- Let's build a electromagnetic piston engine. I received this engine kit as a Christmas gift and I've been waiting to put it together until the Economy hit and miss project was completed, but I didn't have quite enough time in the shop this week to make that happen. I hope you enjoy the build of this interestingly designed little engine. I was impressed with the build quality of this kit and the outcome. Thank you all for watching and commenting.
Another fun video. Nice gift. I can make two suggestions. 1) Best way to time solenoid motors is by adjusting the switch to turn off, just before top dead center. The solenoid has little affect at 3/8 extension out of from the solenoid body so the turn on point is not as critical. 2) I highly recomend light oil. As you know WD 40 (bulk) is what i use on my motors. Air tool oil is also highly recommended. Air tool oil does not gum up much. I make a make a 50/50 mix of WD 40 and air tool oil that works well for low power motors. Thanks for posting the video. CMW
You're exactly right now that I think about it, it can't pull if it's too far away. The 50/50 mix also sounds like a good idea too. Does it separate in the can or does it stay mixed? Thank you for sharing your experience with me/us. Thanks again buddy, keep up the GREAT work on your engines and videos!
And I love that first run feeling
I think of it as their way of patting you on your back and saying thank you 👍
nice video, could you do a review on the V35 bergmeister from stirlingkit, theres no review of this engine yet on TH-cam, would appriciate it❤😊
I would love to do a video on the v35 engine, but unfortunately I don't own one......yet. I did do a video on the opposed twin bmw style engine though (pretty awesome little engine). If I do manage to get ahold of a v35 you can be sure that it will absolutely have its own video.
@@steam212that would be so nice, Thank you for your nice reply
Would be an awesome chilled build or a father and son/daughter experience.
It also shows caring from loved ones can be so awesome with lower budget but thought put into it
I couldn't agree more with you (on both points). It was a fun relaxing project and a needed break from the frustration that the economy engine has been. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Great subject, great video! I really appreciate you sharing you're upset with a problematic project. It's a real thing! I feel ya! I'm in a "big" project I have to take rests on waiting for parts and inspiration. I remember the Microcosm H73 took ages to perfect and I've never got my Cison Vtwin running right, I think it needs a new piston & cylinder. I sppose I should do that before it is discontinued, like the L4. (Still think your L4 project is the best)
Your H73 is without a doubt the best running one I've ever seen Mr. Thomas the time and effort that you've put into it are commendable to say the least. Some times it helps to shelf a project for a bit and look at it with a fresh set of eyes and a clear head. They discontinued the L4? Keep up the great work and videos 👍
Keep up great videos
Thank you for the encouraging comment Engineman. I'll be sure to leave the shop door open for you to watch anytime 👍
someone get this man a new mug!!!
That damn mug has been through so many projects, sat on the bench through so many videos, and held many gallons. Just to rattle off the edge, spill it's contents on the arbor press, land on its side (unbroken at this point) just for me to kick it (in the struggle to save it) into the arbor press and effectively crack it in the end. When the Economy engine is done and running properly I will have to break out a new one and train it 👍
Not bad!
😁a change is as good as a rest so they say. Now you have had a rest, when is the Economy coming back?😁
I've been working on it a bit today, so let's see how it goes this week and hopefully we'll see it done this week.
Love it, very cool and quiet. Does the solenoid get quite hot?
The more that I've ran it the quieter and smoother it has gotten. To my surprise the coil doesn't get hot at all it may get a bit above room temperature but not at all anywhere near what one would think. It's only powered by a USB phone charger so it's power input isn't too great to begin with. Great question, thanks for watching and commenting 👍
@@steam212 yeah, i guess it's only 5volts. I remember when I was younger passing 12volts thru a coil and wondering what it got so hot..... Then realised it should have only been 4. Oops!
This is really sweet! How do you think the speed control works? Does it just supply more power to the solenoid through the switch causing a higher "kick" and thus faster rpm? Or do you think it's really actually supplying pulses at a higher frequency? This engine is very cool- and great video too!
It is DC powered so I would think it is just supplying more voltage to the switch, but it could be allowing more amperage through instead. That's a great question, I'll need to put the meter on it and see exactly. Thanks for asking and watching 👍. I'll be sure to let you know.
@@steam212 that would be amazing! I’d really love to know. It’s crazy to think that nothing more than a harder kick (from more power) is all that is needed to increase the rpm. Mechanical systems like this are just so fascinating! (It’s also too bad this engine seems to be sold out everywhere- you got a sweet gift from your kids!)
Hello buddy. How have you been? you seem to have the winter time blue's. I'm sure it will pass. I remember those day's in Michigan where I was born, raised and ran wild until my illness's took me
out of the ability to work and the cold snowy winters got to me and my wife and I decided to move to Arizona 15yrs ago. Talk about going from one extreme to another. Now I don't know what's worse the 120-125 degree summers in the dessert or the cold of winter in Michigan. But anyway this is a cool little engine that can basically run all the time. Maybe if you have the time you could design your own V-8 version of this type engine. Completely machined and built by you. I would love to see how it would be. Have a good one and talk to you soon.
Hey Chris, it's great to hear from you again. It could be the winter blues or the constant head scratching and frustration from an inanimate man made object (Economy engine). After work it's always relaxing to go to the shop even though it takes a few hours to get it warmed up. If I get it done this week I'll be sure to include some of the frustrating setbacks that this project has presented me with. I needed to work on something else or throw it outside into a snowbank. I've been working on it today and I hope I'll be able to share it with you and everyone else in the next video.
Is there a link for this???
