I was a moderate drinker. But, I was also a consistent drinker. Couple of beers after work every evening, maybe a few more on the weekends. Never got real drunk. One day a friend told me he was quitting drinking for a week. Said if one cannot put it down for a week, that is a sure sign you have a drinking problem. Made sense to me, so I took the challenge. Quitting drinking for a week left me feeling so much better, when the week was up I decided to carry on for an additional week! The benefits of general well being, and getting so many more things done that needed doing, convinced me that alcohol was a total liability. I never did go back to it. That must have been around 1999, 2000 and honestly I never missed dropping alcohol from my life. It wasn't that hard to do either.

🇨🇦❤️My mother and brother were recovering alcoholics so I asked them to tell me if and when they thought I should stop drinking and my mother told me while we picked tomatoes in her garden.
It was a dramatic moment for me and I nodded and watched my tears drop down onto the tomatoes as I continued on with what I was doing. The best way to describe it was that it felt like a giant page in the storybook of my life had turned over. She took me to my first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting later that evening.
Alcohol had been my “friend” for about 15 years at that point, and I didn’t have to be accountable for my actions as long as my “friend” was in my life. That meant that my disregard for my own well being was somehow justified. Essentially, I wasn’t worth taking good care of, so no harm, no foul.
Sobriety was weird at first and I didn’t like it. I attended AA meetings off and on for a year, but as an atheist, the “higher power” aspect of the program wasn’t appropriate or applicable.
I stayed sober for thirty years and the only awkward aspect was the hostility exhibited by a few of my former drinking buddies, and that was ultimately inconsequential.
After my life’s major responsibilities were completed, (parenthood, career, etc.), I decided to try a sip of wine and to my astonishment, I didn’t like it! I tried spirits, beer and as many other types of alcoholic beverages as I wanted and I had completely lost my desire for alcohol!
That was ten years ago and I’m still not interested in drinking. I have beer, wine and spirits in my home, but they’re used mostly for cooking and baking. I’d rather have an iced coffee or a glass of milk or water these days.
If I hadn’t stopped drinking, I would have died long ago.

I never realised how bad I felt until I started feeling so good not drinking. I haven't tried a drink to see what my reaction would be but i have no desire to find out.

Congratulations! I never had a problem with alcohol but gave it up completely to be healthy and because of articles I have read about the bad effects of alcohol. Over a year ago I had dinner with friends who bought expensive wine and I drank some to be polite. It had a horrible effect on my brain. I am glad it happened because it solidified my commitment. I have discovered since that several of my friends do not drink alcohol. With other friends who still drink, I am the designated driver. I feel so much healthier and alive without it. I have read that one immediate effect of a drink of alcohol is brain inflammation. That can’t be good.

Totally. I used to be a hardcore weekend binge drinker, but eventually just got tired of all the downtime I was wasting on recovering from those weekend extremes (and it seems to take longer as I get older...). So I just let that habit fall by the wayside, and now I find my life generally has a baseline of more clarity, focus, and balance. I still don't think there is anything wrong with drinking, but I'm personally just not interested in it anymore. Happy that you also found new clarity and enjoyment--!

    • @BrainAcademy1
      @BrainAcademy1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

'Just not interested in it anymore...' yeah, that sums it up pretty nicely :) even though for me I've never been a binge drinker. I've become very sensitive and tuned into my brain, and I immediately feel when something is off. Just a couple of beers, or glasses of wine are already enough to get that feeling.

I think for many of us, as we get older the joy of drinking diminishes. I'm 51 and I drink far less now than even a few years ago, and its not some sort of conscience decision. It doesnt taste as good, I get hung over with far less alcohol, I hate the hangovers, I get full and tired after a few beers ect. In fact, I bought a case of beer a month ago and still have 12 of them left, just a few years ago, that might not have lasted a weekend. I have other friends that are experiencing the same thing, many experienced it in their 40s. Whiskey hangovers are too bad, for me to really drink it much any more. I still drink but its pretty much down to a few beers on a Saturday night because I dont go to the gym or work on Sunday. I just quit chewing a year ago. I think I'm becoming a mormon lol.

I've never been an alcoholic, but for a while I was having 1 drink (either a beer or a glass of whiskey) a day. For some reason, one day out of nowhere, I started on a drink at night after I got off work and immediately lost interest in it as if it just completely bored me. Poured the rest of it out and haven't had a craving for an alcoholic drink whatsoever since then. Now it's just water, tea, coffee, and carbonated water, and the clarity of mind I always have now is absolutely wonderful. I don't know what happened that last time I had an alcoholic drink, but I enjoy being sober and don't miss it.

