale with my fingers. My head, and beard still hurts 4 days later. Ill take a bee sting any day over a European Wasp.
Hey Steve, great to have you leaving a comment. I hope you and all your girls are doing well! What a shame to have medicine tasting honey, especially when you are looking forward to the sweet tasting stuff. Personally, I always remember that the bees make honey for themselves, and they really don't care how it tastes as long as it can sustain them. Still, I'm sure there is someone out there who can appreciate the taste of medicine honey and will think it's the best tasting honey they have ever had. Finally, I agree, I'll take a bee sting over a wasp sting any day of the week. Keep strong brother, God's peace. Mr. Ed
As I know nothing about bees, I just wonder why you lost a quarter of your hives? Is it normal to lose bees every year and are there various reasons for these losses? Just wondered Jeff. Nice to be watching another of your videos.
It is natural attrition. Every beekeeper loses hives each year, but by making splits we can recover the losses and move forward. Glad to have you watching, thank you for that. God's peace Mary. Mr. Ed

The separation that the board creates between the top box and bottom box is essential for the formation of emergency cell. Unless there is physical separation from the queen, an emergency cell will not be made, and because the bees can still touch, a propolis trap is not thick enough. Also, a separate entrance for both boxes is necessary to further facilitate that separation. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace. Mr. Ed
The queen does not mate with drones from her hive. She leaves her hive and flies to a DCA, drone congregation area, and mates with whatever drones are present there, up to 18 times over a period of a few days, and returns to her hive never to leave again. That is is she is not picked off by a bird or other predator on her way back to the hive. Thanks for watching, God's peace Gene. Mr. Ed

As we have huge ponds all around the property, as well as multiple sources of standing water, along with the fact that bees forage as far as 5 miles from their hive, additional watering holes are not necessary.I agree, and for a very simple device, it produces extremely high quality beeswax. @@JeffHorchoff Thank you, love the videos. My goal is to increase hive numbers to 100 by next year. I'm at 25 right now. I have boxes and comb in front of my garage and a swarm just came in from somewhere 30 minutes ago. Some boxes had comb and some didn't. Of course, they chose a box with no comb! I quickly fixed them up with eight frames of good comb, quart of sugar syrup and a pollen patty.
I hope nobody sees this and plants privet. It should be illegal to sell it. It’s highly invasive. One of the worst plants to crowd out native species. Bradford pear is really bad also. The bees like them.
Privet is all over our area as are the Bradford pear, but because it is such an important flowering plant and vital to the spring build up of our bees, I love the stuff. Of course I would NEVER plant it. Our tallow is another invasive, non native species and also our largest source of nectar for our honey, but I would not plant that either. As all beekeepers primary goal is to keep their bees alive, taking the honey that they bees need to survive would serve no purpose. To avoid that situation from happening, any honey that is taken from the hive is always surplus honey. And how can you determine what is surplus? For me, here in Southeast Louisiana, my bee hives consist of 2 deep brood boxes which is where the bees store their honey, pollen, and unhatched bees. Then, when a nectar flow is going strong, a third deep super is added to collect additional honey which is not necessary for the bees as they have sufficient stores in the lower 2 boxes. All our hives go through the winter with at least 60 pounds of honey to get them all the way through till the spring. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. I'm with you on that account 100%. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace John.

I’m with you both with retirement. People have approached me wanting to get me back to work and I tell them I didn’t retire to go back to work!😂
Once retired always retired. Ain't it grand to bee in that number! Thanks for watching. God's peace Connie.
Mr. Ed
I’ve never purchased a bee. I think learned more doing removals than I would have buying nucs. Now that I’ve got bees, i just graft or split from the bees I have. Low risk high reward investment
I love your philosophy, it's the same as mine. God's peace brother.

This one goes right in to the save pile. Thanks Mr. ED and Charlie
Delighted to hear you found the info useful, you made our day! Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Early video Mr. Ed. Worth losing a little beauty sleep though. 🤣🤣🤣 God’s blessings Brother.

Wonderful to see the bee population has increased this year! Hope to see those emergency cells bring out new queens next video. God Bless you both!!!
It really is awesome how strong and healthy our bees are this year. It will be about 3 weeks before I revisit the yards and at that point I will see if we have mated, laying new queens in our boxes. I'm praying we will. Thanks you for your blessings and for your support. God's peace Phil.
Mr. Ed
Thanks for posting these videos. I don’t have any bees but learn a lot just watching
That is so cool that even though you don't have bees you continue to watch, thank you for that. It is my pleasure to post these videos hoping to share my joy in keeping bees. Thanks for watching, and until the next one, God's peace Marc.

Charlie does an excellent job of video for you!!! I’ll bet when he isn’t filming he also helps with the hive work. Love you both. ❤
I'm a blessed man to have such a talented friend who does not mind at all in sharing those talents with me. Plus he's a great fisherman as well. Thanks for watching. God's peace Beverly.
Mr. Ed
Very cool video all the way around Jeff. Great explanation on how you do splits.

P.S. just to like you know the sound of that rooster is music to my heart ❤️ God bless u Mr. ED and your Bees too!!!
Good morning Doris, and you are correct, seeing all those bees and queen cell is a beekeeper dream come true. I will think about retitling the video. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Wow! Look at all those bees. I'm loving those screen board splits. Peace!
It certainly is looking really good early on, let's just hope the bees can maintain this pace. If so, and nature cooperates with a good nectar flow, we will be in the honey! God's peace Jeff.
Mr. Ed
You two are a pleasure to watch, in my second year now. Starting out with 4 hives and I got done putting up my 7th swarm trap this year.

