    Watching you enter the lock, it appears you were tending to over steer helm, not allowing the boat to respond to your input. Was glad to see you used the throttles to help steer the boat. It's always a bit stressful while learning.

      At low speeds the helm is about useless, just use the shifters like you did at the fuel dock.

    The rudder does a lot more than you think it does at slow speed. Your rudder was hard to port entering the lock, watch your video. Make rudder center before twisting

    Don't forget!!! Instead of steering with the wheel you can steer with the engines and throttles! It can actually be easier than the wheel.

      Bow thrusters are not common on dual engine boats

    I found out the hard way many years ago on a twin diesel trawler, to always lower the throttles before shifting or risk wiping out a transmission. Best wishes for smooth "sailing".

  • @paulmach5
    @paulmach5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You MUST return throttles to idle before shifting. You will destroy your transmissions in no time. All a big learning curve

    • @TheBoatingDiaries
      @TheBoatingDiaries  ปีที่แล้ว

      Current really caught me off guard. Yes I will keep the transmissions in forward and idle up on the throttles to steer in a current like that

    There's no current - you had the wheel hard to Port.

    I enjoyed this video and subscribed. You all passed my house. I'm between the Franklin lock and the Ortona lock. The Franklin lock operator that came over the radio is becoming famous with all of these looper videos. Every time I lock through going down to Fort Myers I have to joke with her about that. Safe travels.

    Thank you for the video's, I'm looking forward to seeing your trip through the Loop and learning more about how your boat behaves.. And keep us informed on the upkeep if possible.. I would love to be able to do the Loop as so many others, and I see this as a learning opportunity for me and others through your video's.. Hopefully the SeaFoam fixes the oil pressure issue, It could also be a bad oil sender relay..? After a few oil changes that would be my next goto.. Best of luck on your journey through the Loop..

      The loop is just the start ! Iv got a gulf crossing to Mexico planned, down to south America, crossing the Panama canal etc !! Take this boat around the world

    That oil pressure is definitely better. In Yanmar engines, you may want to do a manual flush of the oil coolers. When you use a Seafom type detergent, the sludge tends to accumulate there. Once you get that cleaned, and it will be some serious cleaning if the previous owner wasn't taking care of it, you should be at 30 psi at idle.

    • @TheBoatingDiaries
      @TheBoatingDiaries  ปีที่แล้ว

      mmm. I wonder how to flush the oil coolers. ill have to look at the engine. The starboard engine is still high. this boat was sitting for a few years . yes it was repowered with these new engines 21 years ago ! I think it was sitting for several years.

    Never use the wheel in close quarters. Use only transmisions, in and out of gear. You are oversteering. Careful adding throttle, usually don't need to.

    Thanks for sharing. Can’t tell if you have it, but a rudder indicator is gold in tight quarters. Not saying it is the right way, but whenever I lock or dock, I make sure my rudders are straight well before entering….from there I never touch the steering wheel. Only shifting and throttle levers. Can do a complete 360 on my axis in a crosswind as long as my rudders are straight. Trying to use shifters, throttle, and steering in tight quarters has never worked out for me. I’m just not that coordinated.

    • @TheBoatingDiaries
      @TheBoatingDiaries  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rudders at that slow of speed don't normally work well . When the bow started going towards port when I entered, I should have just throttled the port engine up to bring it back straight . Current really caught me off guard. Thanks for watching!!
