Norma Shearer: The Untold Hollywood Scandal

She had a luscious, melting quality about her. I can't get enough. Love the vintage tv's too.
The Divorcee (The Women) is in my top fave movies. There is something about Norma, when she's on screen you can't take your eyes off of her.
Unforgettable as Marie Antoinette especially the scene with Tyrone Power in the last scene it was heartbreaking.
A truly great actress and a great lady.
I've watched "The Women" 1939 probably more than 100 times. It's amazing.
@@CarolMortensen-e2b I just watched it last night...for the tenth time! What a great film.
@@CarolMortensen-e2b Oh me too! Love that movie!!!
Ditto! And love, love the clothes.
Me too, and I agree!!!
@@CarolMortensen-e2b which part did you want to play?
when talkies came in Miss Shearer was Hollywood's 1st great actress, The Divorcee, A Free Soul and Strangers may Kiss where just soar of her great films, and there is no scandal
My favorite of her films was Idiot's Delight. Also my favorite Gable performance.
Yes, she did her best. Just like Crawford, Davis, et al. They scrambled, did what they thought would get them more on-screen time in more movies. They were the best of their time. They're the part of history that occurred at that time.
Great actress...
Wonderful lady ❤ Ahead of her time ❤
Scandal? I must have missed that part 😊❤
@@thomashankins569 apparently, that part remains “untold”.
@@MarkMaciag-dz9gb 😁❤️
There was no scandal.
@@thomashankins569 she married someone who was outside of her religion. That could have been scandalous in the twenties.
She was fab in the movie "The Barretts of Wimpole Street."
@@SherryHill-k5y So beautiful in that film ❤️
@@jacquelinelewis3131 Yes she was!
She was great opposite Fredrick March.😊
@@michaelgeorge595 Absolutely!! Can't remember who played her father ( Laughton?,) but man he was wicked! Loved the maid-- she sort of floated in that dress.🙂 But Shearer was beautiful in that movie.
probably my favorite performance from Norma Shearer, even better than The Women though I love them both
HER country? Norma Shearer was a Canadian. She might have become an American citizen but, she was Canadian.
I hate it when videos of actors or actresses use the wrong clips which don’t match the narration. For example, there are no men in The Divorcee, yet they show up during the df the film. Happens throughout.
She married the studio boss.
@@Mrrossj01 She married Thalberg, an underling of Louis B. Mayer, the studio boss. But, yeah... He helped her tremendously.
And Tallulah Bankhead couldn't steal him away!😅
The first film name is The Women
My favourite movie of her is Marie Antoinette ❤. I use it each school year with my social studies students 🎉.
I think the truth about her career is somewhere in the middle. Was she a good actress? Yes, but I doubt very much she would have had the career she had without Thalberg behind her. Whrn you compare her with the other major female stars of the 1930s she seems way down the totem pole. It is not acting ability that is the problem, it is stage presence.
Norma Shearer had star quality in spades. Remember: she often fought her husband in fighting for roles she wanted.
Shearer could be incredibly good despite the old silent film gestures and dramatics occasionally slipping in - the last shot of her in The Women comes to mind
@@haintedhouse2990 I always laugh at that last scene!🤣
@@HeardYa lol as do I.
She mesmerized on screen.
The original Sex in the City
The robot narrator is terrible.
Did not think she was that talented. Marriage certainly helped.
That must hve been the "scandal".
I thought she was born in Toronto but google say's Montreal....hmm...
Mary Pickford was born in Toronto.
0:26 that's Toronto not Montreal
Mary Pickford was born in Toronto, Norma Shearer was born in Montreal.
These old Hollywood actresses are beautiful and not to mention also how they wear sexy dresses.
She does have her moments occasionally on screen…but mostly not a very good actress…more a “Hollywood Star”…(thanks, largely to Irving!!!)
Didn't she date Mickey Rooney when he was eighteen?
I doubt that 'dating' is the word.
@@jeffpagan7735 Who didn't? Lol
Repetitive.
0:27 Montreal, huh? Try Toronto.
Norma was born (11/08/1902 video incorrect 10/08/1902) and lived her childhood in Montreal. She was educated at Montreal High School for Girls and Westmount High School. She suffered from the collapse of her father's company in 1918 and the family became impoverished. In January 1920 Norma and her sister with their mother moved to New York. (Canadian Encyclopedia ; Wikipedia)
Mary Pickford was born in Toronto.
World War 👁 👁?????
Plain looking Norma Shearer.
bad channel
She Very unappealing
Tastes differ.
When you see the photograph of Shearer at age +/- 50 years: how badly she had aged, how awful she looked!
Jeez, who doesn't look "awful" when they get older? You've got a lot of learning to do. Better get at it.
@@evelynenders3144 aging comes to us all, cosmetic surgery, botox, fillers and other abominations were not available or to the same standard as today. I applaud women who accept themselves exactly as they are, the alternative to aging is ... what? Creepy, waxy, blowfish lips, or death?
What a nasty thing to say!
And you'll look so much better...
And no one will even care.
that's what people look like when they're not obsessed with morphing into a bloated fish-face. i'm guessing you'll take that route based on your tacky comment. older actresses now look like freaks. Faye Dunaway comes to mind.
I never thought she was a beauty, I did think she was a good actress but not particularly attractive, actually rather homely.
