    A lot of the recent upsets are reminders that those former dominant champions of the early and late 2010s are getting older and a new generation is creeping in. Always sad to see the older generations leave but I’m excited for the future.

      "Average" fighters are getting so much better, this usually happens in sports, as it evolves and more and more people grow up in the sport, you see less dominance. It's why the best baseball teams only win about 70% of their games, and that's extremely elite, most years there isn't any team with a .700 win percentage. Even the "bad" teams in major league baseball are really good, they can beat the best team on a good day.

    Its not popular but i think Strickland v Izzy is. There is a million arguments against but the fact that Sean's defense was exposed vs Alex and Izzy is one of the best strikers ever made it so shocking that Sean pieced him up. No wrestling, no clinch, just straight striking. KO's and subs can happen from wrong place wrong time but getting beat at your own game for 25 minutes is unreal

      sean was trained before the fight by alex. Alex wouldofc address the issues sean had against him and show him izzys weaknesses. Everyone forgets that even though izzy won the rematch, he won from a desperation overhand right that landed. He was getting destryoed worse in the second fight that he was in the first. Alex simply has izzys number and sean implemented what he learned training with him.

    No one ever talks about little Nog losing to Sokoudjou, that by far is one of biggest upsets. Sokoudjou was a guy no one ever heard of and was literally 2-1 with 2 wins over nobodies, while little nog was a top light heavyweight at the time going 11-2 with wins over guys like overeem twice and hendo, and then when they fight, not only does sokoudjou finish little nog (who had never been finished before) but does it by knocking him out in under 30 seconds. Definately in the top 5 upsets, if not, the #1 upset for me

    • @ypsilonick8738
      @ypsilonick8738 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can blame this one on the punchers chance. A guy as strong as Sokoudjou just needs to connect one good angle and it's light's out.
      I personally find it much more upsetting when a champ gets decidedly beat, and its just clear that the other fighter had a more skilful performance (see Nunes or GSP)

    • @BiggieTrismegistus
      @BiggieTrismegistus ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ypsilonick8738That's true about the puncher's chance. The amazing thing about Sokoudjou is that he followed up his defeat of Lil Nog by beating Ricardo Arona. Having wins over those guys 5 fights into your career is pretty damned impressive no matter how it happened.
      I was just looking at his Wikipedia page and he also has a win over Jan Błachowicz too.

    I remember Renan Baraos face in the first fight after the second or third round looking to the guys in his corner, he was totally lost, and would have done whatever they told him to do it was like he could not believe what was going on. I bet he just never learned how to lose, so much of his life and formative years were spent being “the guy”….that great winning streak ended up being a sort of curse.

    • @BiggieTrismegistus
      @BiggieTrismegistus ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'd never thought about Barão not knowing how to lose and I think you're onto something. Until the loss to Dillashaw he was considered one of the best fighters in the world and looked like he had a chance to go down as an all-time great. That one loss not only derailed his career but also seemed to erase everything he'd accomplished up to that point. It's kind of weird in retrospect.

    • @madgavin7568
      @madgavin7568 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@BiggieTrismegistus It explains what happened afterwards, Barao attributed the first Dillashaw loss as fluke and when they re-matched it showed in Barao's performance as he didn't look any better than last time, it was very much a repeat performance from Dillashaw.
      Barao's confidence was completely and utterly destroyed by what TJ did to him, and even when he wasn't fighting TJ from then he had poor performances even against middling competition, losing more often than not.

    The way I see it, what I do to measure and evaluate how big of an upset a fight was, is that I imagine myself going back in time and telling past me the result; how I'd respond. That's why I think Gonzaga v Cro-cop is the greatest. I was ten thousand percent sure Mirko would come and dominate the UFC, I was a pride evangelist and couldn't shut up about the talent in Japan. I hyped up everyone I knew to watch it and told them how superior and more taxing and higher level the grand prix system was, kept saying his fight with Fedor in 2005 was the greatest fight ever, taught them about the Left Leg Cemetery stuff, showed his face off with the Axe Murderer and the KO... and etc...
    If I told past me not only the result but also how it would happen, past me would laugh present me all the way to the psych ward.

    9:32 no way. He had 4 fights in the ufc. FOUR. He won 2 by decision. And 2 by submission.
    Anderson had the belt around his waist for 2,497 days. He had a black belt in BJJ 4 years before Weidman’s first pro fight. His best win was against a Maia who lost to both Anderson and Muñoz already. The latter being one of Weidman’s 4 UFC wins. you’re being affected by hindsight. There’s no way any fighter was confident Chris would win. They may have wanted it to be true. But getting a decision win vs Maia isn’t proof of anything substantial.

Nobody should be able to make a Philly shell work in mma, and parrying strikes is insane when you can get a kick launched at you from the same side, but Strickland makes it all work and has some of the best defensive stats in MW, gave Izzy a crazy low accuracy stat

    Sean vs Izzy, Sean got the fight after beating an unranked guy, nobody belived he could win or even tought of a way for him to win outside of maybe grappling, people only wanted the fight for seans trashtalk and sean got beat by two guys adesanya had already beaten.
    And then he dominated (trough striking) the greatest striker currently in the ufc that was on his way to become the MW goat. And the argument that izzy already lost is bs, he moved up unsuccessfully and lost to alex in an upset then KO'd him in the rematch.
    Sean didn't get lucky, izzy wasn't off he won it trough pure determination, mental toughness and focus. Also sean about 9 months ago said he doesn't think he will ever be champ and will fight lower ranked guys for money. Godbless

    I feel like it isn't justified to call Pena a fluke win. She had the right gameplan and fought a fight that Amanda never expected cause Amanda probably thought it would be a foolish endeavour on Julianas part. She grappled with her, then got in her face and pressured HARD. Amanda has cardio but she only does manages it well if she can control the pace of the fight, and Juliana saw and abused that. It wasn't a fluke, cause it wasn't luck. It was smart.

    Great video. But you seem to think bookies choose their odds based on past performances. They don't. Their odds are based on how much money has been bet. So if a fighter is -600, it means a lot of money has gone on that fighter and the bookies are trying to limit potential losses. And if more and more money goes on the fighter, the odds go lower and lower.