Great video, looking forward to the update 👍👍
Hey Jeff. Theoretically couldn’t you have placed the queenless colony on the original spot like you did and then placed the queen right colony on the new spot instead of using the double screen again. Seems like it would have accomplished the same thing and you wouldn’t have to move it in the future. Of course this method will work but this was just a thought.
Oh I guess Charlie had the same thought I did lol.

Mr. Ed. What temperatures are you waiting for to open those southern hives?

Who is the monastery’s backup bee keeper? Is there a succession plan?
First, thank you very much for your generous gift, it is greatly appreciated. Second, I find it your question very interesting because on Friday I had a conversation with Abbot Gregory about that very subject. As of right now, there is no back up beekeeper or succession plan. However, because the Abbee Honey program has developed so much over the years, it's perpetuation and longevity needs to be secured. And as such, the abbot will be making sure that happens. Of course he and I both agree on the help and reliance of divine intercession.
Mr. Ed
I was about to make the same remark as Charlie.
What kind of bottom board should I use in north Carolina
It really is a personal choice. Heck, I run all screened bottom boards, but if I had it all to do over, I'd use solid bottom. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

I wish you could do a video explaining all the 'special' words you use. Where does the nectar come from? What's the difference between a split hive and a super hive. There is a lot more but I can't think now, you just said emergency cells, what is that, thousands of??????????????? Thanks

do you ever provide emergency queen cells to other beekeepers?

Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Sofia.

( Remembering Aussie winters might get to 0°c if you're lucky where I am)
I was called to a Bee removal in a tree at Emu Plains near me last week.

By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Dan.

@@JeffHorchoff thanks. I enjoy watching your videos and will be looking for new ones. I was down in Texas visiting my son in law and his brother. They are bee keepers as well. They were having trouble grafting queens due to the Jasmine.
Time to get BEEEZY! 😱😁🤪🤣👍👍🇺🇸
We have been beezy...for the last 2 week. Fortunately, there is a small break before time to get our honey supers on. Thanks for watching. God's peace Terry.
Mr. Ed
So some of the cells that look like drone cells might be queen cells ????
The emergency cell is ALWAYS bigger than a drone cell, but it may fool you at a glance. Thanks for watching. God's peace Ray.
Mr. Ed
You dudes are awsome! Bee nice to win a million ounces of honey and just pay for shipping A?
How do I get in on that great deal. I bet Charlie knows how. Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to watch. Until the next one, God's peace Richard.
Mr. Ed
Instead of going through trouble of making screened boards maybe just use a propolis trap between boxes
Mr. Ed
If the queen comes from an emergency cell & is then is mated in this hive, where does the drone come from.
Mr. Ed
How you was have some many bees in battom box and not have brood in there..I mean so little brood
Trust me, there is lots of brood in both boxes, and each box will become a new hive in just a matter of days. I have been using this method of growing bees for over 15 years now and it is VERY effective. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Tang.

Filmed the day after my birthday.
Happy belated Birthday, I hope you had a great one! God's peace.

Jeff, you often forget to bring something. Why don't you make up a checklst of things you need to take with you?
That's what Charlie is there for, and he tells me the same thing. God's peace.

By the way. I will be flying over next week to collect my milion😂 dollar winnings. 😂
Charlie will be waiting for you at the airport. God's peace Evan.

If they need water why I haven’t seen a single beekeeper offering them water?
As we have huge ponds all around the property, as well as multiple sources of standing water, along with the fact that bees forage as far as 5 miles from their hive, additional watering holes are not necessary.I agree, and for a very simple device, it produces extremely high quality beeswax. @@JeffHorchoff thanks for answering Mr. Ed! ✌️
What a coincidence, I got coffee and Mr. Ed just open up his last video! It's going to be a great day!!...even though they are calling for a foot of snow by Sunday....Ah, New Hampshire...thanks for sharing Jeff! As Karen Thurlow has said in her presentation @anchoragebackyardbeekeeping, video at th-cam.com/video/XH94XPDp1Z0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8Nmclm8kBYtDiHa3, Give the bees the resources, eggs and brood of the right age, and they will make queen cells for you.
What a great time to be a beekeeper, early spring when EVERYTHING is busting out. God's peace Brice.

Dont the bees get into your bee suit under the edges of the jacket? I wear a full suit and even wrap tape around my ankles, because they get in there and come up your legs. Ive have it happen may times. No more. I tape up and do everything possible to be fully protected.
Sure do, but not that often. I have been wearing a bee jacket for over 30 years now and it's the best fit for me. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them.

Our tallow is another invasive, non native species and also our largest source of nectar for our honey, but I would not plant that either. you don't feed them but you take their stores that they need to survive the winter
One thing your operation is missing, youth. Highly recommend you incorporate some young mentees in your videos. Remember it’s all about you passing on these techniques.
Whenever the opportunity arises to include young beekeepers, I readily take up the opportunity. As most of my work is done during the day when most are at school, the opportunity presents itself rarely. However there are instances when it happens as evident in the video link below. Thank you for the reminder and I agree, it's all about passing the torch. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother.

@JeffHorchoff Jeff is also teaching international bee keepers like me in Australia
The youth could also watch the videos distance learning etc
Youth: how about 4H, or Agriculture class at area high school. Wood shop to come out on hive construction & repair week. Even Summer School or home school groups. Alternative high school.
@@ggerkits882this is a great idea! Do schools still have wood shop? Building hives would be a cool project!!!
