A dam flooded family's mill home. They found hidden ruin to fix

  • As a child, Maria Chillida made some of her strongest memories with her father, reputed sculptor Eduardo Chillida, at the water mill home that he had restored like one of his sculptures. When the government expropriated the home to build a dam (despite a fight from the family), Maria committed to find another mill to restore one day.
She and her architect son Jon Essery Chillida spent 10 years searching for another watermill that they could restore to create a place deeply embedded in its environment. After receiving hundreds of responses to their ads, they found an abandoned mill compound down a long dirt road that immediately felt right.
When they purchased the property, water ran directly under the house to power a turbine at the center that both turned the millstones to grind flour and to power the house. Unfortunately the permit to deviate water under the mill was only for purposes of grinding flour on an industrial scale, so Essery began to reimagine a home that still respected the natural flow of water here.
Over the next several years the family restored not just the mill but the accompanying stable, chicken coop and hog house into a gathering place for extended family and friends. The original stone was preserved, but much of the old wood had to be replaced. Essery used locally-milled pine to create light and airy spaces.
The old turbine still sits at the center of the house (now the pantry) and the wooden grain hoppers are stored in the hog pen-turned garage. Essery tried to re-permit the mill, ultimately without success, but he believes that one day the mill could run again. For now, the family is happy with a home in direct connection with the river.

I love that the design and decor is minimalistic: simple lines, the natural beauty of the wood. What a comfortable space and beautiful location.

Really loved the history behind the search of this mill and why it was so important for his mom to find another. And what they've achieved and how beautiful it came out is nothing short of miraculous. And what an amazing gift to be able to have a compound like this for the whole family to use, enjoy, and create more lasting memories for the whole family.

I *almost* skipped over the search history/story bit because I wanted to see more of the home. So glad I didn't skip it! I agree with you--that history explained so much of the home and its details and made the tour they gave afterwards so much more meaningful. Excellent storytelling by Kirsten and/or her editor.

Thank you so much for the beautiful tour of this converted mill, now named Chillida. All of the elements added to the old mill are so spectacular. From the pine wood, original rocks, and the hand made doors. The most amazing feature of the main home is the door, with it being partially open for light to moving the slats for security or weather. It is a fantastic place for family and friends to gather. The "hotel" is very charming and would be comfortable to stay in. Everything in this estate was well thought out, making this old mill quite functional. It was so sad and horrific what was done to the first mill home. The town or state could have found some where else to put the damn in. We can hope they were given a fair market payment for it's demise.

Gorgeous property and renovation of a historic structure. I did wonder though if there were any recorded big floods being so close to the river and that large cliff. So sad about how the family lost their former mill home. Even before it was revealed, the way the narrator used past tense sounded if it was gone now and I thought immediately of a dam.

The force of water is unbelievable strong then. If this happens here the whole compound will be destroyed in very few minutes.

I am affraid to imagine the cost for that real estate...😮 Since it is not only the house - it's a 'plot' of land. Land property always costs (as well as in the long gone past) a huge amount of money. And the state-of-art design of the house costs extra funds to create a fairy tale. And to maintain all this in the state of novelty is another chunk of cash. I sincerely wish luck to its owners. It definitely worths that, because this demonstrates that you achieve every time new hights and do not rest in your oars. Art is a progress in all terms.

We are such an unorganized- impractical - inhumane race, with a long entangled global history where governments are at the reins of local jurisdictions. Here's a perfect example where local needs were corrupted. I can hear the conversations in my mind, as local legislators are directed not by reason or a historical tradition, or the historical significance of a family run mill. Same all thru Italy where each region had their own facility to crush grape harvests. Then comes transnational interest such as Nabisco,Nestle, Coca-cola, and they pay with bribes to shut down local cottage industry . Same as the disaster in the Amazon, with cattle replacing billions of acres of precious forests
