Worked for an excavating company like that. Machine would come back out with a fresh half ass paint job and everything else still leaking oil and F’d up still!
An Uncle had the same engine, he did a few mods to it, like a computer tune, different injectors and turbo and exhaust mods on the stock engine. Pulling a heavy backhoe up a long grade one day, it began to lose power and started knocking and smoking very badly. It finally quit. He had it towed to a performance diesel shop, and they found the crankshaft was broke in three different pieces. That Callies crank they are using looks very interesting.
@@korn111685 see that's what i was wondering. So if I'm going to buy a Duramax... it needs to be an l5p if I'm going to go for over 600 horsepower... is that the gist of it?
It is much easier to install the camshaft first when the engine is completely disassembled. You can reach into the upside down block to guide it into place.
This is the manufacturer recommended way of cleaning the deck, but they really should have done it before bringing it to the machine shop. That way any sanding particles could have been cleaned. You can't really deck these blocks without opening a whole can of worms.
LML cranks are junk, a goal of 1000hp and even a brand new LML crank is sketchy at best. Reusing a stock crank, especially LML, is just asking to pull the motor again. And no one with half a brain would install a new crank into a Duramax without checking line bore and line honing at minimum. Not uncommon for them to get line bored.
This was a not a lp5 duramax which came with much better internals than this duramax did so that's why other people get way more power out of stock duramaxes
I like the fixture that he uses with the dial bore gauge. I am so used to seeing people holding the dial bore gauge directly to the outside micrometer to calibrate it, and I have no idea how that can possibly be accurate. I was surprised to hear that the .001 inch of clearance for every 1 inch of crank journal rule still applied to diesels. I'm so used to seeing wider clearances on everything diesel, because of how much more pressure it puts on components when compared to gasoline engines.
Why did you attach the torque plate with head bolts when the engine will be using head studs? Seems like that would defeat the whole process since bolts distort the block differently than studs.
PLEASE do a video on the Ford 3.2 Liter Powerstroke!!! do not get confused with the new 3 liter, I wanna see big numbers with their older 3.2! It was the lowest powered engine offered in the Transit from 2015 to 2019. It is a 4 stroke inline 5! Stock 185 HP and 350TQ. I have dreams of buying one and dropping it in a car to drift, but I financially will never get to see that itty bitty block turn into a pocket rocket diesel. One of the smallest diesels Ford ever made, and has a TERRIBLE reputation for its power output. For the low price and size, I've always had the biggest hunch it could be a power house if the stock turbo was upgraded, FI played with, and a solid tune. I would sh*t and giggle to prove my friends wrong on the 3.2!!! Please do a build on it!!!!!

Do any of you ppl ever answer questions that can really help "Joe American" w/ his truck issues ?? I have a 1999 Ford F-150 w/a 5.4 V8. I understand the aluminum heads are very thin where the spark plugs thread in. That's why I've had 3 spark plugs already blown through the threads having to be fixed w/helicoils. I understand they can't be fixed twice. Solve this problem for good. Questions : a) do you know of this problem ? b) do you have a recommendation you could share ? c) are there aftermarket or other heads available that don't have the same problem & could fit this engine ? Thanks for your generous consideration, Steph (Stephen Boeker) Leesville, LA
Its actually been proven already that those Elderbrock heads do basically nothing over stock heads. I think it was like 10hp more? Was either Gale or DuramaxTuner that tested them.
You wouldnt ever slide a non roller tip piece of tool steel on a journal, thats the easiest way to scratch it. Final wipe down of an engine to clear it of machining oil is done with soapy water, and when its clean, then its oiled.
Why would you pay extra for the Denali trim and then take it off? Plus the clearance lights and blacked out taillights are pure rice. It is a GMC truck not a mid 90s Honda Civic.
I agree with you on the clearance lights but how the hell is blacked out taillights on a truck rice? Personally I prefer clear aftermarket tail and headlights but black is still better than the ugly red/orange markers on the factory ones
See I have to interject the LML and the LP5 can take what you put on it, The Lower in will hold of the fine. If you don’t believe would you believe Gale Banks Mr. Diesel Himself has put together the PL5 only changing the Cam and Push Rod Assembly, topped of with a Turbo and Super Charger Dino out at a mere 7000 RPM as he was trying to blow the Motor and couldn’t. Ask him either that or watch the Video showing the RPM. I agree with you on the rebuild but to say the lower unit won’t hold. It not a 6.7 Ford or the Cummins 6.7 both have some serious issues.
I remember seeing a product that it's a paint but the oil runs off it so the oil returns to the pan faster and keeps the oil off of the motor making it easier to clean. I can't remember the brand or name of it so I guess someone's going to have to Google hahaha

Happy to see more diesel episodes , be interesting if they did more different types of everyday Diesel engines .

Why would you send an engine to the machine shop and not have them at least clean the deck surface?!?!?!?!
Because usually in the diesel world you DONT need a professional cleaning
This is the manufacturer recommended way of cleaning the deck, but they really should have done it before bringing it to the machine shop. That way any sanding particles could have been cleaned. You can't really deck these blocks without opening a whole can of worms.
I came here to say the same thing. Thought for sure the machine shop would deck it. Guess not with diesels. Learn something new everyday
Machine shops definitely resurface diesel blocks.
I love watching their shows.
the next episode will be them rebuilding the transmission and the rear axle, to handle the upgrade of that hp the engine now put out
Not likely on the Ford. Its the same 6R80 that people are using with supercharged 5.0 engines, and they seem mostly problem-free.
Just painted my new engine last night...
Went with VHT's "Cast Iron". Man...it looks killer.
Everytime I watch your guy's channel, it gets me through my day
Unless you go aftermarket main caps or you’ve spun a bearing, line hone is overkill and not necessary but to each his own. Crank is overkill too.
If you're changing from main bolts to main studs then a line hone is necessary as they torque on the caps different and distort the caps differently

Slap a factory duramax badge on it. Less is more
so are those still technically 4 bolt mains? or is there another name for them since the other bolts come in through the side?
I think some people call them "Cross-bolt mains" to account for the bolts that enter the sides of the bearing caps.
I like the fixture that he uses with the dial bore gauge. I am so used to seeing people holding the dial bore gauge directly to the outside micrometer to calibrate it, and I have no idea how that can possibly be accurate.

only use the soft plastics that are in the sale box, or the 1$ bin

won't the turbo cause heat problems because it's in the valley? like the BMW's that had that problem
