- A guide to understanding filmmaker and theorist Sergei Eisenstein's 5 methods of Montage using Star Wars and other films as examples. These concepts were developed during and shortly after the Russian Revolutionary War and the creation of the Soviet Union, and they continue to have a large impact on film making today.
The 5 Methods of Montage:
1. Metric Montage - Shots in a sequence are cut by their absolute lengths in relation to one another in a sequence.
2. Rhythmic Montage - Edits are made according to the contextual movement or action of a sequence.
3. Tonal Montage - Shots are assembled according to their contextual lighting, color, material and graphical qualities.
4. Overtonal Montage - Occurs when a sequence utilizes metric, rhythmic or tonal montage in conjunction with each other.
5. Intellectual Montage - Creating a visual metaphor / highlighting an idea through the intellectual meanings shared between shots within a sequence.
Amazing explanation and great editing. I really appreciate that you used high quality images from the soviet films. These videos tend to use over compressed images from the soviet films and this really make justice to the work of soviet filmmakers.
Ya, it's often difficult to find good sources for these films, though it's absolutely worth it if you can.
