Good question! Manual differentials are used to further detect specialized types of WBCs and abnormal cells like blasts. Some automated differentials are able to flag a sample if they detect abnormality, but manual differential and flow cytometry tests will likely be needed to identify the abnormal cells and count the number of blasts.
I am Thallaseemia and in cbc machine my report detect (blast?) in wbc message WBC were 2000 normal range is 4000 i am very scared ? Please REPLY if possible
Hi there! Blasts cells are normal when they are in the bone marrow at levels of around 5% or less of the total cells. However, it is not normal to have blasts in the circulating blood. If you are worried about your lab results, you should contact your doctor.
Thanks for the good information
Are blast counted /ditacted in automatic cbc??..or only in Manual.. / under.. microscope?
