Limitani Spear Wall is OP. You get the spear wall and an arrow defence upgrade from the blacksmith, and you raid the enemy base like a boss without worrying too much about TC arrowfire. The only way the enemy can hard counter you is by going for man at arms. Down the line you can have them build fire spitting rams, pair them with a company of mercenary longbowmen and finish the game.
Amateur question here: why is the golden horn tower not good with the hippo build? What if you want to go for aggro cavalry stuff but want to take advantage of mercs at times? Like it's not because you didn't go with the oil build that free additional mercs aren't good?
I think the point of this build is to do damage basically as quickly as possible. Flask landmark make the knights more powerful immediately after building the landmark. Golden horn tower is not as aggressive but probably good for a stronger mid/late game
@@danethenice Yeah not denying the strength of the flask for this specific purpose with cavalry. I was wondering more in general I guess. Is there no uses where the merc tower is good with hippodrome? Feels like it's arbitrarily funneling all following landmarks into two exclusive branches idk
@@valence686 Mainly because it's over time. This is about zerging. You can do hippo and tower, but by doing that you're sacrificing extreme early game aggression with the flask/cataphracts for weaker early, stronger mid. Think of it this way (arbitrary numbers): This build = 10 aggression, 7 mid game, 5 late game (relatively). Hippo+Tower = 5 aggression, 10 mid, 7 late game. Kind of. The thing is these numbers are relative to each other, not absolute. Meaning merc build (relative to this) might be 15 mid-late game etc... So the way it goes is, if you're not capitalizing on your strengths, you're losing. Same reason why you go 2-3 TC China/Abbasid for example. Their villagers aren't slower/worse that you need more, it's the opposite, they're very fast, good, and cheap. So you capitalize on it. Same thing here, your Cataphracts are very very expensive. If you don't have flasks, their deaths will HURT. And if you pull them back? Better make a monk and wait for ages for them to heal up. They cost like 300+ resources, or 6 villagers (realistically around 4 vills). If you do not kill any villagers, then you need to delay 7.5 villagers for one total minute, or 3 villagers by more than two minutes to deny your opponent the same resources you just used. You can see how expensive they are. There are scenarios where this build might not work, like playing against civs with hard counters/strong units? Maybe OOD (Don't know). I can think of Abbasid for example where they drop a couple of camels, with spearmen, and some archers. These three units are purely food/wood, so no gold. That can be used to get composite bows, and hp/armor/dmg techs while you spend yours on units. Abbasid wins that trade, so maybe you want to lay off this build. Then again, I haven't played them, and maybe cataphracts are broken still. Just my two cents.
@@valence686 there's probably many useful builds with the tower and hippodrome to be discovered. You can always take inspiration and come up with your own unique build. Maybe the supply ability from the hippodrome is op when you use it with an army of keshik mercenaries. Maybe it even works on tower elephants.
I really love this build but sometimes i faced ppl that spammed spears and horses. They outnumbered me even with cataphracts running into my base. How to deal with this?
byz was so hard to play, not impossible, but so hard to figure out how to be efficient. ended up feeling like mediocre player because of it. Thanks for this guide beasty!
Any advice on Byzantine mirror with this build? I beat my opponent on timing and started getting horsemen out first, but they picked Keshik after seeing my longbows at their base. Poor little bowmen didn't have a chance.
Tried the build today in a 2 on 2 situation and crushed my opponent. Thanks for giving some orientation on how to start getting a hold of the new civs. I do love the japanese asthetics but for the moment feel like they re underperforming. Something seems to be missing. Maybe a charge ability for samurai or something to play around with like with all the unique abilities of byzantin units.
was the mill in cistern influence in this vid? looks like one tile out to me? asking for my own reference, can it sit just outside the influence (adjacent?) or does it have to be one tile inside it?
To get the research buff, buildings would need to have at least one tile inside the influence. However, in this case, Beasty was using his first cistern for the army production buff, so the mill didn't need to be within the influence area.
Thnx for this build Man - on challenges with hard computer i use Grand Winiary and Rose tower and spam Limintanei plus contract long bows and choku noku plus my own Archers then i add elephants and Katarfrakts plus sige weapons and he shits him self. I use tactic that one way leadiong to my base i blocked by my army hididng in forest ;) and grow till i have enough force to swipe him out and out class enemy by ageing up ;) and bring Grand Colubrines !
Build horseman spear/spear archers, scout to see if and when they stop producing, so you can age up accordingly. Also scout feudal landmark so you know whats coming. As for dealing with cataphracts, my best guess is spears or camels if available, but i dont know how good theyre gonna be in combination with triumph, so we will see
man. did you have to make the first guide for the thing i want to do. Now every match i play is a fucking mirror. I go play some japan and make some fucking ninjas or ill try some jenny

Cistern landmark should give wall or tower buffs. Or other defensive buffs

What kind of build do you go for to make Limitani? Still Hippodrome?
@@Sheriff723barracks
definitely winery to get olive oil faster for the longbowmen, triumph won;t make sense if u have no cavalry@@Sheriff723

Look at the value he got from flasks and triumph how can you argue?
Isn't merc building dead weight in midgame? Is it worth it to delay ageup with berries and spend 150 wood just to pump out 1 single squad of longbow?
UPDATE I DID THIS AND WENT FROM BRONZE TO GOLD2 IN A FEW HOURS 6/7 WINS THANKS
I just got clapped by this build......... its was soo good
ERE is really versatile and I like how they didnt shy away from showing some more antiquity looking units
Its Byzantines !
any link to a written build order?
I would like to see the Grand Winery build from beasty
I really love this build but sometimes i faced ppl that spammed spears and horses. They outnumbered me even with cataphracts running into my base. How to deal with this?
Graduated from the school of Beasty
I saw hippodrome is not buffed by the cisterns
Seems like the new season also improved the mouse sensitivity. I have the same problem like the 8:10

Sorry, but you forgot about the most important step of this build order...by not taking purple color !!

i had several mirrors, don't underestimate your limitanoi (spearmen)
Cataphracts look strong, but their charge does little damage and is easy to avoid. Any thoughts?

He tapped out with a 18 to 3 military “advantage”… that should say something how broken the Cataract is 😅
That's it ❤😅
Ahahah the healing is sooooo broken on the cataphracts . I hope I don’t face this , but I’ll use this !

Guys, does anyone know a counter to this push? I cant afford the DLC, and I dont wanna get dented in early game
