    Dear Matt Rice, Great review. I just wanted to point out that your information about the Rokkor lenses not having any anti-glare coating on the front surface element is correct, however, it's important to note that all Minolta Rokkor lenses had at least a three layer or more anti-reflective coating on all air-to-glass surfaces starting in the late 1960's. Also, anti-glare coatings do reduce sharpness where as anti-reflective coatings do not. Minolta Rokkor lenses had at least a 3 layer anti-reflective coating which does help reduce reflections and some glare. This is based on the literature that I read at the time (1973) when I first bought my Minolta SR-101 camera with the 58mm f/1.4 MC Rokkor PF lens and later my 28mm and 200mm Rokkor-X MC lenses. You can tell that a Rokker lens is multi-coated when you look at the front lens and it reflects multi-colored hues mainly blue and orange. Older Rokkor lenses only had one anti-reflective coating which was only blue/purple in color with no orange, but they still had an anti-reflective coating on the front element and internal air-to-glass elements. Anti-reflective coatings were invented in 1935 and common in camera lenses starting the late 1930's. By the late 1940's, no lens sold did not have an anti-reflective coating giving the lens a bluish cast to it. If you do a quick search on Minolta anti-reflective coatings, you'll find several sources that say Minolta was the first Japanese optic to use anti-reflective coatings in 1946. The difference you are experiencing between the two lenses could be the difference in coatings or a difference in the condition of the lenses like from dirt or fine dust layer build-up or from fine crazing (scratch) marks from cleaning the front and rear surfaces too vigorously.

    I have every single lens ever sold for the SRT-101, My grandfather was gifted that camera by family in the late 60's or early 70's and Whilst the camera is no longer around we have all the lenses still in great shape for sitting for all this time. I bought another camera for him to be able to use them again. Its crazy that with how prices have gone up im sitting on like $500-700 of lenses.

    I have the PG and use it with film only. For digital using adapters, I'd use my Takumar 50mm f1.4. Never tested them against each other. Now days, I've become somewhat lazy and use the 45mm f2 pancake just because it's much smaller and lighter. Thanks for the comparison - I think I'll shoot the PG next outing on digital.

    I recently did tests between the MC Rokkor-X -PG 50mm 1.4 and the MD Rokkor-X (with the 55mm filter size) at close to infinity at f8. Both did very well, but the MC won out in the corners. I also tested the MC & MD versions of the 50mm 1.7 lenses. In this one, both were extremely close, but the MD won by a hair.

    I have the PG 50mm 1.4 that has a serial number starting at '3772', and I wonder if the glass is different, or the coating, or maybe there's dirt inside your lens, because my own comparisons faired much better against my MD lenses, showing noticeably better detail.

    Hi! I see 2 versions for the PG. One is Rokkor-X PG (the one you reviewed), but I also see Minolta 50mm F/1.4 Rokkor PG MC Mount Manual Focus Lens {55} on KEH as well. Is there a difference between that?

    • @valuedcustomer9614
      @valuedcustomer9614 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rokkor-X was used by Minolta for lenses they marketed in North America. "Rokkor" was used in the rest of the world. The name Rokkor was a reference to Mount Rokko in Japan, which was adjacent to the Minolta factory.

    • @mattpaulrice
      @mattpaulrice  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awesome! The MC Rokkor-PG is an awesome lens and I know you will not be disappointed. First of all, the 55mm filter thread is not very common so you will have a hard time finding a 55mm lens hood. I'd suggest you first buy a 55-58mm step up ring for the lens which is a much more common filter thread size nowadays: goo.gl/B6x1pw. In fact, I'd suggest you do this for all your lenses you own so you can attach whatever lens hood you buy. I prefer using rubber lens hoods because they fold up and pack up nicely when you're not using them. Take a look at this one and see what you think: goo.gl/3yaZ7u

    I have 10 Minolta f1.4 lenses from the 58 f1.4 mkI and mkII (slightly better than the I in my copy) through the 50 MC Rokkor, Rokkor-X, MD Rokkor and Rokkor-X. Of my copies the best optically speaking is the 50 1.4 MD plain (utan rokkor name) of 49 mm filter d. But the 58 1.4 mkII the funniest. If I have to choose one to use in general photography with my A7III then I prefer the MD 50 f2, it does almost everything well, taking portraits, in that case I prefer the MC 58 f1.4 it is fantastic despite its imperfections.

    Minolta used a two-letter code for the optical design of its older lenses. The first letter indicates the number of groups and the second letter indicates the number of elements. P = "Penta" or 5 groups, "G" = 7 elements. Thus "PG" = 7 elements in 5 groups.

    MC stands for multicoated? Is MD multicoated?

    • @valuedcustomer9614
      @valuedcustomer9614 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "MC" = "Meter Coupled" lenses equipped with an aperture indicator tab, introduced in 1966 for the Minolta SRT-101. "MD" = "Minimum Diaphragm" adding a minimum aperture tab, introduced in 1977 for cameras with shutter priority (SD series) or program mode (X-700). Both MC and MD lenses are multi coated.

  • @Gabez82
    @Gabez82 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    ...And actually, you have the later most version of that MD Rokkor-X f/1.4. Minolta made a larger 50mm MD Rokkor-X f/1.4 that has a 55mm Filter ring size, it was preceded by the MD you have in this video. It is the smaller one when Minolta began make their lens lighter and made of plastic, and subsequently dropping the cool sounding and looking Rokkor line.