Mental anguish, and emotional rollercoaster.....oooffff. Dealing with life without the liquid sedative is a painful wake up call. But only then do we realize how sedated we really were! I did a year sober a while back and it was the best year of my adult life. I then tried drinking "one or two drinks on big occasions only" and that quickly went right back to old patterns.
I wasn't an alcoholic or a problem drinker, just performing consistently below what I was capable of in life. I find joy in performing well at things I'm passionate about, and even a drink or two can mess up sleep, and I can't give it my all the next day.
Back sober for 3 weeks and the benefits are creeping back in. Sleep is improving, I have more emotional control, and can focus more on things I care about.
For me, it's an "either or" scenario. Either I find joy in putting my best foot forward with passions, or I find temporary happiness in a couple of drinks throughout the week and cope with being mediocre. Tell myself it's ok.
The polite thing to say right now is "everyone is different and you need to find your own balance whatever drivel" but I don't buy it. Sounds like the excuses I made to sell myself short and drink.
Be careful with going back to "occasional drinks" - it'll catch up to you the moment you're not diligent. I hope you stay sober and keep enjoying both the non-alch beers and the piano :)

Woohoo!! Congrats on your alcohol free discovery. I’ve done a similar experiment and have found the same - my body doesn’t really like it.
    Hacks?
    1. Flavored seltzer, cold bubbles to sip pint after pint and the same satisfaction of going to your fridge and cracking one open.
    2. Kombucha! Fermented black tea - my tummy does happy flips for the probiotics over the (typically) gluten packed beer

I would like to add that what you mention about feeling full of energy, enthusiasm, I get that feeling also when I go for sustained periods of time without carbohydrates. I have done fasting for 4-5 days several times and most people think I'm crazy going without food but for the most part I feel amazing. Maybe something to read about and try as well? :)

When I'm not drinking I'm so much more productive, but surely there should be more to life than crossing things off a to-do list (and I'm not sure the stuff on the list is that important anyway). I miss those lazy 'wasted' (as in wasting of time - and killing brain cells) afternoons/evenings drinking 'too much'. I wish I could find a way to disconnect and have a short break from life when sober. Mediation is great, but its hard and doesn't come in a convenient 750ml bottle. I agree the alcohol free beers are amazing, and the industry is up over 300% this year here in Australia, so I'm really looking forward to more options!

I've been off it since the pubs closed here in Scotland on October 7th. I have to say I haven't felt all that much better. Maybe it's because of the continued lockdown but I expected to feel much more energised and less anxious. The pubs reopen here next week and I'm looking forward to a few pints but I will definitely be more conscious of how much I'm drinking in future.

Great effort! I never really drank alcohol, except during my studying days because of peer pressure. Just never really liked it. Similar as smoking and all that. But from the socially induced vices towards an cup of tea or coffee, maybe small, but ultimately the same questions arise. There is a physical/mental reaction especially when drinking coffee that has triggered a lot of debate about it use and its health effects. The next step would be the amount of food you take, especially important in this age where so many people are obese. In the end the conclusion could be that every type off food has its effect it is possibly only the quantities you take in. Anyway, the discussion on this subject is not finished....my brain tells me I have other things to do.....

I'm 59 now and quit drinking back in '98. Drinking was becoming more of a habit than an occasional libation. So I quit drinking and bar-tending and started over with a nice job working at LA County Department of Parks and Recreation at South Coast Botanic Garden. 100% change in my life and lifestyle. I didn't do the "12 step program" I'm not religious and I don't crave alcohol, I despise it because of the way I felt about myself when I was drinking. Now I'm as healthy as I ever was, and don't miss it a bit. I drink NA beer around others, mainly to make them more comfortable - I like St Pauli NA as my favorite. Heineken Zero is real good and when I was in Ireland (didn't think they would even make NA beer), but they do and I found a great one, just don't remember the brand. Lastly on this, when I quit drinking, I found I was experiencing extreme anxiety and was diagnosed with depression. Now I'm trying to get off the medication... The moral? In moderation kids, moderation. My new vice? Meditation - it works!

I'm 64 days sober, and I feel like shit. Dizzy anxiety is just shitty. Don't get how people feel so amazing. Not for me. I'm still going a year regardless, but this sucks. I miss the feeling of the first beer taking away my anxiety and making me feel more relaxed. Anyway, I'm sure it's healthier, just not feeling great, and I was only drinking 8 to 12 beers a week. Sometimes over the week or in a day or two. Iunno, maybe it's just me or will take more time to feel better.

Hmmm, I stopped drinking over twenty years ago. At first, I took the traditional route. I went to meetings and subscribed to the belief systems, alcohol, lifelong recovery, and disease theory. I quickly realized if I kept thinking about drinking or not drinking, I was going to start drinking again. Because it kept the alcohol ball in play and was always on my mind by going to meetings and talking about my past and other’s struggles with alcohol. So, I stopped talking, thinking, and adapting my identity around alcohol and got on with my life. About ten years ago, I looked for answers why I didn't struggle and found neuroplasticity provided a lot of clues. Simply put, I stopped walking the same path and forged a new one. I never talked about it and lived a life without any limitations of being around alcohol and if I ever wanted to drink I would. I just haven't wanted to. I didn't drink for taste. I drank for effect. Who I am today I have no interest in affecting my reality. Have you ever read or listened to Marc Lewis?

