    A summary:
    1. Try and practice over and over again
    2. Be passionate and entertaining, also educated by reading about many things.
    3. Be you.

    Shannon, as a fellow broadcaster of many years, I just want to tell you that everything you say in this video is spot on. People, listen to the man when he says it takes practice. Two ways to practice... go slow and take forever to finally sound as good as Shannon, or get obsessed and practice in the shower or in the car. Practice so much you suddenly realize it's the 5th time in a week you've been caught "talking to yourself." Parrot a line, or just a few words, that you hear someone with a professional voice say. But just when you're starting out. If you keep trying to talk that way 20 years later, well, it just sounds weird. You'll find YOUR voice at some point.Finally when Shannon says be entertaining. I want in give my description of that that actually means. Not entertaining like a comedian or a singer. But as a speaker! And you do that in several different ways. Vocal inflection, body language (yes there should always be body language going on when you're speaking. Even into just a microphone.) Loosen up on your nervousness or uncertainty and just act as if your a master at controlled immaturity. Have fun! Thanks Shannon for the video. After a few decades doing this, I still love it!

      It's amazing that I created this video nearly 3.5 years ago and everything I say in here still holds up. Thanks for sharing your insight on this! It will definitely help those who check the comments and are looking for a little more advice. Where have you been doing radio and for how long?

    *How To Become A Great Podcast Host*
    I wish there was a bit of magic dust that you could sprinkle on someone and say, "Look at that! You're an amazing host!" Unfortunately it doesn't happen like that.
    Being a great host of any type of media takes work and fine-tuning your craft.
    This video is intended for podcasters, but really applies to anyone out there that is trying to make themselves better everyday.
    *Share this post with a friend* who is over-thinking their own process and needs a little bit of encouragement today! :)

    Great video man, really like how you go back in forth between being a radio host and hosting your own podcast. I'm dabbling into podcasting because of my love for the radio and woukd love to be a radio host but my career path is taking me in a different direction so podcasting has come about as sort of a hobby to scratch that itch I've always had.

    • @ShannonHernandez

      Keep scratching that itch, my friend! And let me know how else I can help!

    Thank you for this video! Very inspirational, I was actually born three months premature and with all the medical issues I did have - I ended up with a more raspier voice which as I got older discouraged me because a lot of people I’d encounter would point it out. I decided to do a two year broadcast journalism course after graduating from highschool and it was great. I loved the photography portion and use that a lot more and have now started up my own podcast. I’ve only done three episodes so I was curious on ways to better myself and came across your video so thank you. 😊😊😊 This will for sure inspire me to continuously better myself and not feel so discouraged because of my voice.

    Great tips for podcast hosts *****. Also for HOA hosts! Practice, practice and practice again. I'm sure I can do more practicing to hone my HOA hosting. I'm also glad you mentioned using your passion and enthusiasm and convey it through the microphone. For an introvert, like me, my enthusiasm isn't always out there, even though I feel it. I'm still learning how to tap into the energy required to make sure that enthusiasm shines though. Thank you!

      Thank you so much for watching this, Denise Wakeman! I'm glad that those tips will help you! I know that they seem simple enough, but I had to really sit down and think about the things that trip people up when they are hosting. Most of the time, it's not giving the right amount of time to making a show entertaining!
      The good thing is that I don't believe we will all be the _best host ever_ when it comes to any type of show. The goal is to always grow and learn and figure out your own craft. Also, being deliberate about your love of the game or passions. We see this type of stuff everyday in mainstream media. For me, I see it in the music industry with people who are passionate about music. Why can't all of us on the internet model what these people are already doing?
      Keep working away, Denise! You're doing great and it's always a growing process! You will *ALWAYS* have my support and encouragement! :)

    I’ve been pulling the pieces together for a music-based YT channel. Last night, as I got all the music for episode into Audition, I couldn’t stop smiling, because I love the music so much and can’t wait to share it in my own unique way. Shannon Hernandez I may have hit a snag on licensing. I thought I had read a while back that I could buy a license similar to broadcasters that would allow me to play copyrighted songs. Not so sure at this point. It might require a rethink on format.

    • @ShannonHernandez
      @ShannonHernandez  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't post licenced music on TH-cam. They'll take it down. If you play music on a podcast, you'll need to make sure you have the license handy, but it can get tricky. Especially if you're submitting to Spotify. They're very picky with music in a podcast a d hosting services are generally against licensed music in podcasts as it violates those terms of service. But it's worth looking into.

    • @MiataTravels
      @MiataTravels 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming that I WOULD be able to buy a blanket license, I plowed into this project, and I’ve done hundreds of hours of research and thought. Assuming that my initial assumption was wrong, I think my research may still work for a different approach. I’m going to investigate fair use for talking about music recordings rather than playing videos with songs embedded. A different way to go at it, but I may be able to scratch the original itch and satisfy my passion.

      I actually offer that as a service. It's called an aircheck. It can be a bit pricy, but I'll give you feedback on what you think is your best work and share with you the areas you need to improve upon. You can visit my site and scroll to the Calend.ly section to see what it costs for an aircheck: www.theshanman.com/pages/workwithshannon
      They are pricy due to the fact that you're basically having an audit done on your program. I realize it might be out of your price range, but I would stick to this channel for tips. Also, if you have questions, ask me and I'll throw them into a TH-cam video.

    I was watching an interview on TH-cam where the interviewee was a podcaster talking about podcasting. Now despite the interviewers professed interest for the subject it was more then obvious that he had little knowledge of it, had not prepared for the interview and was not paying attention to what the interviewee was saying. Result was the entire interview was carried by the podcaster with the interviewers stumbling in with mistimed question, often with vapid statements.

So if you want to do it all on your own, I actually encourage you to do it that way. Morning shows on radio have a team and they are put in place for a reason. In podcasting, if the co-host doesn't see your vision, they are just there to ride the coattails. You are the creator of your destiny, my brother!

How to structure in the show. On my TH-cam video sometimes I tend to rant and go off on some other craziness. Oh yeah, man. Journaling helps you out so much. It also allows you to go back and look at where you were in the headspace. Sometimes you get some of the best ideas through journaling. As for organization, stick with me because I talk a lot about structure of podcasts and the reasons why we have structure. I create a specific structure for podcasts to not only allow the podcaster to stay more focused on the topic, but to also create opportunity for the podcaster down the line.
