  • In each weekly episode of mailbag I answer photography questions from around the world. Ask me a question here in the comments section or on any of my social media outlets. Add the hashtag #AskMOTT and I'll feature my 5 favorite questions every week.
    5 Questions in this episode.
1.) How to find a mentor?
2.) How to pitch your work to editors?
3.) Are good photos and a compelling story enough to get published in a major newspaper?
4.) Are photo agencies and collectives still relative?
5.) Do do you really need to use a uv filter?

Thanks thanks thanks so much for this video! Not a lot of editorial/commercial photographers sharing like this. Very encouraging!

My pleasure, that's the goal of my channel to share tips and advice about editorial and commercial work along with a few reviews of gear I actually use :).

Thanks thanks thanks so much for this video! Of all the different photographer fields it seems editorial and commercial are the hardest areas to find advice/guidance. Encourages me that I was already thinking along the lines of most of what you’ve said here. It’s a real life process to achieve the dream. Been binging your videos. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Justin. Great mailbag. Thanks for sharing. I have taken classes that have cautioned us not to use UV filters as protection because it adds another unnecessary piece of glass that the camera has to focus through and it can cause interference with the quality of images. I have heard this from other photogs as well. This prompted me to remove all my UV filters (even the high end ones). Since you use these filters regularly, have you experienced any degradation of your images as a result of having a UV filter?

Thanks for your question Vernon. I’ve heard photographers say the same thing you mentioned but I’ve used UV filters on all my cameras for my entire career and never had any issues. They’ve also saved a few of my lenses though the years.

@@vwatkinsphotography a good UV filter is always my first buy with a new lens. People are out here publishing and printing iPhone photos. I think we will be ok with a filter. If you like to use your gear in the real world throw out the lens cap and get a uv filter.

Don't slow down. The concentration of content per minute is so sky high that none of your videos I've watched felt like a time wasted.

You’re in the minority there Vlad, my most consistent comment is slow down :)