That's an interesting point to which I can actually really relate. I obly did a few weeks without drinking but I still had a similar experience.
I tried sober oktober the first time last year an i liked it so much that I even extrnded it to 6 weeks. Then I did dry January and I also apontaniously decided to not drink in Mai.
I experienced something pretty similar to you, when I drank the first beer with alkohol again, I ould relly taste the alkohol out. It was like as if my brain told be there is something poisenous in there. It kinda felt like my tastebuds were doing a chemical analysis and sought out the bas substance it was really weard. Especially after drinking so much alcohol free beer before (I still not quite like the taste the same but as you I drink it way more today and always have alcohol free beer at home as well).
Of course after only a few weeks without alcohol my brain was "reset to default" pretty quickly and after I had a few beers it decided that I "liked" the taste again.
The brain is a scary powerful thing in such regards...

I have never had too, never even really wanted to. Yes, I will occasionally have some wine or champagne as a celebratory gesture, like at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Maybe I'll have a sip to help congratulate a person's promotion. To having it on my mind ALL THE TIME??? . . . .ummm- no.

The near beers have gotten really good like Athletic Brewing NA IPAs (who'd have thought!) and it never ceases to amaze me how I can just walk away sober and sharp after even 3 of them. Still sleeping sound, waking up early, full of energy, not stuck in the alcohol drunken spiral of giving up most of the day for pleasures instead. Experiencing the ability to have a beer and not have it set the course of your day is pretty amazing. Even with 0.5% abv (fruit juice levels) there's no urge to keep going. Often times with regular alcohol, especially after a few at the end of the week, there's this urge to keep self destructing... keeping going... just "sleep in" the next day but that sleeping in is sacrificing our free time and so is the blacking out. It feels fun, feels spiritual - but it's honestly limiting the fun, limiting the spiritual compared to sober alternatives. I've been to Belgium several times - insane levels of drinking with some wow. I have a friend there that's had a much harder time quitting alcohol than myself because of mixing with other stimulants to keep going (I like my sleep each night so not for me).

As the weak asshole I am, DID BUY BEER AND SIGARETS...after that it was as always..drinking and smoking...but i do remember the first can of beer i drank, i also really didn't like the taste all!! But I kept on drinking anyway..dumbest thing i ever did!! It is absolutely sabotage to youself, body and mind

awesome news Greg,, having been drinking non alcoholic beer for quite some time now, you learn a few things,,people respond to a person who states they dont drink differently than to someone who they think does drink,,, so I take my Hahn Zero or whatever I have that has no alcohol, and just fit in,,everyone sees me with a beer in my hand and accepts me as one of them,,,with me the only one knowing the truth of what I am drinking, unless someone asks me, and then I can tell them,it has no alcohol in it, let them try it and see for them selves that it tastes exactly the same as beer with alcohol,,, they are usually impressed and maybe down the road they will try it for themselves,,,as for the wine,,,there are some really good ones out there that have the alcohol removed and you cant tell the difference, except it doesnt have that pull to aggressively drink more,,,look for the ones that state " alcohol removed " some supermarkets have a small range, and on line you will find a range as well,,,just type in "wine with alcohol removed " , and you should get a wide selection,,, watch out for the triggers to return to the old habit of drinking alcoholic stuff and if you do, just stop again,,no need to tell you how you will feel the next day,,I accidently did it once, drank one glass before I realised, and it took three days to get over the effects of it,,never again,,ya dont need it,, oh, you will be surprised at some of the feelings and attitudes that you will have to face in the social situations ,,,as the old saying goes,,,,stay on the path, lol,,,,,

respect for 100 days alcohol free - and keep going! You know those hangovers where you swear you will never touch alcohol again? It was after my 25th birthday celebration, and I didn't drink for 10 years. I started back, and over the last years it has become a daily thing. Not alcoholic, but still too much, too often. So I am now 3 weeks into alcohol free and not missing it at all!. I set out to do 30 days free but expect I will continue as well - your video is great encouragement for that. The reasons you highlights - focus, energy, etc? Even 3 weeks in, it feels great, and i look forward to the difference 3 months in. Thanks for the video insights - affirming and encouraging!

Good question... well, this is quite controversial. A lot of scientists have tried really hard to show us the dangers of it. But what they found, was actually the contrary... Short answer: if you use it sparcely (I don't know exactly the limit, but my guess would be once or twice a month), it's actually good for your brain. Marijuana at least and Mushrooms also. They both stimulate neurogenesis and calm down the amygdala. Avoid pills in all forms and shapes (including powder). They can really damage your brain.

Alcohol does not ruin things, it is the excess of it that ruin things. Alcohol is a necessary vehicule in wine that transports aromatic molecules from the glass to your nostrils therefore allowing you to enjoy the olfactory and gustatif experience. Foggy feelings come from abuse obviously, maybe it is because of the abuse that people try to back up from it, just like people having issues with drugs. I believe that life would be soooo boring without the pleasure of 1 delicious glass of wine with friends and/or family. It makes life worthwhile without even considering that wine or other alcoholic beverages have been part of human civilization as an important cultural, social and economic factor, anyways, i have so many reasons for continuing drinking and discovering all the delicious wines around the world. All i am saying is extreme positions are so wrong and Good luck in your search.
