This is the same method I use, though without the air pump. Cut a longer carpet tube to just under full length and the bed can be de-aired in one pass, works a treat.

i liked seeing what a soft sided bed looks like. but my bed gets huge bubbles i wish you could have a bed that is really full of air.

The air comes from the water itself when the water heats up. It also comes from the chemical reaction of water to your waterbed conditioner.
Why does no one in the US sell those burper floating valves any more? Not enough profit, I would assume. :-(
