Subscribers since 2009 here, can't believe the journey since Emily were still so young and here we are now. And this episode really got that old Film Riot feels. Brought back some of them old memories from good old times 😍
True comment .. started following in the beginning of my career .. coming back again today after so long while driving back home today .. so proud of you guys kids are grown up now along with my career ❤
I remember a low budget filmmaker telling me one time “ it’s not what’s in the room that matters, it’s what in the frame that matters”, and this video encompassed that phrase.
I love how this is equal parts old Film Riot (Low/no budget DYI) and new Film Riot (Nice gear and awesome looking)... And can we all take a moment to appreciate how freaken great Justin's acting was??!?
Your first shot that looked like "stock footage" honestly looked more realistic to a hospital, but the final product looks more of a stylized and dramatic feel, which feels better tbh
YES! More Josh. More DIY. I think the After Effects stuff has run its course, especially since it feels like it had been dominating the channel for so long.
5:47 I'm a nurse. If I walk into a room and all that's in the room are XL gloves, I'll still use them unless I know I'm doing something that needs better fit gloves. And yes, this happens sometimes, though I'm more likely to go into a room with only S gloves. Even then, I'll still use them, rather than wasting time going and finding M or L gloves that fit me better.
This was awesome ! I build a dirty hospital elevator in my basement for a horror short and it turned out awesome. It only cost about $1000 and had some awesome functions.
As a hopeful future director and script writer, your guys videos keep encouraging me to continue pursuing my goal. Thank you for the videos you guys make
One critical thing Josh didn't mention in the video is how much shooting on a long lens with a shallow DOF enables this kind of low-budget set. Carefully framing out the background with composition, and obscuring it in the out-of-focus nether regions, lets you get away with a lot that wouldn't otherwise work... Like rug walls! But seriously, it's a valuable lesson: smart use of your camera alone is a powerful tool to compensate for DIY production design. Keeping more of the frame out-of-focus lets the audience's imagination fill in the gaps.
I just did this this weekend. I did more of an in-home hospice. Dollar store balloons for decoration. Some sort of big clock thing with beige bevels and a similar overlay in post plus some wire loom and a coiled cell phone charger cable duct taped to the back seems to have sold the effect. Now that I see this, I wish I would have used an old flat TV I have lying around but I think for at home, the small and portable monitor worked. Yep, it's all about creating the illusion.
Wow, this DIY hospital room build is incredibly impressive! I love how the creator was able to replicate the look and feel of an expensive hospital set on a budget. The attention to detail and creativity is amazing. I'm definitely going to have to check out the Aputure Infinibar, thanks for the tip!
God bless you dude! I paint, write, and have made some super small productions. I'm even really good at helping friends overcome creative hurdles. But I get nervous when I'm in charge of making a scene work. Keep it coming! Thank y'all!!a
Regarding the plant IV bags, they are drip irrigation feeders used to slowly water plants over a long period of time. I was actually looking getting similar feeders with a IV stand to water my balcony garden.
I remember watching these videos growing up going “someday” now I have 3 feature films under my belt plus a union pilot and many other movies I’ve produced. Thank you film riot , indymogul , freddiewong , Casey neistat.
there are plenty of other channels who do VFX, to me, film riot is best when it films live action practical skits, shows how to achieve an effect/look DIY and budget friendly and makes it funny and exciting! to me this is where film riot stands the most unique amongst all the other filmmaking youtube channels, they even find a way to review gear in a more practical sens than other youtube channels, respect your opinion tho G.
@@marcuscisneros8528 thank you for your opinion sir, I'm not looking for tutorials I'm looking for entertainment i know it might sound wired to some but i don't enjoy memes when I'm bored or depressed i watch filmriot i love the characters and turbulent fisplace and everything...
This was super interesting! The finished product looks excellent, and it was neat watching you walk through the different steps you took to achieve the look. I'd love to see more DIY location builds!
I think this is a great video to help someone understand the genuine article isn't always required. I feel this would make more impact if you started from scratch (minus camera and lens as this should be something people already have) and give yourself a fixed budget. This would be a lot more laborious to execute, but I believe it would drive the point home and help deliver more creative ideas.
This is awesome. Actually some hospital shots are a roadblock I was trying to work out for a short film I wanted to create, so this episode is very helpful.
This is similar to they way I built a little girls room for my short film Molly. We used the the foyer in my house because the bed rooms were too small to shoot in., We blew up and air mattress and put sheets over it. We used one of the end tables as her night stand and placed a few toys and trinkets on it. And because it was a young teen's room, we plastered the wall above her bed with posters and teen magazine photos we got at Walmart. This gave the illusion of it being a kid's bedroom.
This actually reminds me of the behind the scenes for the movie Suicide Kings (1997). Though there are some interiors that were necessary (such as a strip club, a restaurant), the production used one of the rooms of a mansion they were going to be mostly filming at already for an apartment instead of having to find one, for one scene involving two characters. They had to paint the room a different color, but no one would have guessed it was a room at the same location they were filming most of the film at. It also reminds me of the recent video documentary I saw on TH-cam called "Shine On: The Forgotten Shining Location," where the location of The Overlook Hotel's kitchen set turned out to be a part of the offices for the studio where the film was being made that they simply dressed with minimal alterations.
Love it. The thing that pulled me out of the scene was the poor kid couldn't stop twitching. I don't know if it was nerves, or just being a kid, or what, but I got so focused on him twitching I didn't even pay attention to anything that was around him.

