  • Eco Complete Planted Substrate SETUP. When setting up this aquarium Substrate you do not want to rinse it and that is the directions from the manufacture. There’s a lot of questions regarding how to setup Eco Complete and that’s why I did this video. This substrate is a planted Tank Substrate but it doesn’t contain nutrients for the plants it grows it.

I was thinking about trying this in a new tank so it was helpful to see it being setup.

I do have to say I’m completely in your side about being hesitant about additives.

I use eco complete. I rinse the first half and leave the second one as is. Never had issues. I add roots tabs and easy green from aquarium coop

The material is technically basalt scoria whose fragments are rounded in a river or shoreline…and almost completely un-screened. It comes with so much silt sized material that can be resuspended whenever the substrate is disturbed. Smart to fill slow, because a quick fill will put all the silt fraction onto the surface. The CEC would come almost entirely from the smaller grain sizes, which you want to keep as deep in the substrate as possible.

Just bought some jungle val from someone who’s growing it in just 1 in or less of eco complete, growing on fish waste only , no fertilizers added or water charges.

You just used a piece of driftwood from outside ?? Because pet store selling them $35 not really trying to spend that much on driftwood wood do you think Home Depot is a better option ?? I’m in New York City

I will not use this alone, only mixed with sand because it is a pain to plant into.

This is old but I definitely experienced this just a few days ago staring a new 9 gallon nano tank. Not only does it hold onto cuttings poorly to keep them from floating away, but if those cuttings have roots, the pressure you need to shove them in would surely damage the delicate roots coming out, meaning you'd have to dig a little hole and fill it in after. Definitely going with a sand cap next time.
Edit: this is a great product, but capping with something more fine would make planting MUCH easier. Just add an inch or so and then about 2 inches of sand, stick your stem plants about an inch into the sand and they will be much easier to plant and find the nutrients on their own.

Can you put a sand covering over the top of the eco complete? Thats what im wanting to do but i have no idea. If not may just go the soil and sand route. Never done live plants but ive been really itching to try them out. Always looked awesome to me.

so my question is .. did you just leave the aquarium as is and allow the chlorine to dissipate through oxygen exchange at the surface or did you use a chem (over heard you say you were going to leave it for a couple days before the video ended)... --- i would have used like seachem prime to get rid of the chlorine right away??
because if you didn't use a chlorine remover such as PRIME you basically killed all the
"good bacteria" in the 'mystery water' in the Eco - complete substrate anyways.. deeming it just gravel , no ?
therefore its not really a good review lol not trying to be a dick . just my opinion !

But thats my point then how can you call it an eco complete review, when your not using it how its intended to work?
In my opinion its great stuff I've used it in my tanks, and it works fantastic!
