This is absolutely fantastic. There are so many of these cottages all over the country and they are slowly disintegrating. So few people appreciate our vernacular architecture. We need more of this, remembering and respecting the heritage of the past and yet making it fit for living in the 21st century.

    • @sixmagpies
      @sixmagpies 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Cannot agree. Most of our 'cottages' were dreadful junk.
Truly, what is valuable about this architecture apart from the lessons learned? The vernacular at the time stemmed from the necessity of tiny size and use of the cheapest possible, preferably free, materials due solely to the extreme poverty. Real craftsmanship was almost non existent and design input was minimal at best. Islander's at least thought about the south aspect and wind direction in their dwellings but, for some reason, even these essentials are uncommon considerations on the mainland, and seemingly remain so!
The truly sad thing is Ireland's continued addiction to, and myopia about, appalling 'house must face the road' strip development, the ghastly bungalow and hacienda house 'architecture', and still commonly without any realistic or life enhancing consideration of aspect or planting.
On top of that, our plebeian dominated 'government', and despite, apparently, a housing crisis, global warming and the need to import fuel, seems quite determined to maintain this pathetic quality of housing. It imposes ridiculously costly and myopic regulations on construction. It even imposes swingeing taxation on basic materials and insulation despite these being produced here by companies heavily subsidised with taxpayers money.
Until this country matures to elect an honest government, and also it is legislated that planning 'authorities' be staffed with meritoriously selected and aesthetically sensitive people instead of rule focused gob-shite bureaucrats, poor old Ireland will remain architecturally embarrassed.

I agree! I would much rather live in a property like this than some of the ' houses ' that are going up today! X

@@cajsheen2594 And there's some pretty hideous houses going up all over rural Ireland.

      @@sixmagpies OMG ! What a rant !
No skill in building a cobb house, thatching a roof or building a dry stone wall? These people built their own houses. I'd like to see you do that.
In fact, most traditional houses are built in a hollow or in the shelter of a hill, and near a well or a spring. Not facing the road as you say. The road came about as a way to get to the house.
      Such whinging and snobbery !

And I thought restoring our 120 year old house was a job! You put an amazing amount of labor into this project, that takes grit and determination. Looks like great success to me. Some say they dislike the modern feel to the cottage, but when it was newly made in the 1830's, I am sure the plaster was smooth and white, just as you have made it.

Ignore the haters Sergiy, both you and your family have done a fantastic job here. The cottage looks amazing and it's nothing short of a miracle how you've brought this 200 year old dwelling back to life. Hats off to you sir! People probably don't realise that you are both an amateur builder and videographer, so criticism totally unwarranted. I am truly in awe at how much time, research and effort must have gone into this project.

we have to use the stove occasionally during irish winter (+5-10C), otherwise its only +16C thanks to UFH. 2 foot mud wall will retain and slowly release the heat for 24 hours.

Very nice joinery and lots of make it up as you go along It is never easy joining old to new When I rebuilt my 145 year old house, I left the level and square in the tool box It was all making it match the old, little of which was plumb or square I just made it pleasing to the eye Now it is a nice livable home, perhaps not museum piece, but a homey place to live, like yours

tom jackson ,, too right! I live in a 100 year old home in Arizona, there’s not a plumb, square or level wall or floor in it. I learned to accept it and just laugh and do the best that I could with the old girl. Her foundation is strong and the wood as hard as oak. She’ll be around longer than I will!

Great renovation. I love these cottages and to me they are part our history. Anybody who undertakes to preserve these in any way should be applauded. Sadly too many of these lie abandoned or in ruins all over the west of Ireland. Thanks for showing some of the techniques used as they might offer guidance and inspiration to others wishing to do the same. I really like what you have done and thank you for uploading the video and wish you many years of enjoyment in your home.

I love the fact they did a lot of it old style ways, mud bricks, literally. And with the more modern things. they would have done it in their day had it been available, so no can complain that they brought back to life something that was once an ancestor’s home, it’s great to see the descendants reclaim what would have been a loving family home. I’m sure their ancestors are looking down very please they have not been forgotten. ❤️💓💞💚💗💙💕💛💝🧱💟💘🎁💖🧡💜❣️🤎🤍✝️

Brings back memories good and bad of restoring my old farm house of similar construction here in Cork some 20years ago. I left my out - buildings traditional though with galvanized steel roofing as they are used for animals etc but preferred the old style slate tiles for the roof of the house. I couldn't live through it all again. Love what you have done!.

Fantastic job. Been there myself. Know the blood, sweat and tears (literally) that went into it. So worth it. I know the feel of that place when you open the door. That's what the nay sayers don't get, not that you have got many negative comments anyway. But having done this myself l know that you have maintained the spirit of the place and that is so so worth it. Good luck for the future, you deserve it!

myself of Irish Heritage, my family came from Fermanah an County Cork.... Much of Ireland was caught up in Serfdom, farmers had to give up much of what they could get from trade, to the Lords.... Mne came to St. James, New Brunswick, bought property once owned by Bennidict
Arnold, had a tavern and a bowling ally, before moving to Boston... My Nana was born in Boston, her mother owned a rowhouse on Pearl Street, just down from the Bunker Hill Monument. Nana's mother took in laundry.......

Thank you for not utterly destroying another traditional home in Ireland. Irish attitudes to architectural preservation are appalling, so it’s nice to see someone who made the effort to hold onto as much as possible. My mother’s village has been absolutely decimated by the modernist trend, completely wrecking the feel of the place in just 20 years. Then you’ve got what what my arsehole of an uncle did to “the old house” when our family lived for nearly a century- waited until my grandparents died then gutted the place and turned it from a beautiful thatched roof home (easily over 200 years old) into another soulless bloody holiday home “with all mod cons”. It’s heartbreaking. Even the locals were appalled by it. Had it been in Britain he would’ve been sued by the local council and forced to return it to its former state. But not in Ireland- where a brown envelope with some cash will shut up the local councillors. So again, thank you.
