The key is the combo of public and private. Private being the insurance companies that are growing paying customers and float, and a great underwriter, and Warren as the investor of that float. Inflation has helped the mkt and franchises.
Just think of an analogy of a business your in that can do it similar?

@@michael2275 Mediocrity with no risk of bankruptcy. Just because Buffett doesn't do it doesn't mean he's wrong to recommend it to others. Buffett can beat the market, other people can't, so he recommends others just buy indexes to invest and not risk losing money to a single company's failure.
I think the year of this interview was 1987 or early 1988 since they reference Black Monday as just happening.

Thanks for uploading this video as I've always really admired Warren Buffett. Best couple of things I learnt from Warren was to buy index trackers e.g. S&P 500 and having a good good temperament as an investor. My wife has a much better temperament than me - she invests in index trackers and good stocks and just leaves them. My temperament isn't as good as I like to keep on "Poking" my investments. She always does better than me even though she invests in the same trackers. I'm not so convinced about value based investment these days though. I've analysed companies that seemed to have been undervalued with consistent revenue, profit and equity growth and they carry on to perform badly. Bit puzzled about that one!
He made most of his money first managing other people's money (i.e leveraging other people's money). Good luck working a 9-5 and investing to this level.

During the 8 years of Reagan's presidency Berk's stock Rose 1000%, those sorts of increases haven't happened since.
In the past 16 years the stock has only risen 350%, but, of course that's still a wonderful return. 😊
I think Berkshire really hasn't done so well with the tech stocks in the past 20 years, except for Apple in recent years.

I agree with Warren Buffet. A blend of different ETFs is my favorite way of investing. For example, you could have some covered call etfs for dividends and other etf`s for growth. A combination such as : JEPI , DIVO , QYLD, SCHD and JEPQ. You have to combine them according to your own personal situation. I tallied my dividends for the previous year; $102k. Blessed, grateful, disciplined and focused.
Consistently investing in high quality dividend paying ETFs & stocks over the long term is a relatively easy strategy to create generational wealth. My "boring" ETF's portfolio paid me over $4,000 in dividends last month
Anyone have recommendations for a reliable monthly investment? I hope to ultimately supplement my income from work with a monthly income from investments. I will still make long-term investments, but it would be wonderful to have a little additional money each month.
Bear and bull markets offer great opportunities. I used to discredit people who made money in bear markets until I did it myself. The US stock market is currently experiencing a long bearish season but if you zoom out it's actually a bull run as the market always comes around, so it's understandable that people are panicking. However, there are opportunities if you know where to look. With the help of an investment advisor, I made over $250k in profit last year.

Buffett sold out before Salomon went under. Was a short term play for him. He was a white knight investor who saved Salomon from a hostile takeover by Ron Perelman. Salomon sold Buffett convertible bonds only available to him, which were very low risk. He had to make money on that deal.

While Warren Buffett was self-made, he did have some advantages growing up the son of a politician and stock broker. He did inherit a helpful amount of money, though nowhere near the enormous amount that he created with to his own hard work and determination.
nothing comes from the working class.. Buffet earned over 6 figures working at his first proper job with all his dads connections etc - most people will never earn 6 figures in their twenties. Nobody else gets family friends putting in a combined £1m into your non existent financial hedge fund either. It is still impressive but turn buffet into a working class kid with no family connections, there is no Berkshire

I think his first well paid job was Ben Graham’s fund? He is a very smart guy. He was already a very good investor back then. He was Graham’s top student. He was refused the job at first, and yet never gave up and kept pestering Graham til he got the job? Yes, not so many would get that in his early/mid 20s. But would they really deserve it?

The other lady was his wife's good Friend and his wife actually told her best friend to start taking care and date Warren.
His wife actually left him to live in San Francisco and asked the other lady to take care of Warren Buffet. In short, she gave up on him and endorsed/set-up the new relationship. Weird huh.