BAMIE WHAM!
Same, genuinely wild to see how everything has evolved
Same here since 2010 and I was 10 years old then
Love the oldschool episode of just shooting stuff. Love Josh as the anchor too!
I remember a low budget filmmaker telling me one time “ it’s not what’s in the room that matters, it’s what in the frame that matters”, and this video encompassed that phrase.
Ain't nothing I love more than a DIY post from Film Riot!!!! Love you guys!
THIS is the film riot we love
I would love a series like this! You could cover castles, police stations, parties, a whole ton of locations!
That would be AWESOME!

LOVE THE VIBE OF THIS EPISODE!!!
Classics are back, I hope this becomes a series. Taking complicated sets and doing them for cheap. Idk if that's a thing on yt already
YES! this is exactly how i remembered film riot during my high school days of watching youtube
Amazing!!! I love these "out of nothing" built sets for filmmaking! This is inspirational! Thanks, guys!
This was awesome ! I build a dirty hospital elevator in my basement for a horror short and it turned out awesome. It only cost about $1000 and had some awesome functions.
I know everyone is talking about the set, but the acting in this is top notch!!!
As a hopeful future director and script writer, your guys videos keep encouraging me to continue pursuing my goal. Thank you for the videos you guys make
this was invaluable i was literally just trying to figure out how i was gonna pull off my hospital scene thank you again film riot!
Epic and practical. No excuse for low budget productions to produce high quality content. Thanks

Set dec is SO underrated and under represented on TH-cam filmmaking tutorials. This is a great and necessary piece of the puzzle. Thanks! 🙏
AAA quality as usual, another banger film riot

Great to see you Josh
This timing is great because I have recently been trying to figure out how to cheaply build a hospital room for my movie. 😂
Beautiful, just beautiful. You guys are brilliant. 🤩🤩🤩
I think the colour grade on your second attempt worked really well to sell the hospital feel
My favorite TH-cam channel
I miss the old vfx tutorials

So this is what you guys do when Ryan is buzy? GREAT!
This felt like so old-school Film Riot. Like let's-build-a-slider-out-of-PVC-pipe Film Riot. It took me back. Nice
I miss these kind of videos. Just a fun low budget diy stuff. Not even relying on VFX in post.
That was a great set honestly. Makes you want to think twice before you go purchase a location.
if i wasnt already subscribed i would subscribe great job Josh. Film Riot is back 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
Love it!
I’ve been trying to figure this out for months for a short film I’ve been writing. It like you guys read my mind!
Ok but Pirates of the Caribbean on the background monitor was an excellent touch 🤌
you guys are just the best on TH-cam. so amazing.

Joss is always a win
This is awesome. Actually some hospital shots are a roadblock I was trying to work out for a short film I wanted to create, so this episode is very helpful.
I always find it amazing what you guys come up with. And you show us how easy it can really be if you put your mind to it! Thanks, guys well done! 😁

I believe in the power of Rug.
Say yes to rugs.
You guys never disappoint! Good content
Recently we hired a hospital room to shoot. After seeing this, I feel so relax🎉🎉🎉
Cool video. It would be cool to see other inexpensive set designs.
I love how they are getting pulmonary artery pressures without a Swan Ganz line.
I loved this! Thank you
This is the film riot I know and loved! Nice video
Josh being the lead on this one is so fire
I have Learent Everything from you guys. I always love your videos ❤❤❤

Love these videos!
I think the cold blue lighting is another thing that made the first attempt feel like stock footage. The greenish yellow feels much more intentional
Good content as always ❤
Ah yes, relatable tutorials again
