Apparently this cartoon is especially popular in Sweden and has been part of a regular Christmas special that's aired since 1959. The one year they didn't air it, public outcry insured they never made that mistake again.
Nope. He wasn't. Look it up. It's one of the very few moments when Walt himself voice acted before he couldn't anymore from the damage smoking had done to his voice. They talked about it in a tour I took on Walt Disney while I was in Disney World in Florida.
Bless this book for providing exactly what I wanted to read to my child. All children should learn to be themselves and not be afraid of being thought cowards if that means loving peace and a gentle existence. Isn't it surprising how little this cartoon has dated? A masterpiece!
Agreed. It's also a subtle questioning of whether or not we even need bullfighting in our arenas. Ferdinand the Bull wanted more out of life, and bullfighting was not what he would have wanted for his life.
The men entering the ring at 4:09 are supposed to be various Disney artists , in fact, the matador is supposed to be Walt Disney Himself while the guy behind Him is supposed to be animator Ward Kimball.
This won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short. It beat out three other Disney films, including the Silly Symphony _Mother Goose Goes Hollywood,_ Mickey Mouse in _Brave Little Tailor,_ and Donald Duck and his nephews in _Good Scouts._ Also, the matador is modeled after Walt Disney. I guess the animators were being a little cheeky.
@@iagoluiz8467 When Ferdinand the Bull passed away, he would have been buried underneath his favorite cork tree among the daisies and flowers he loved so dearly.
I wish ferdinand the bull, Bongo the circus bear and his girl bear Lulubelle from Disney’s fun and fancy free were in disneyland Paris and Disney magic kingdom app.
Hey - just realized a visual joke at 1:51! Narrator earlier said Ferdinand sits under a cork tree, well look at all those wine corks hanging there! LOL! Except that in real life the corks are made from the bark of the tree itself, they don't grow like that :)
I do like this a lot and I like how closely it adapts the short children's book, but I feel like the 2017 movie captures the message of the book better with Ferd being so kind-hearted and meek while always helping the other animals and making sure to show kindness to the bulls who were jerks to him and he inspired kindness and selflessness in others.

That's a good one. Bullfighting should be banned in every place because animal cruelty is wrong. That's why I don't like the humans in this Disney video.
I remember being a military brat and my parents took me and my sis to an authentic bull fight when we moved to Spain.. when me and my sis seen what real bull fighting was we didn’t like it. Til this day I feel it’s cruel , but I’m not from the culture so I could just be bias.
As a Spanish, I confirm that more and more people in my country is against bull fighting, and they understand that it's a cruel and brutal tradition. I just hope one day soon the bull fights disappear here in Spain. About Ferdinand, I must say that this was veery ahead to its time.
You're not biased and you're not alone in thinking bullfighting is really animal cruelty masquerading as sport. Many cowboys also risk serious injuries and death when they compete in rodeos where they try to not fall off either a horse or a bull, although rodeos and bullfighting are two very different things.
Ferdinand’s the only fricken smart bull... the others wanted to fight? Do they realize what actually happens to bulls in bull fights? Yeah they DIE 😑 Ferdinand didn’t ask for that crap. Deep down he knew...
True. Many bulls who end up in bullfighting rings don't survive and Ferdinand wanted to live long enough to enjoy smelling the flowers underneath the cork tree and possibly be a daddy for his own calves, which refer to young cows and young bulls.
Yeah, especially with the other characters being introduced from Bobby Canavale as Valiente to NFL legend, Peyton Manning as Guapo to Anthony Anderson as Bones
The original book was great. I remember seeing this "movie short" when I was younger......although that was when it was already 30 plus years old. Just hearing the name "Ferdinand" instantly brings to my mind a mental picture of him under the cork tree sniffing flowers. I can't even begin to recall how many times it was read to me by my parents, or I read it to myself or to my brother, or I read it to my kids. The new movie is really cute and it brings the story off the page for a new, younger generation. The voices are well selected and the music is good. I recommend having the kids see all three versions: watch the original movie short and read the book and then see the new movie. Talk to them, have them compare the new and the old. Yow will probably be surprised by what they notice! (And having grown up where crossing the pasture made for a 20-25 minute short cut when I wanted to get to the local mini-market was a reality, I was always well aware that a bull can move fast - size is deceptive! You never attempted the crossing unless he was on the other side of a really big pasture and the wind was not in his favor. And you made darn sure he could not smell you or hear you! The thing I find interesting is if you humanize the bulls, they're little boys who like to play rough. But Ferdinand would be the exception; he's the sensitive little boy that the adults wonder about (i.e. whether or not he's gay)
"For all I know, he is still"... so he could have just ended up at the butcher shop? Sort of like how old dogs go to the farm? Its seems unlikely that they would pay thousands of dollars for him and then just set him free. Childhood books area really different when you read them as an adult.
Mama Cow: Now, Ferdinand... why don't you play with all the other little bulls and buck your head? But Ferdinand would shake his head. Ferdinand: I like it better not having brain-damage, and not being betted on and ultimately killed in a rodeo ring, Mama. Also with this color palette and style, it looks like it would fit in right with the movie, Pinnochio... even though that movie takes place in Italy instead of Spain. Makes sense, because this was before Pinocchio.
Agreed. It's also possible Ferdinand wanted to live long enough to be a daddy for his own calves, which refer to young cows and young bulls, and he understood that bulls who are put in the bullfighting ring don't have a good chance of surviving long enough to be daddies.
