The toothpicks were not to scale, hence your problem with the joints. If your posts were 6x6 inch post full scale (152mm), the joints would require a 3/4 inch (19mm) pin. The same post to 3/4 inch scale would require the pin to be approx 1.25mm, not the 2.0mm toothpick. Superglue rather than glue gun?
