The weather here has been very good so far, with occasional quick shower every now and then. Rain days usually start to pickup mid September into October, so your travels mid August should be fine. Yes, if you look at the weather report it more likely have rain showers daily, but not really case. The rain often is shifting from one side of Phuket to another, so far just short quick rain. August is pretty good should be mild with occasional rain, bigger rain usually comes mid September into October.
Prefer a more chilled environment, like Kata or Karon, couldn't be bothered with getting harassed to go into every shop/restaurants etc, I know they have to make a living😢.
Myself also, Patong is a very vibrant & popular place, but alot of fun to explore and see. Yes, Kata and Karon are much more mellow. One of my favorite areas in Phuket is Mai Khao Beach very very mellow up there. I have been up there a number of times you will have Kilometers of Beach with no one around.
