With the invention of the kiseru, one can choose between two fates:
1. Getting beaten by the tobacco pipe
2. Cancer from the tobacco pipe

Only cigarettes posses the high cancer rates. Methods such as pipes and cigars have the same cancer risks as drinking hot liquids. That puts at less than 2% or .2%. The difference being you don't inhale the other products like you do cigarettes.

The Katana was a sidearm, it never was the main weapon of the samurai in battle. It was ceremonial more than anything and only became romantized during the Edo-Period when they didn't actually have to fight in wars anymore.

I went to the local martial arts store to find a Kiseru, but they didn't have any. Luckily there was a smoke shop next door.

I read that Tobacco pipes were earliest used in Japan in 1570, however the Japans trade with the europeans was in 1543, so when was the kiseru actually brought to Japan

if you have played Ganbare Goemon aka The Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES) you've seen this weapon in action
Note that the sword wasn't the main weapon of war at pretty much any point in history. Main weapons were things like pole weapons, bows and at some point even weapons using gunpowder
A sword back then would be like a pistol today: a side arm (meaning either backup, or for everyday carry). This improvised weapon does fill a similar purpose though

Why they would use weapon
I wonder if ninja ever used it. Cheap and inconspicuous, perfect spy weapon.
Most ninja rarely had to fight, but all sorts of improvised and concealed weapons were used by the public and ninja alike. Iron flutes, the tonfa, nunchaku and kama all came out of the need for easy to carry, cheap weaponry, many adapted from farm implements.
